  1. I think all three aforementioned Harley covers could command huge prices. There is no way BA12 doesn't sell for more than every other cover discussed in these threads. The president of Warner Brothers should just buy it as a gift for Margot Robbie. :-) The WD 1 cover is tricky because there is as much hate for that show as love outside the comics world. But worry not, AMC will keep making that cash cow for as long as they can. That show will go twenty years. It costs pennies to make and they can rotate the cast and location any time they want. If the show does get past the 10-year mark, owning the starting point for that franchise might attract some serious outside attention. I think Sandman will become more and more a fondly-remembered niche book since it doesn't seem to be adaptable to other media. Its covers should stay steady within the OA collecting community. But McKean has some crossover to the contemporary art market, no? Preacher kind of lives and dies on this next season. The first season felt like a trial run. If they can implement the long-term stories that are in the comics, the show could hang in there. Then, the art could get a bump. But I don't know if the show itself has a lot of crossover potential even if it goes 4-5 seasons. It doesn't have as a clear a concept as WD. That is why it is a quirky summer experiment show. I think when you are buying a historically-important piece, the art quality, artist, etc. is secondary. Are there "better" Adams covers than GL 76? Maybe. But the piece is incredible because it is a hallmark of an entire era. That being said, here is a nice testament to Mike Parobeck's terrific art- http://www.cbr.com/mike-parobeck-revisited/ Who was his rep? Anyone bought or sold a BA cover? Was it from the Parobeck estate? Does Rick Burchett know where BA 12 is?
  2. The last bulk buy I made for a title run was Copper LOSH, but I never got around to reading them. Maybe I will dig them out now and finally give them a read. I've heard good things!
  3. I think it is an interesting case study, for certain. This is a good example of a "cover bump", of course, but also how once a piece attracts a high-level buyer, the curve for that particular artist goes out the window. I did not bid on this cover (although an example is on my list. This just wasn't "the one.") but if I did, the comps all pointed at $2500. So factoring in a Heritage frenzy and BP, that means I, as a mid-level collector, am looking to STRETCH to $3500 -- knowing the whole time I am paying over market, but what the hay, right? But two guys, as you said, can blow away the curve. This happened to me twice on similar-era pieces this week at different venues that I WAS going after. I have sour grapes, I know! But I wonder if there is a more subtle question this raises... Is there a disappearing "middle-class" in art collecting? In other words, once a piece is good enough to attract the eye of a high-end collector, it gets lifted up -- immediately blowing away the artist's curve. And does this inflation for A-level pieces hurt or help the artist's market over time? Further to the point, if all long-term collectors are really dealer-collectors looking for trade bait, then any splash or cover is going to get "lifted up". So nostalgia may not even play as much a factor in these foothills of the steep end of the curve.
  4. I kind of thought it might jump, but not that high. What gets me is the $5k+ for that Jon Sable cover! What is happening?
  5. Hmmm. If they stick to 30 seconds a lot, maybe about 4:45 EST.
  6. Does anyone have a rough idea when the OA lots will start?
  7. I agree. And how does this mentality about the BA 12 cover fare against a theoretical Bruce Timm prelim or first model drawing for the BAS show, if offered for auction?
  8. All that being said, I would rather have a cel from her first episode.
  9. Harley got a movie before Wonder Woman. No coincidence there. She's DC's biggest female property and is coming back for another feature. BA 12's cover, even if you don't find Harley to be that prominent on it, is a very good Batgirl image that plants it firmly in the Batman Animated Series era. So a few more nostalgia points for that. In my mind, first Harley beats first X-23 and probably most other firsts. Harley is a cross-over phenomenon and is still growing. I can see this nudging $200K.
  10. All of you high rollers need to go lick your wounds somewhere else tomorrow. Don't punish us Saturday guys because you got beat up Thursday and Friday.
  11. Speaking of hobbies aging off, what is the demographic on the buyers for this strip art? Raymond and Foster I get, but $6K for Barnaby, etc., etc.?
  12. Is the audio really low or is it just me?
  13. $65K for the Comedian and $20K each for the rest of the Watchmen paintings. I wonder if they were kept together? Fritz may have been the most culturally-important lot this go around. Lucas Museum got The Bible. This would make a nice companion. The thing about bidding in the room or by phone is that people tend to forget the juice.

  15. Jomar Bulda fire relief fundraiser Looks like one of Kirk's artists, Jomar Bulda, lost his home in a fire. There are a few ebay auctions up right now to help out his family. I'm not affiliated, just trying to spread the word... 16. I wonder if anyone in the estate has ever tried to consign to Sotheby's or Christie's American Art auctions? Inclusion in a catalog like that, alongside Rockwell, Wyeth, and Parrish, etc. would seem like the next logical way to cement the Frazetta illustration legacy within the art world. If any fantasy artist could make the leap, it's him. (I would also like to see a Bernie Fuchs, a Bob Peak, or a Drew Struzan make that leap up to the American Art Fine Art level. They may have the public visibility to get up to that level. Somebody at these big auctions houses should be taking the lead to rework this market and the definition of "American Art".)
  17. My Dad brought this Superman Treasury home one day after work for me. But it was a few years later until I wandered into a Walden Books on my own to buy these-
  18. Bird, are you covered through Collectibles Insurance or a similar policy? If so, I would start the ball rolling with a claim through them as well as following up with the shipper and the auction house. If anyone knows the consignor, maybe drop them a note and ask them to pressure the auction house to make good. They might be more responsive to their consignors.
  19. I don't know much about animation, but those cel setups seem very nice.
  20. Very cool! Which ones did you have? http://www.comicbookdb.com/title_covergallery.php?ID=1159
