Agreed.  Signature placement would be critical deal breaker for me, along with the presentation of the signature if I were a collector of such things.  Some sigs look Really nice, while others look like a doctor's signature one gets on an order for a prescription

Not to mention the color touch removal..........

Wow .... ASM 63 in CGC 9.4 just hammered on Clink for over 6K .... not quite as eye opening as the Avengers 48 (CGC 9.8) for north of 26K ... GOD BLESS....

Glad this book is getting some recognition , BUT it is not really that uncommon in high grade in my personal experience, YMMV.  And I am sure as the years have gone one , many copies are in personal collections. (Mine aren't going anywhere ) Just another example of label chasers pushing yet another black cover issue into the stratosphere IMHO.

The Goldin CGC 8.5 white page copy was the one I used to own . Came from the Saginaw collection which was auctioned on ebay by Sparkle City.

Was the bottom edge indented when you owned it or is this new SCS damage?  Or as others have stated could be a reflection from the holder .

There are a couple instances of "possible" damage on high dollar books in this auction ,hopefully that small tear on the back cover of the SC4 was already there, but that is not a reflection

I agree.  What do you think the ASM 1 should have sold for?

Well considering 9.0's are in the 6 figure range ,I was expecting it to move up at least another 100k.   There were quite a handful of books that seemed low, which was surprising as most went for record breaking numbers. I am anxious too see what Lou adds to the discussion at a latter time :P

I think I just got extremely lucky winning one of the lots but I don't want to say anything yet.  I think this auction got completely screwed up and something is going to hit the fan.

K, it is over, spill the beans. Or should I just keep refreshing your sales thread? :P

I don't understand this. Could you please elaborate?

This +1000000, As my initial thought was that CGC was involved with the design process of their holder, but it sounds like "we get it from someone else"

Perhaps if CGC was the designer , we could alleviate the instances of SCS, I am not an engineer but I know an indented inner well is a FLAWED design .

Thanks!  TOS 47 and ASM 19 are the two early SA Marvels.

Held the ASM 19 9.9 in my hand right as it sold at SDCC, and can attest to the validity of it's grade unlike the Hulk 181 9.9 same show. Definitely a moment I will remember, and thanks to Terry for letting me drool on it. I guess with 19 being a warehouse find, not likely for a similar circumstance for AF15. Although one can dream of a long box full of them :P

I'd withhold judgement without seeing the slab in person.  The top and bottom of the inner well refracts light differently than the rest of it, and sometimes makes it appear on scans and photographs there is a slight inward bend to the top and/or bottom edge of a book.  But the bend isn't actually there.

I understand what you are saying, I don't think this is the case here , but I am open to be proven wrong. The purpose of this thread wasn't to nit pick this particular book but see why CGC chose a supplier with the indents in the first place. There are countless examples of books damaged from them and I hoped that this would at least see if there were options to add a wedge to the bottom or in the future CGC could consider using a safer design. As mentioned previously they did use a design without an inner well, this was done around 2000 and again recently but at the same time they changed their exterior case to a plastic that induced waviness. The 2000 era cases I have without an inner well , have ZERO damage, and ZERO Newton rings.

Could you point out the damage to this book?

It’s slight for now , but the top edge is not straight . Look at where the indentations are in the inner well on the top left .

I would bet the bank that this will get worse .

  10. I would encourage those that have damage done to their books showcase some images here, as per CGC they have tested the inner wells extensively and the vast majority of books that are stored properly have no issues.

I am of the belief that most book's without a snug wedge that is stored vertically will suffer damage. And ANY book that suffers a hard impact to the top of bottom of the case(say during shipment) without a wedge will end up with an indented top or bottom edge. All of my high value raw books will stay that way until this design is changed. Even Voldemort has a better design for their inner well with a straight line across it. CGC has had a few case redesigns that incorporated no inner well, so one would think that this has been something they considered changing at one point?

  11. I am not so sure there is a 9.8 out there in the wild, anything is possible I suppose. I do know of some very high graded raw copies but 9.8 is an entirely other ballgame. Look at ASM 1 with in my mind a much more forgiving cover with 1 9.8 in the census.

    9.8 NEAR MINT/MINT (NM/MT): Back to Top

Nearly perfect in every way with only minor imperfections that keep it from the next higher grade. Only subtle bindery or printing defects are allowed. Cover is flat with no surface wear. Inks are bright with high reflectivity and minimal fading. Corners are cut square and sharp. Small, inconspicuous, lightly penciled, stamped or inked arrival dates are acceptable as long as they are in an unobtrusive location. Spine is tight and flat. Staples must be original, generally centered and clean with no rust. Paper is white, supple and fresh. Only the slightest interior tears are allowed.

I pasted this just to refresh my memory, and looking back at marvel's paper quality on this issue I really wonder if a 9.8 is possible, perhaps a gifted grade ala Promise Collection?

Certainly anxious to be proven wrong :P
