I was in the same boat as you and I chose to get it graded (granted, the fact that it would also be an SS series with Bagley, ssignature was a big factor too). Moderns are cheap to grade and it's good to know exactly what the grade on that book is since there is a big difference in prices. For this book, I think it's worth it since the staples and tear marks are both production defects.

I'm pretty sure it only applies to comics, TCG is pretty new for them. When you click on their site to see their kits, is there any indication that it works for TCG? If not, then I would say they don't.

Definitive Darkseid Story/Stories?
William-James88 replied to theCapraAegagrus's topic in Comics General
That's a good one though I do also like Cosmic Odyssey. I think that's a better counterpart to the Infinity gauntlet since it deals with all the heroes. While I get the idea of Final Crisis, I really hate Darkseid in it. He doesn't even take a step, he just sits in a chair. And he isn't the big villain either, just a prelude to the Vampire Monitor who wasn't even introduced in the main series. Man, Final Crisis was a mess. -
I guess that's just the price of living in Canada. We don't have access to as good deals and CGC is pricier BUT we also don't have all the bad that comes with living in the US at the moment (won't way more than that). You win some you lose some.

Hello, just something to send to your grading team. On Superboy 0 (1994), could you add the note "First appearance of King Shark in Cameo" ? Thank you

It's not just as good because you get no yellow label! Joking aside, I have done the research and as a Canadian it is indeed cheaper to buy the books already slabbed. Especially since in 90% of cases, the slight increase you may pay for a slabbed book over a raw book is even less than what it cost Americans to slab (not even counting the times when a raw book costs more than a slabbed book). I did send some books to CGC, but that is because those were rare books and Canadian variants. Yeah that's because the US sees Canada as an international location. Not CGC's fault, these are just the going rates. It sucks because in Canada, we have a partnership with the USPS for packages sent to the US. So we have 3 tiers, domestic, US and international. The US only has two tiers. I think it's because there is a greater percentage of Canadians who send to the US than Americans who send to Canada. For instance any of us selling on e-bay would probably have to ship to the US to sell our books since the Canadian market alone would not be enough. But in the US, the market is big enough that they can rely on domestic sales and not offer to ship to Canada.

Seems like 120 is a very Canadian number.

I know, I fixed it and I also replaced Amazing Spider-man 15 with the slightly better key, Amazing Fantasy 15

I can't either. I've been over this book since I got it. Looked at the spine especially, like LionsDen suggested. I don't see it. The only thing I can think is that they interpreted the blotch at the bottom corner to be a colour touch, rather than a printing defect (and honestly, not sure I should call it that either since all copies have it, so it's not really a specific defect on my copy). But if that's the case, then CBCS just went down an extra notch since they should have done their due diligence.

This is a 4.0?
William-James88 replied to vheflin's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
Speaking of books that look bad for the grade, I stumbled upon this one. Sure, I guess it's an 8.0, but it's the ugliest 8.0 I have ever seen. -
That aint one of the cheap books and with the DC Fandome event that just happened, interest in it might have surged more than ever. Is this a copy of yours? If so, then CONGRATS! The keys have demand, special covers too, WWII stuff as well. But the bulk does not. I rarely spend more than guide and more often than not spend less than guide. Here's an example from stuff I bid on at Heritage, the Fawcett book was the one with the least bidders and that 8.0 from 1949 sold for half of what a 6.5 Detective Comics from 1950 sold for.

Determining Value for Pressing and Grading
William-James88 replied to Chudders's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
Your not the only one who thinks so , which is why I was able to get such great prices for ridiculously rare books. Anyways, what did you end up writing for your submission to CGC? -
By the way Ceasar's Ghost, I am glad you brought this topic back up. While I have indeed bought some cheap Fawcetts recently, they were always the mid to low grade kind where they are not the "top 5" graded. I have noticed that some issues are attaining new heights in terms of prices with some people sending in some of the lesser graded Fawcetts and selling them on ComicLink with the notion that these are Top 3,4,5 graded. It's obviously not hard to obtain that when some issues have less than 5 graded copies in the guide, and the reason there aren't more graded is because it's often not worth it. But people took a chance, I guess and I now often get outbid due to someone wanting to own one of the "top 3" graded copies of a random Marvel Family issue. So some slabbed copies sell more than guide now. The seller still probably would have made more money selling them raw (since books that era cost about $50 all together to get graded) but nominal wise, we are seeing new heights.

Determining Value for Pressing and Grading
William-James88 replied to Chudders's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
I am pretty sure we are talking abut the books as items themselves rather than the stories they contain. At least, I do. Like look at this one in my collection, while it is a comic book it is also a memento of US WWII culture (or an artifact of propaganda, depending on your meaning of the words). Also, artists from this era did not go to "cartooning" school, they were illustrators who studied in fine arts. So unlike now, we see art that brings in natural proportions and detail to this new fantastical setting of superheroics. Mac Raboy, whose art you see below, is the best example of that. It's a comic that came out just 4 years after the Action Comics 1, so reading and collecting GA is understanding and owning the birth of the phenomenon that now reigns supreme in today's pop culture. -
Has anyone seen this before?
William-James88 replied to Missy1987's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
That would be the first step. -

No, they won't. Keep your books and don't get them graded. -

Just to add to the discussion, here is a remaindered GA book I have. And it was indeed sold to me as a .5 -

I think the one that would help more, from what you and I see here every day, would be the reverse: Visual appeal doesn't translate to a high technical grade.
