  1. This year's discussion thread will be moderated by Mogo. He finally decided to socialize a little.

So my main hope this year is for everyone to post this around on Comics General, Signature Series thread, Facebook, Instagram, etc. Looking over last year's entries, as great as they were, it just wasn't representative of the VOLUME of great budget art that sells throughout the year. Can you all help me out by cross-posting BUDGET EDITION around? Anyone know anybody at CBR.com, etc? Let's get some new posters on here.

    Thanks all!

While browsing Heritage for the upcoming January auction, I came across this sneak peak of what's in store in April's Signature auction:

    https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/jack-kirby-joe-kubert-and-others-history-of-the-dc-universe

I'd never seen the O/A for this before and don't think it's on CAF.  The piece is pretty much a who's who of artists who were still alive at the time and includes Jack Kirby, Bob Kane, Joe Kubert, Gil Kane, Jim Steranko, Gene Colan, Michael Kaluta, Jim Starlin, Jim Aparo, Frank Thorne, Bill Sienkiewicz, Howard Chaykin, Dave Gibbons and on and on.

Anyone willing to take a SWAG at what this might go for?  It's such a unique piece without any peers that I can think of that I can't even begin to guess.

The more I look at this one, the more I like it. It's quite something getting all of those names in one spot.

haven't been much of a commission guy, but this year I decided to scratch an itch I had to get some work from artists I love (and whose OA is HARD to get).

One piece I commissioned was this killer Batman & Robin from Lee Bermejo. I asked Lee to put his spin on the classic Carmine Infantino image of the Dynamic Duo on a rooftop, patrolling Gotham.

I think he absolutely nailed it -- especially Robin! Can't wait to get this framed.

"Jealousy is the mind killer. I will let my jealousy pass through me..."

    Love it!

  4. I was just telling another boardie @Koheihow after watching Superman the Movie a bazillion times growing up on VHS that I didn't know there was an actual song of Lois's spoken word testament. And now I can't imagine my life without it! Maureen McGovern is incredible. Co-written by John Williams, no less.

And this one by Tia Carrere rips my heart out every time I hear it... Takes me right back to the tragic ending of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

Batman gets another spot on the list with the sultry dance scene in Batman Returns courtesy of Siouxsie and Danny Elfman...

So many great songs in The Crow... But given O'Barr's love for Joy Division, I'd have to note NIN's cover of Dead Souls. And of course The Cure's Burn-

And yes, it's TV, and no, it wasn't a comic book until the 2000s, but the song is insanely catchy-

So help me out... What am I missing?!!

I think the mid 80's-early mid 90's BWS might be peak BWS. I think Barry's drawing is consistently better than during my personal nostalgic peak of late Conan Red Nails/Song of Red Sonja/Studio stuff. His ink line is also a little more free and energetic during this later period too, which I appreciate.

You know, I think you might be right. But the later stuff might not be getting the same love because the later-Marvel/Valiant era was more sequential than illustrative.

At a certain point, the management of a large collection is better done at the spreadsheet level than the portfolio level. Example: Artwork X is tagged "Portfolio 12, sleeve 15" or (for me lol ) "the tallest stack...somewhere middle third. No reshuffling, cuz no order, means no hassle and also little/no risk of those loose word balloons coming off, etc. This method is approximately how Bob Bretall manages his 115k+ quantity comic book collection and how gajillions of eBay sellers manage the inventory of their home "warehouses".

This is the Mile High Comics / Amazon method too, iirc. You don't care where anything is. You just number all of the portfolios and look up its location. I do the same even for my modest collection. It also has the unintended side-effect of arranging your collection by date acquired.
