Man, I can't find a scan of a book I wanted to list. Maybe tomorrow.

    OK, last one for tonight.

Giant-Size X-men #1 CGC 9.6 White pages. Smoking copy. I subbed it expecting a 9.8 (no, I'm not trying to pump the book, it's that nice) and if it doesn't sell, I'll resub it and wait for a Disney mutants movie announcement.

    Asking $25,000 (shipping included)

Surprised this is still here................I would bet it is a 9.8 on a resub.

I think the market on AF15 is just getting warmed up . Low grade completes I think in near future are going to mind blow collectors at where the values go . Many non comic collectors aka card gurus are noticing low number counts for comics and investors are coming in hard . That’s only explanation I have for pages selling for this amount ….

Pretty soon it will be pieces.....right @gadzukes:)

I think a lot of people regret the money they left on the table but don't factor in what they did with that money.

Like, if you spent it on renovating your home, or a new car you enjoy or simply bought other comics, those are all investments that did something for you and brought value into your life.

So, if people actually thought through what they left on the table and then calculated where that money went and what it did, it'd be far more productive than just regretting what they did with the money.

For example, I sold a Hulk #1 9.0 for a record price in 2014 but I don't regret not keeping it. Keeping that book for 7 years would have actually cost me money, because I wouldn't have the cash to multiply it into where I am today, which is much further ahead than the profit I would have made if I'd just sat on it.

Even though I'm a full time dealer now, I think most collectors are the same way.

They may have sold a big key in 2010 or 2015 or even 2019 before the recent rise, but if you bought tons of other comics with that money then your ROI is probably pretty good no matter what you own since almost ALL comics have been rising steadily for 80 years and you're not as poorly off as you thought you were.

And if you DIDN'T sell the big key and sat on it, would you be in a better or worse place financially today?

That's the proper way to look at it IMO.

    +1

Although passing on the diamond run AF15 a couple of decades earlier is one that I wish I could get back, not sure I would have had the fortitude to press it into a 9.6 like Brulato did .......

That's where i thought the book should have gone a long time ago. It's by far the toughest of the big keys in grade.

I tried to broker a deal on the lone Hulk #1 9.4 about 5 or 6 years ago and even then it was thought to be a $1MIL book.

The only reason this book didn't pop sooner is because the movie spec guys didn't have a Hulk series to latch onto, but it's a killer book.

I sold a 9.0 about 7 years ago for a fraction of this new result.

    Well said!

I chased a 9.2 for quite some time and one of the biggest regrets is not pulling the trigger on it a few years ago.

It is a very tough book in grade and unfortunately it appears that is becoming more and more apparent.

To this date it is still the only Marvel key that has eluded me in high grade and if trends keep pushing the envelope it will continue that way.

Did you also try to broker a 9.2 a little while back?

Clink should not be advertising this book like they did.  They should reach out to the consignor and CGC should regrade it.  The fact that it's being pushed as a 9.8 is disgusting it is clearly no longer a 9.8.

This is a true statement, however does it just end with sun fade? I know of quite a few books with SCS, pudding, and encapsulation defects that are no longer the same book submitted.

Perhaps CVA should branch out into a  CYA label.........

And that is why I haven't submitted anything for the last 3 years, QC is a joke and the label chasers are endless.

CGC contacted me to ask me about the book since I submitted that book and got the 9.8 on it.

The book did NOT look like that when I subbed it. The book is obviously faded.

This is an image of the book shortly after it was encapsulated. It's a dead 9.8.

I remember this book, thank you for the insight!!

  7. If you were a condition collector in the 90's , and borderline hoarder I think you are doing okay for return on investment.

i won't disclose how many of these I had or currently have but so far all 9.8's to 9.9's

    ASM 300 (9.8's, and 1 9.9)

    ASM 361 (9.8's)

    NM , 87,98 (9.8's)

    Wolverine Mini 1-4 (9.9's)

    Dark Knight (9.8's)

    Batman Adv 12(9.8's)

And there are a lot more examples of a pretty significant return for investment , silly really.

I do wish I would have picked up an Action 1 a decade earlier in place of stockpiling .

No one has even touched upon the most incredible part of this thread...

"It is my friend’s book, who recently upgraded to a 9.4"

    A 9.4....WOW!!!!!!!!!

    Perhaps a SS ?

GLWTS , 4 is always a tough one in high grade

If I understand you correctly, I don't agree. Selling to a dealer will get you pennies on the dollar. Buying from a dealer will prob get you overpaying.

I've done a lot of business with HA over the last year and found them to be fair and professional. I heard they even had a chance to outright buy the Promise Collection form the family for under $1,000,000 and felt it wasn't the right thing to do. I respect that.

Tho I can't guarantee theres no shill bidding - I assume there is - I've found that plenty of high grade books fly under the radar there. If its not a 9.8, or a key, theres a pretty good chance you'll get a good deal in their Sun/Mon auctions. Just keep your eyes open and you'll find them.

I am suggesting consigning with a reputable dealer. I have yet to find a good deal on HA at least for the books I am looking for, but YMMV.

If all this where true they would be out of business shut down end of story.

All seems fair with Comics and Greed with some of these guys.

Personally I would never consign anything to HA, far too shady in my opinion and lots of collectors get blinded by all the $$$(hyperbolic data points) and sparkling Pedigrees, Ala Promise Collection (Big Money gets your BIG grades, regardless of condition)

I think sticking with the dealers that have given the hobby their blood ,sweat and tears will get you better mileage.....YMMV

I remember when they would tell you what each of the three graders gave the book... for example, you could have an 8.5 that actually received two 8.5's and one 9.0 .... those were usually nice books. They had a customer service rep giving the notes over the phone, it had to be a significant expense for CGC. GOD BLESS...

    -jimbo(a friend of jesus)(thumbsu

That was a very weird way to do things, I can recall calling for grading notes on several books and the graders asking me where I got them, etc.....Good to know they were appreciative but still a strange experience back then.

It would be beneficial on some books to know the full scale from all the graders, and your 8.5 example is very suiting , I can't tell you how many VF+'s I have had regraded as 9.2's on straight resubs.
