All I can say is I hope these boards stay around for a while. I migrated here from another comic site a couple years ago now and while I still enjoy that site, it just does not have the depth and variety and mass participation that these boards offer. Facebook groups are hard for me as a Canadian buyer/seller. Great for selling, poor for buying as it seems prices are often inflated. When I can come on here and get a better deal (that is accounting for exchange rate, and high shipping costs), it is kinda hard to endorse and frequent the FB groups. There are some American ones that are the same I feel. CGC can do whatever they want to make money here, whether its by clicks or ads or whatever. If they charge me to use the forums, I would be out. To me, it makes sense and shouldn't be that costly of an endeavour to have these here but...alas, what do I know.

90's cheap paper and grading?
comicginger1789 replied to Jjmmm's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
Right, I just mean what causes the rippling is the fact that they did soak up moisture on a more microscopic level and were very sensitive to temperatues and humidity and rippled easy. But you don't see enough of it to where it damages the paper or stains or anything. Hence why a nice press can help -
Worth Buying Signed Comics?
comicginger1789 replied to Nightwingsbutler's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
As a collector, I don't worry AT ALL about future worth of my personal collection. I buy what I like, enjoy it and it does so happen that a lot of it has value but I don't care about that. I am not looking at the end of the rainbow. Realistically, if I can get the money back in 50 years when I am old and grey (or pass them along), I would be happy. If you are buying because you like but also want to see it gain in value, signed copies of comics that are hot in the moment can be tough. It may go for money now, but that interest could really drop in the future. Also, if it does go down in value, will that upset you? If that is the feeling you would have, don't buy it. I have comics in my PC that I overpaid on if viewed as an investment but I am fine with it because I don't view it like that. -
Lotsa little things. Too many to be fine but not enough to put squarely in VG. 4.5-5.0 seems right. A solid copy and the kind I go for when I hunt early Spideys

Interior Tears Question
comicginger1789 replied to comicginger1789's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
What if the book were 9.2-9.4? Would you bump down to 9.0 or worse? Curious for future reference and if it’s something that turns one off. Honestly because it’s not a missing coupon or something nasty, I don’t mind one bit but that’s just this collectors feelings. -
I kinda want to see a 9.8 double cover where someone has scribbled all over the first cover but the inner cover receives that near perfect grade.

I think you mean that is one gorgeous copy, that is one gorgeous copy.

Desirability plays a role for sure. Personally, if it is a "nothing" book, the most I might consider paying just to have it is 50% more than FMV. That would be the most. Genrally, I think a 25% mark up is fair and if selling in auction, would start there and see where it goes, if anywhere at all.

CATS only, the purrr-fect cover...

I mean, it is not the best and easily noticed cat but this cover stands out as a bronze age fav for me. -

90's cheap paper and grading?
comicginger1789 replied to Jjmmm's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
Yeah the only thing to watch is that a lot of late 80s and early 90s paper seems to soak up moisture and can leave you with a rippling effect. It is noticeable, the bottom of pages will appear rippled and there will be no real evidence of water damage. These books just need a good press is all. -
PGM Captain Marvel Adventures 50
comicginger1789 replied to waver99's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
I was being a littler harsher, 7.0-7.5 but generally, I am always a grade lower than what CGC tends to like to give GA books, if thats any solace. -
PGM Captain Marvel 14
comicginger1789 replied to Smiley424's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
I will jump on board the 9.8 potential train wooooot woooot. But to avoid lawsuits, I will get off at 9.6 station. -
I don't think it is 9.6-9.8 I do think it is 9.2-9.4 though. Corners aren't as sharp, I see some spine ticks...for personal grading I would peg at 9.2

PGM JIMMY OLSEN #134 IT'S A HARD ONE?

1.8-2.0 -
Hi everyone, I am relatively new to Golden Age stuff in general (within the past 5 years I have really tried to grown my knowledge) and while I feel I have a slight handle on superhero, horror and sci fi stuff, I am kinda clueless when it comes to Westerns. I was wondering if anyone here who is a diehard Western collector might shoot me a message as I am going to be looking at a collection in the coming week. Lady says she has a bunch of 10 cent stuff and I just want to know what to look for or even if I don't end up buying, extend the olive branch to someone who is genuinely interested. For me, I go based of covers a lot of the time with Western stuff...if I like it, I will buy it but I do not have much at all in the personal collection. Anyway, I will likely do a post once I see this collection and go from there but wanted to message here in case anyone can give me some ideas heading in of stuff to go for and stuff to just avoid.

Yup If people don't like the fact that Canadian Price variants are not all worth more automatically, don't buy them. There are collectors that have to have them and pay more for them on key issues. They are rarer, absolutely. But rarity does not make a comic worth more automatically. If you think it should, well I've got a one-of-a-kind pair of socks with unique holes in them that I am pretty sure are the only ones on the planet. I'll sell them to you for $100. Anyways, for me personally, I don't care. If I find them, cool...neat! And if I don't, I don't. Attempting to monetize these seems silly to me because, while there are less of them, there are still A LOT of them. You want rarer? How about pence copies from the sixties and seventies. Smaller market, population and amount of printings there. Oh but you dont like how it's not the same currency? Picky picky aren't we! (Hey I am in the same boat lol) End of the day, if you take 100 collectors and ask them to pick a book to finish their run of whatever, they pick the American versions. You need those 4-5 guys/gals who just have to have the CPV and want to pay more for it in order for them to be more valuable.

Post your Garage Sale/Flea Market/Antique Mall Finds Here
comicginger1789 replied to Shark's topic in Comics General
My brother called me up the other day. Yard sale next door to him and there were comics! Boxes of Classics Illustrated (he said the guy likes history and stuff) but there was a pocket of superhero books, about 30 or so that my brother grabbed for me for ten bucks. A couple highlights. Nothing is high grade but there are a few things I needed and hey you can’t beat paying 30 cents for old comics! It helps he lives in a totally different area than me. Gives me a way to connect and hunt as he is always gracious to check stuff out for me and tends to frequent the garage/yard sales more often as there are more where he lives. -

Crappy First Issue Collectors Thread! Read at Your Own Risk

They def have gone up in value but I’d argue that Eternals and Spider-Woman are far from drek. At least, I enjoy both!
