Yeah, I think a lot of the big vendors weren't willing to risk the show getting canceled at the last minute.
I think the reduced capacity should absolutely be a thing going forward. When I think about 2019 and how a trip to the bathroom would eat up 45 minutes... just ridiculous that we would all put up with that crowding.

Did Thanos snap our other NYCC thread out of existence?
The missus and I saw most of the show in one day. The good reason was that the aisles were so roomy that you could actually walk from point A to point B for once. The bad reason was the guest list was a bit light.
There was only one point where I felt uncomfortable and that was during the line to get in before opening. We just backed out of that and went in after everyone else.

For some reason, my phone ate my pics of Mark-Wayne Harris's stuff - all digital and I can't find much of his art online, but go find him at the show. Great work.
And go commission Creees immediately. I've always loved his work, but he's really killing it lately.
Oh, and do not bid on the Frankenstein plate at Heritage. It's just a terrible, terrible piece of art. You really shouldn't spend the money. Go do that renovation for the yacht that you've been thinking about instead. ("Hon, I am not sure this power of suggestion thing is going to work on them. It's a Wrightson.")
The real treat was seeing so many friendly faces and catching up again after the last two years. Great to see you all!

Great show opening tonight! Big thanks to Micah and Vincent for putting this together. Tremendous artwork on display from both of the headliner artists as well as from the Metropolis collection.

Wow! What a surreal messed up day this show was...
My buddy Hoss and I had to brave Port Authority at the crack of dawn. At least Dunkin was open.
Once out in Jersey, we missed our stop. On the walk over, I fell, sprained my ankle, and tore up my hand. And we had to sprint across a highway and hop the median! It was either that or get Lyme's disease from the tick-ridden field of head-high grass the GPS said to walk through.
So, Comic Art Con organizers... PLEASE switch to a different venue that's easier to get to from Manhattan. LOL
We drag ourselves up to the dealers' room. Whaddaya mean cash only?! Sigh...

Great seeing some familiar faces. I wish I could have chatted with more folks, but we had to RUN for the bus! On my bad ankle! The bus was then involved in an accident. And we were moments from being attacked by a meth head who thought I stole the $40 he lost. Hoss then made the adult decision for us to call a Lyft... and take it all the way back to the city.
Btw, the only thing to eat in walking distance of the show was a KFC. Yes, the fast food chain that's so dumbed down, they dropped their real name and settled for three letters. And I'm vegan. Yeah, that was fun. You haven't lived until you've put together a meal of KFC sides.
So let's work on a new venue. I was sorely missing that nice restaurant inside the old location.
But thanks to Albert Moy for bringing this bad boy... Walking out with this made the whole mess worth it:

Is there a dealer list for this yet? I think I might make the trip from the city. The Sunday morning bus from Port Authority is always a delight.

I stand by my comments from 3 years ago... Go sign up for a CAF Premium account!

I'm all about the low-dollar OA, and I understand operating on a budget. (You ARE getting those buys lined up for my Best of 2018 Budget Edition contest, aren't you?) But $75 is what you'd spend to get yourself into a con. And CAF is like an art con that never closes. So yeah, go buy a subscription even if you just have a few pieces posted.
As @robert frey pointed out, if you ever sell just one piece on there, it pays for itself.

Oh, for Media, I just meant the media the art was rendered in -- pastels, oils, pencils, inks, mixed media, etc.
For comic art it could be-

or for a color guide-
Perez <leave blank> Ziuko color dyes
or a blueline copy-

Hey all... We were a little early and they were still getting placards up with pricing. So I didn't see prices on anything. And yeah, some of the pieces are probably from familiar dealers, but there was a LOT I had not see floating around. It was a great curation and a great event to bring people back to the Society.
Drop them a line if you have interest in a particular piece, and I am sure they can get you more info. But for those in the NE, try to stop by in person. It's a great venue.

Yep, welcome to the hobby! Where all of your grails end up in a foreign freeport somewhere never to be seen again by human eyes.
But take heart and listen to @Rick2you2. He's long been an advocate for steering your available funds to new (to you) artists that are more affordable in order to scratch that itch of character or quality.
And for many years, my wife and I took shelter in prints as a way to enjoy artists we couldn't afford. They don't hold their value as well as published originals, but... hot take flying in... they might do so better than some commissions.
As to lotteries and such for commissions... yeah, maybe. Sure. But capitalism will do its thing and that's that.
Keep in mind, most comic artists are doing the freelance shuffle. Even if they have a little bit of profile, they don't have that "tick of the clock" paycheck safety net that even minimum wage workers have. They have to push hard wherever they can, for as long as they can.
In your shoes, I'd say budget for and do time payments against a nice published piece. Flip the -script, as it were.

I just wanted to share a FedEx pro tip that came in handy for the missus lately...
She shipped two pieces via Express recently and selected the option on the label screen to "Hold for Pickup" at a nearby FedEx office location. Then, the recipient goes over there with ID in hand to get it.
This avoids the whole porch pirate stress... Because even if you select and pay for Signature Required lately, none of the drivers are actually getting the signatures. They are just scribbling their own and dumping the package wherever.

You're not wrong -- fewer people, less guests, higher ticket, etc., etc. economics, blah blah.... But 2017-2019 were SO BAD with crowding that something needed to change. They were just packing people in. No way that was safe from a fire marshal pov too. Imagine moving across a crowded club dance floor for 8-10 hours. You would just hit a knot of people in an aisle and not move for 10 minutes. I'm not providing solutions here. That's up to ReedPOP. They are going to make their money. It's not my job to do it for them. (ReedPOP, if you're reading this, I am available for consulting. Let's talk!)
