Many of us I know have found or purchased collections or books off people because we were a known collector. It’s great when this happens and if it hasn’t happened to you, tell more people about your passion. I wanted to talk about the stage I am currently in. What I call the imagination stage. It’s a great stage and I guess is a version of “the thrill of the hunt” that is one of the many reasons we collect. On Friday, I was dropping off a donation from a local business to a friend/colleague at work for our fundraiser. I also mentioned I would be putting together a little stack of comics and graphic novels and such to give away. She then asks how big of a collector I am and I briefly explain how long I’ve collected. She then says “we’ll I have some comics, maybe I should have you look at them” Now hearing this is always exciting. Because ya never know…even if it is more often than not boxes of stuff like Youngblood 1 and other late 80s/early 90s common stuff. She’s not much older than I so I assume immediately this is what she’s talking about. But she then adds they were given to her by her neighbour when the neighbours husband passed. I asked how old he was and she said 75. Now I wish I had asked a few more questions but I left it at “well hey definitely bring them in and I can at the very least see if there some value there”. She agreed to do so sometime this week. And thus I am now in the imagination stage. Imagining what could be in this box. And it’s an exciting stage. Could it be something amazing? Could it be Gold Key and coverless charltons? Could it be 90s common stuff? Either way I will update this thread and until I see them, feel free to dream with me or share your own similar situations where you had no idea what comics might be coming your way but you knew you were going to see comics of some sort…when they did did they meet expectations? Exceed them? Severely disappoint?

As for a question of value, I should think that a 1.0-2.0 book that looks great despite the detached cover would sell for much more (and likely will be priced more too) than a complete and attached ragged looking book covered in coffee stains (which should be sold for and valued less than the other)..

Depends on the book... For silver age books going into my ASM collection, with the exception of a few yet to acquire that I should just be thankful to have period, I do not want detached covers. For old books from the 40's and 50's, as long as they present nice enough, it is an exception I am willing to make. For some reason a detached cover bothers me less than a detached page of centrefold. Not sure why....

All I will say is this...if anyone investing in She Hulk 1, I would be dumping it hard right now. I could be very wrong but and will happily admit it if I am but yeesh...who found any bit of that trailer funny? Was worse than cheesy.

People have already answered...magazines CGC will grade and have a holder for. Those treasuries are substantially larger and CGC does not as of yet have a slab for them. CGC needs to fix their horrible magazine slabs first before they worry about tackling something to contain a treasury sized comic. The magazine ones are flimsy and prone to easy damage when shipped.

PGM X-Men # 50
comicginger1789 replied to O Doyle Rules's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
Agree. The spine and corners and edges look sharp which CGC loves on older books. 8.0-8.5 would not shock me, maybe more. Hard to tell if near top staple is stain or just slight discolouration -
Hi all, A Small lot of cool books here. Den 1-10 (missing issue 5) Horrors In the Dark 1-2 All in VF range. Not too sure how to price as sales are all over but let’s go $80USD shipped. I mean I can see similarities to a lot of other signatures. I also like to ask myself why would somebody fake a signature on THIS book? Kind of a random one to do it on. Sure, perhaps done to increase the value of an otherwise cheap low grade copy but...I still say it is more real than fake. If concerned though, return and stick to buying legit signature. If you can live with a lie and the price, that is good too. And if you really must know, certain people will charge you for such things.

Bent and dirty interior pages?
comicginger1789 replied to O Doyle Rules's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
You can unfold yourself as best as possible and then, if pressing or getting pressed, the person (if well experienced) will make sure those are flattened back to normal (or near normal as tiny stress/fold lines may be seen) As for the dirt, depends what it is. If it can be erased with an eraser and other such tools, sure. If not then it is there to stay -
"Colored in" interior pages
comicginger1789 replied to gadzukes's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
Should an experiment be performed here? Most of these Millies have such pages, yes? It would be intriguing to see what a nice coloured page vs a not nice coloured page vs an "old" coloured page (assuming CGC would care if it appeared to have been coloured a long time ago or recently) would grade. Personally I am in the camp of 5.0 for this book....there are some that I feel are much lower. But a messy coloured page I would personally drop to a 4.0 -
2 questions regarding pressing
comicginger1789 replied to JD112868's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
There are some people out there who have a secret formula for assisting with improving page quality. I don't know what it is but it is not pressing....and I personally would never have it done but maybe there comes a day when page quality is a HUGE thing (recall pressing never was), and my mind may change. -
I agree 6.0. Mainly due to the tanning to the edges. If that were not present this would grade much higher

Can you elaborate? I am curious how you can tell this book was once slabbed...only thing I can think of that you are alluding to is the indentations on the back cover from the staples, perhaps suggesting that the books was sandwiched between an inner well, causing such marks. If that IS what you are referring to, well my copies of thicker bound books also all have this due to storage in boxes for a long time...I know with certainty they have never been slabbed. But if there is something else you are referring to I would love to know

PGM Werewolf by Night #32 - THE GRADE IS IN
comicginger1789 replied to Matt1982's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
Does page quality matter? Yes to certain collectors. Personally, I don't like brown page edges or brittle pages. And generally, a better page quality on a book means it would sell for more than a copy in the same grade with a worse page quality (ex a book with white pages would sell more than one with cream to off white pages) Does page quality help determine final grade? Good question. I would imagine to a degree it plays a roll. Maybe not though and maybe it is viewed separately. But I would think a book with heavy browning to edges of the covers and pages (despite being structurally pristine) would see that flaw reflected in its overall grade. Page quality is posted on every slab, visible for all to see. If a comic has white pages does it get a bump in grade? Another good question. I think grading goes back to the structure of the book. You can have a 2.5 book with white pages but the page quality does not bump it up to a 3.0. If anything, as said before, it is more likely to mean it sells for a little more than a similar 2.5 copy with worse page quality.
