Question about The Punisher's logo change...why?
shadroch replied to troydivision1's topic in Comics General
I gave it a few episodes, hoping the real Bobba would show up but I'm guessing he didn't. What a waste of my time watching that . -
Question about The Punisher's logo change...why?
shadroch replied to troydivision1's topic in Comics General
I don't read the Punisher and havn't since The War Journal days. I liked the original character even if it was a blatant Mack Bolan rip-off. I will say I was surprised Disney allowed so many groups to infringe upon such a well known logo, to the point where they switched it rather than protect the copyright /trademark whatever. Living in NY, I was surprised to see the NYPD ESU using a variant of it, and several right wing extremist groups in Arizona blatantly sell knock offs of it. I liked the old logo and appropriated it for my clubs softball team one year, but when we tried to use it again the next year, the league said it was not allowed. It's strange that Disney will stop a bunch of middle aged guys from wearing it for softball but not defend it against other uses. -
Go for it.

In the early/mid 90s, I disassembled a few books and used a comic bag and board as a cheap frame. I'd sell the pinups/posters/ mutilated pages for a buck each and sales were very hit and miss. I found if I was at an outdoor venue and had room to spread them out they did okay but if they were in a comic boxc they were almost ignored. There was one book that featured Superman pinups from the ages that I could sell six or seven pages from better than I could sell the comic itself. It wasn't much of a money maker but it moved some inventory. Just be prepared because there is always a richard who will talk bad because you desecrated a sacred text.

How to Bag Larger Format Books?
shadroch replied to Sid Jagger's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
What I can't fit in normal or Golden Age comic bags will usually fit in a magazine bag. There are a few books, like Warrior Magazine that don't fit the regular magazine bags. For those I use treasury bags. -

Why not have MCS submit them for you? Ship them to MCS. -

I don't think that is the case. Two weeks might be for raw books . -

I sent a box of twenty CGC books from Arizona to MCS in early March. They recieved it on March 9th and all 20 books are now listed for sale. Just to give an idea of the time it tales from when they recieve the books. Raw books will obviously take longer. -

I know you can send books to MCS who will then send them to CGC for you. I don't know about CGC shipping other peoples books there. -
Set of 1958 baseball cards
shadroch replied to Scott Conant's topic in CGC Trading Cards General Discussion
I wouldn't grade them. Sell them to a dealer and let him figure out which,if any, of them are worth grading. The common cards won't return the cost of grading. The cards are 63 years old. Those holders are much newer so the cards spent most of their life not in them, which is why the condition is bad. Low grade commons from 1958 might get you a buck or two for most of them. -
Advice Needed- Friend acquired huge collection
shadroch replied to ChrisInBaltimore's topic in Comics General
I'd do it for books, but get an agreement hammered out now, in writing. -
Charging me now for a service I won't get for nine months seems unethical, at best.

If you lower your expectations enough, eventually CGC will satisfy you.

How do variant covers make their way?
shadroch replied to Shazbot's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
You can pay to make your own variant in many cases. -
The story of a promise made during the Korean War

Maybe we'll learn more when the 40,000 missing emails surface. -
Just a reminder that Mile High Chuck for years said that whatever books were left from the MH2 collection had long been mixed into his regulat inventory and was now indistinguishable from it. In other words- he had no MH2 books to sell. Then CGC came along and a pallet or two of these books were " discovered" just in time to be slabbed.

1) I never said they will sell instantly but they were two slabbed books that sold poorly at the auction. I'm confident they will sell at the price I will set. You are correct that identifying these opportunities is a key ability . I won't give you the two books from this auction but I'll give you a few from past auctions. In a December auction ,I bought a Moon Knight 29 for $160. Sold it in Feb for $219. A $38 profit for two months. Won a Marvel Tales 1 for $185, sold it in three weeks for $240. In the last few months, I've flipped about thirty books I bought and then consigned back. It wasn't just auction wins ,either. In one case I saw a popular book that had two copies at what I thought were low prices. I sent them both best offers of $160. One accepted, the other countered at $169. I bought that as well, and repriced both books at $250. I got an almost instant offer of $225 for one of them and sold the other in two weeks for $217. Some might think it is a lot of work to make $70 but I consider it FUN.. -
Why do you want them slabbed? Is it to sell them? Chances are you won't get your costs backs if you sell so it is not worth it. Is it because they hold some deep sentimental value to you? If that is the case, why entomb them in plastic where you'll never read, or smell them again. Is it because you have too much money and just have to throw some of it away? If you want something nice to display them in, a mylar is under $2 and it doesn't take 272 business days to get one.

Why not price them as you wanted, and see if they sell. What is the rush to get your books back? -

One thing I have not seen in any of these last few posts was the prices realized. The posters had a price in mind when they submitted. If they thought a book was a VF and would garner $60, does it matter if they call it a Poor as long as it gets you the $60. I'm not hearing any stories of books bringing in a fraction of what the consigner wanted, just poor grades. Are you happy with the money you got for the books, regardless of the grades? I'd guess my happiness ratio is 95% per book. -

I finally sold a few lots of books in yesterdays auction and while the results were mixed, overall I'm happy. Three of the lots sold for less than $48 so the minimum $12 fee applied, and the fourth sold for $63 so a $15 commision. Total sales were $163 so minus the $51 in fees, I recieved $112 , and it cost about $10 to ship the 34 books so I made just over $100. I sent them ten lots total but split them up so they wouldn't all be in the same auction. Lot 1 was a group of ten low grade Adventures featuring the Legion, most were Fair to Good and one was missing a centerfold Lot 2 was Batman The Cult 1-4 in Fine. (These were bagged up unread and I thought were harshly graded) Lot 3 was a BA Conan run of ten in Fine Lot 4 was a Superboy run in the early 200s and was the surprise star of the auction, finishing up over $60. These are all fairly slow selling books and if I had them in a $3 box at a show, I doubt I'd have sold thirty of them. In the end, I moved thirty four slow selling books, got over $3 each for them and did it with minimal effort. I have a few more lots up in the next couple of weeks and just sent about ten more lots for the future. As an aside, I'm directing these funds to pay for two books I won at the same auction and which I'll re-consign and sell for a thirty percent profit, then rinse and repeat.
