    Could be....

The size and amount of pieces missing would put this VG range but the stains and "substance" damage knocks it more.

    1.8

If you want the book get what you can and what you're comfortable spending. I have many a mid-or-low grade key I jumped on because it fit my hobby.

Haha, good suggestion!  Yeah, at the price I paid I really can't complain - postage cost more than the book!

Finally found a copy in my price range     Did I overpay?  I think flaws are pretty evident but I'm curious about the brownish marks along the inside cover.  In the photos I thought surely water damage but in person it doesn't look/feel as much like it.  Thanks for your opinions!IMG_20210828_175353.thumb.jpg.dda214b6625eba4f7831fed77bcc07fd.jpgIMG_20210828_175426.thumb.jpg.f267f940cc75abde58f2f6c2595a997b.jpgIMG_20210828_175400.thumb.jpg.a70af7b70346eda6421c1bddc8b8956a.jpgIMG_20210828_175405.thumb.jpg.29e3621be55b8aed2f982e3c200e84c7.jpgIMG_20210828_175418.thumb.jpg.f61d9d76c8787a46771b456f7b532431.jpgIMG_20210828_175447.thumb.jpg.81e8bd8b4434b4a7629aa22a37e9c09b.jpg

I don't see the vertical crease that you mentioned. By your description, it sounds like a subscription crease though. There is a printer's crease on the bottom left of the back cover. That crease would not effect the grade in this instance.

The front cover art of this book is one of the few that makes it really tough to grade from a scan as camouflages wear. Seeing this in person and being able to hold it at different angles to a light source would be very helpful. From what I can gather, it looks to be around a 7.0.

@KingOfRulersIs the printer's crease the veiny one directly above the word AURORA?  I'm interested in understanding better how to positively ID a printer's crease, would you mind sharing some knowledge?  Thanks much!!

  4. That crease is really tough to decipher - I think I see it on the back (about 2 inches from spine?).  Can't make it out on front.  FC looks really nice but for me all the other flaws on the back are what would pull this one down a bit.  Also tough to be sure without additional pics from side, etc.  All those caveats aside it would be a 6.0 for me.

8.5 largely due to the color rub. Spine looks alright but CGC seems to have a newer focus on frayed spines on issues with the heavier cover paper stock. Something to keep in mind.

    Thanks for sharing.

Good to know about the focus on frayed spines for those particular books, thanks @grendelbo !!

  6. Still chuckling at that nametag gif, @grendelbo  , well played!

That water damage on the back looks rough to me so I was thinking 3.5.  Recognizing, though, that the local experts (and @grendelbo aka liver of the chopped variety) put it higher than that I'm curious whether I am over-penalizing for water damage?  The idea of a severely water damaged 5.5 or 6.0 is very foreign to me - can others speak a little on their experience with submitting/getting back water-damaged copies of books?  Would love to learn more about practical examples of how CGC has graded them!

    Thanks!

  7. Very similar to the other Watchmen 1 just posted for me.  FC looks really good - 9.2 maybe even 9.4.  But that back cover has so much going on and I'm not sure what a lot of it is.  Even beyond the blue circles there seem to be creases the length and width of the book?!  Or maybe I'm seeing things.  Anyway overall it looks like an 8.0 to me.  But a cleaning of the back might make a really big difference (if those aren't creases).

  8. I'm not familiar with the "standard" printing/manufacturing error you mentioned on the lower back of the cover so I offer no opinion on how a grader is likely to view it.  I've seen a lot of raw copies of that book (had the fortune to buy and store a handful of them myself when they first came out) and I'd say yours is a great looking copy.  It looks like a 9.6 to me - if the flaws you mentioned are NOT manufacturer error then I could see 9.4 or even (but less likely) 9.2.  If they are BOTH considered manufacturer error, I think 9.8 is at least a possibility.  I know most people around here are reluctant to ever judge something a 9.8 and with good reason but if you're debating grading it I think knowing 9.8 *could* be possible may be helpful.  (Cue others saying all the things I missed and reasons it's NOT a 9.8, which may be totally fair).

Congrats on such a nice copy of such a hot book!

Really tough to tell much with pictures of it in the slab (I know you can't do anything about it, just saying).   A 9.0 wouldn't shock me. How much value would you put on it going from 8.5 to 9.0?  I think that's the real question.  You break the slab, get it C/P and it comes back a 9.0 instead, are you thrilled or just ok?  I would think there's an small chance it gets to a 9.2 or higher but at least a 50% chance it comes back still 8.5.  I'd personally figure out what the $ amount it was worth to me for the 8.5 to 9.0 bump, figure out cost to C/P and resubmit, and then how pissed would I be if it comes back 8.5 again.  And then add to that equation cost of grader notes, I'd personally want that info so I could zero in on those areas to re-look at them AND to make sure it's stuff a C/P might impact.  Make sense?

If you do resubmit PLEASE update, would love to know what happens!
