Great stuff. I haven’t bought a comic in a long time, probably 2 years. Getting the itch to jump back in. Are keys and 1st appearance still going for crazy prices or has the market cooled?

Most are through the roof! Venom 1st is having a hefty upswing.

Personally, I think today's high prices are temporary and primarily a function of two factors.  One is the comic movie craze.  However, I think that is much more benign than the main factor which is that stocks and real estate have been pushed to way overvalued levels (largely driven by central bank shenanigans and huge increases in government deficits).  The massive amount of paper wealth that has built up has led to all sorts of assets becoming inflated including sports cards, vintage autos, comic books, art, etc.  I haven't sat down and actually done the math but my guess is that you could probably buy every single CGC book for well below 1% of Apple stock's value.  And 1% of Apple is virtually nothing on just Apple's value, let alone the entire stock market capitalization.

In times like this, I would probably focus on hard to find books that aren't that expensive (even if they did go up in value a lot).  Mainly because they are hard to find.  I would not buy Hulk 181 or AF15 at these lofty levels.  Personally, I'm extremely confident that the next 5-10 years will manifest in a significant asset deflation scenario at some point.  I think it could get really ugly and comic books will be the last thing people will care to buy with their limited amount of funds.

There is a precedent to this. What happened to overall valuations of comic books in late 2008 early 2009 when the stock market & economy was on life support? ASM books of all ages for example were flying high at the time. They have come down since are now experiencing a bit of another upswing. Maybe the 2008 high was due to the movie? Don't know.

But there is already a precedent as I stated.

Tell me about it. I discovered this thread after I purchased my small fireproof safe. I believe however that there should be no issue if the humidity is monitored regularly and controlled by a dehumidifier. I suspect that the damage in this horror-story was caused by another factor, as stated in the first thread "The apparent corrosive appearance of the staples suffered on some of my CGC books may just have been typical advanced rust decay -- or even possibly an additional unknown reaction to the air-freshener I also had within my safe but did not consider to be relevant at the time."

This is my simple set-up: I use a pretty small safe, that holds however at least 30 slabs, along with a digital hygrometer, that registers also min and max values of humidity (and temperature) and I keep inside an Eva-Dry dehumidifier that I check a couple of times a week. I may actually add another one, even if the humidity is pretty good with this one (usually at around 37-38, but I have a max value at around 45).

Anyway, this works probably better than a CGC box. And definitely much better than a safe deposit box in the bank for me, since I really enjoy having my books around :-)

Just curious how often do you have to plug in your dehumidifier to dry it out? I only used mine (Eva dry-333) around 11 days before beads turned green & I had to plug them in.

i ended up ordering a bunch of stuff from Eva-dry , including Color changing silica gel packs for my deposit boxes https://www.eva-dry.com/dehumidifiers/e-150-moisture-eliminator-pouches better safe than sorry , and I figure it’s a good habit to get into .

As far as the safes vs deposit boxes goes, I’m opposed to keeping the higher end ones at home mainly for security reasons. I agree that the safe itself paints an immediate bullseye on itself in the event of a burglary.

Of course there's always the possibility placing the safe in a closet & building a casing around it with a locked door built in the casing. Painting it black. It wouldn't be spotted right away + has another lock on it. Hooray for the handyman!

For starters...all the books in my signature.  Except for 1, I was able to get them all below the 1 year selling average (from Ebay and this forum).

Then your point is moot.  We're talking about thousand(s) dollar transactions and you're not willing to put in an effort to negotiate or find better pricing?

I've negotiated plenty of books on eBay to market range. It's not easy & majority of time reasonable offers are declined due to sellers fee & PayPal fees. Same with other sites though less so since their inventory are typically less.

How do I know whom I'm dealing with on this site? It could be anyone blowing smoke up my a#s. Yes PayPal has buyer protections but I'd rather avoid the hassle.

Have you thought about making a WTB post? If you're willing to offer FMV according to GPA, or even a little bit over like your post suggest, I would think you should have some people contact you.

You also could go the route of looking at current, and upcoming auctions that aren't just on ebay,

Yes I've thought about that but am not too thrilled about doing business through a message board. Even if it's on PayPal. The non eBays have buyer's fees or are just as ridiculously priced, lousy customer service and almost never have what I'm looking for. Limited payment methods. And they take a month to ship your book

If it's in 9.8 that your shooting for, I'd personally go for the safest option of blue label. I don't know what sigs your considering having on it though. If Stan that might not be an option for long, but it might not sky rocket either so who knows.... ?

but that's the point, if there are too many variables, your bound to be disappointed in "some aspect", so do you play it safe or not? really comes down to personal choice, which is stressful lol

Yes, it's a cgc graded 9.8 white newsstand. GPA should break down the sales data to show these differences!

No reserve, let it ride.  The problem with double covers (in general) is that whenever they pop up for sale they are ridiculously priced.

    ***Nice book

What books on eBay/most other sites that are the least bit worthwhile are not absurdly priced?

There is no telling how "rare", just have to watch sales manually, and I haven't been watching that close :( or at least not in that grade; as for signed or not that is another personal choice. If your willing to spend the money, it really matters what your gut says or what will make you happy in the end!

It's particularly hard not to factor in resell value in with a high $$ purchase, so I feel your pain!

I'm trying to decide on an unsigned newsstand edition. Trying to gauge how rare they are in that high of a grade. A signed one would be way above my range right now

    This page alone

    maybe 1 per month....

    but not a lot lol

I would assume it's found its way into most collections as a keeper, I wonder who is paying these prices now? I get buying a 9.8, but I guess I'm towards the minority that can be satisfied with lower grades. Lowest I'd go on this book is my lowly 8.0, but still want to upgrade, I can hope :wishluck:that prices come down a bit :)

Im also in the market for ASM 300. How rare would a 9.8 white newsstand edition be? Trying to decide if it's worth going well above market range for one? Going back & fourth on going for an unsigned version. I wish there was a way to track sales of graded newsstand issues.

  11. Hey everyone my name is Martin & I live in a Miami suburb called Kendall.

Obviously I've been posting here for awhile before introducing myself. Apologies for not finding this thread before now.

I started getting into comics in 1990 when I was really young. It continued for several years till high school came along. After a looooong layoff I am back now with an insatiable vengeance wanting to make up for lost time!!! I don't do it to profit or financial gain. Primarily I just love the books, characters & stories!

I'm new to the comic grading world but familiarizing myself everyday. My primary interest are silver/bronze age ASM, Hulk, X-Men, Wolverine & obviously the V-man (looking forward to the movie next year). Comic related souvenirs/wall decor etc. I'm a sucker for anything related to spideys black costume!

Only book I ever sold was a good condition Iron man #5 in 2000 & regret it everyday since! Infact the first thing I looked for & bought when getting back in was that exact book in 9.0 CGC white pages.

Well there's my introduction. Hope to continue interactions with fellow comic lovers here!

congrats!!  whats the story behind it?  Or did you buy it graded?

Thanks. I bought it already graded. I wish I had more information on the date stamp! The stamp ink still appears fresh. It was quite a selling point, at least for me.
