it was composed digitally and then inked, by the artist, over his printout.

If this was the final inked version for publication, I'd be OK with it. But if he re-inked after publication as a recreation, I'd pass as I don't collect commissions for the most part. Some collectors do and that's completely OK, but valuation needs to be adjusted accordingly.

Just again I wanted to say thanks for the advice. I am not afraid to say that I am a bit apprehensive about buying my first 'expensive' piece of art as I pull books together for trade. I am going to be looking for an Adam Highes, Frank Cho or Giordano piece. I realize it may be a long shot but I figure the WWBN 32 CGC 9.6 (unpressed) is a decent starting point.

    Again thanks all 👍

I'm going to echo grapeape. Selling for cash is going to give you much more flexibility. And as PhilipB mentioned, you might have to sit on that cash before you can locate a piece you really like.

Set a high price in the Comics Selling subforum and take offers. You can probably get a price you are comfortable with. Just don't sell to the first lowballs that come in.

All that aside, "sell the bottom to buy the top". Meaning, don't sell your WWBN. Sell all your drek and lower end stuff first. Unless the WWBN is the only thing that's going to move the needle enough to get you where you need to be.

After all... you're going to eventually sell ALL your comics to buy OA! lol

    Duran Duran fan

Rio was the first CD/album I ever bought. (I started with CDs and had one of the first portable players.)

And Ordinary World was my first live concert.

Btw, you gotta get one of these-

    https://www.rootsvinylguide.com/ebay_items/duran-duran-cd-singles-box-sets-81-85-13-disc-collection

It's all of the singles in CD form with all of the art shrunk down. B-sides galore. Very fun. I think there is an 86-up box too.

He's not, that's why we have the phrase Black Hole Collectors.

Technically, Black Hole Collectors = Unlimited Budget. You don't care if your heirs get the value back out, it's all just "decoration art" money, etc. That's a fine way to collect. I just can't swing it, personally.

And if you'll forgive me for going full grimdark, we are all sellers at some point. Just a matter of time. Unless your heirs take on the collection and keep it going. (Ruh roh, new thread time! Maybe good for Comics General. Hmmm... You guys might have to venture over there.)

I received a page in the mail that has a large crease through it (post office's fault), I was wondering if anybody has any advice for flattening it? Everything I can find on google seems to recommend ironing it, which makes me a little nervous.

There are probably some Youtube vids out there about how to steam it before putting it under pressure. These come in handy! --

Another Itoya collection: I tried putting Bristol pages in both sides of each sleeve, but that tended to make the covers bulge outward, and I don't want to bend the individual pages through long storage like that.  Should I:

    A) Not worry; that doesn't happen.

    B) Put only one page in each sleeve, and that should do it.

    C) Put pages in both sides of every other sleeve, and then cut out the unused sleeves if I don't want all those blank pages

    D) Other

    A. Or B if you're feeling a Spider-tingle about A.

  7. My hope is that new collectors will enter the hobby and not think of it as a mindfield. So I just want to offer again to any new people in the hobby... feel free to PM me if you have questions on something you are considering buying. If it is something I or my wife are interested in, I will let you know up front that it's a conflict of interest. My wife and I have been lucky to have met folks here and at cons to bounce potential purchases off of occasionally. I'd like to pay it forward.

And I'm sure there are other boardies here who are retired or semi-retired from buying who would be happy to comment via PM on your purchases too.

At the time, I emailed HA and requested they publicly post ALL of the lots you consigned with them. No reply. That would be the only way I think you could really put this to rest.

Finally, back to your own words and action as written four years ago:

Thanks for re-posting that. I know many of the long-term boardies here hate to re-hash such bad memories. It's not why we come here to commune about our hobby as an "escape" from work, stress, etc., BUT I was astonished to find the original thread zapped. Not cool mods. I know comics have dealt with this behaviour in the past and to a much greater extent, but this was a big eye-opener for the OA corner. So it is important that those coming in know what's transpired in case it happens again -- And not just from Mike Burkey, but to get an overall sense of how the art market can go awry.

Now, that being said, as much as I dislike this "flipping" thread -- and I've said earlier in it that I think it promotes a guilt-before-innocence mentality -- I have taken @Lee B.'s point (and others) that it does serve an information purpose to the otherwise uninformed. (I just operate on the baseline that you have to do due diligence on your own buys, but OK... we'll crowdsource it.)

*And on a deeper point, I agree with @AnkurJ that I dislike that dealers get a flipping pass while collectors who might resell get dinged. People, this is the flat-world internet age. The reality is that you are all dealers now because you have direct access to your buyers in a way you never had before. Hence, dealers are no longer necessary gatekeepers. And flipping is just a matter of a time line. I wish I could keep it all, but anyone trying to actively build their collection toward certain goals on a limited budget is going to have to sell/trade. But carry on with my least favorite thread.

    cosplay

There was a group that showed up in costume at the first one, probably thinking it was a Big Apple show. All the art collectors were looking at them like they were nuts. And then they started walking the room looking at prices... and thinking we were all nuts!

Great thread! Oddly, a DPS is not something I ever look for, but it turns out I've ended up with a few. All on the modern side. I've also included 2 wraparound covers.

Two from the Adam Hughes story in FF 650 - both are loads of fun to look at and rendered as only AH! can. 2 boards each.

Three from Silver Surfer Black #3, single boards. Tradd the Madman Moore

Absolute Carnage / Immortal Hulk on 2 boards by Filipe Andrade

Shazam! #9 on 2 boards by Marco Santucci - Shazam facing down Black Adam and the 7 Sins

The wraparound covers are coincidentally both by Hitch, one is recreation/modification of The Authority #1 cover (with Neary), and one is an unused JLA cover.

    ^^

Ideally I’d love to be able to make custom sleeves out of 4 mm Mylar, but haven’t figured out how yet

They make it in every conceivable size in both pockets and L-enclosures. Check my links above or bagsunlimited. I bet you could even call them for a sample or mix and match.

    a commission request

I'd have thought you were completely off of commissions by this point. :baiting:  Published pages might be more expensive in some cases, but they are a LOT less stress. :foryou:

I just don't want to see any new-ish enthusiastic collectors get frustrated with the hobby or leave because of the typically high-risk commission experience. That's a tough road even for the more experienced collectors.

I'm having trouble finding the right size media storage for pages. I got an 11x17 Itoya portfolio, and another one that was 13x19, and thought I'd be good. But then I just got three Swamp thing pages that are 13x19.625, and I can't find a portfolio that makes sense for those.

TL:dr is you can either get a gallery box or one of the 18x24 Itoyas. Good luck!

  15. Hey everyone, the wife and I have a few things in CLINK tonight. There are some crazy bargains in here. Prices are probably at about 1/3 of FMV. :whatthe:

These are choice pieces we had cherry-picked for our collection. So benefit from our amazing taste and bid with total abandon! :martini:

João Silveira watercolor and ink Silveira Swamp Thing pinup 2017

    https://www.comiclink.com/Auctions/item.asp?id=1371348

This piece speaks for itself. In person, it is just... jewel-like. The detail, the color, the pathos. Unreal. Kind of can't believe we are selling this.

Adam Hughes pencils, John Nyberg inks, Nexus 57 page 12, large art 19.5x14

    https://www.comiclink.com/Auctions/item.asp?id=1371358

This is an oversized piece. Early, early Hughes art on Nexus. This is the best page from the issue with a great hero shot of the new Nexus meeting Horatio.

Renato Guedes pencils, Jose Wilson Magalhães inks, Action Comics 850 page 21

    https://www.comiclink.com/Auctions/item.asp?id=1371351

A splashy page featuring the whole JLA from the anniversary issue. Guedes art was just perfect for Big Blue.

Mike Grell pencils on vellum, Jon Sable Freelance 22 page 13, 22 page 16, 23 page 9

Three early Sable pages on vellum. We picked these out because they showed three aspects to Sable's life- his writing career, his relationship with Myke, and of course his night job.

I would mildly suggest that they have very good reason based on information we are not privvy to. My guess - they see just how much volume is already in the hopper or likely to soon be under contract for the remainder of the year and had a small come to Jesus moment ;)

Oh, I don't doubt they are drowning in volume with everyone cashing out of comics left and right (due to demographics and Death of Print.) I'm just questioning the choice of Monday night.

  17. I don't know why HA is trying to reinvent the wheel here. There is so much data that ebay auctions do best on Sunday night at 7pm PST/10pm EST or secondarily the same time Tuesday-Thursday. They should look at comics vs OA, see which one brings in more money, and leave that on Sunday. Move the other to Wed night... might be a little buzz in the air after everyone gets their weekly comics.
