  1. Id think so too. bad timing for Heritage's sake, huh?...
  2. okay, so the question now becomes louder: Does the emergence of these super high grade slabbed SA DC keys that many would have rightly begun to believe did not even exist suggest that there are even more out there? And if so how many? We've all answered the question before, so we know where we stand, but as Shakespeare/Hamlet said: THAT is the question1 9.6 JLA #1 ! the mind boggles.
  3. such weird marketing! Youve got your standard war comics action scene, and a nearly naked girl (in bondage yet) thrown in for extra added effect! Genius!
  4. are we all talking about a JLA#1 in 9.6? or some other copy? The existence of a 9.6 would greatly affect the 9.4 copies.
  5. thanx. Id hoped I knew that already. just confused by the word "text" to describe books he drew in. Usually lists like this say pencils or inks or artwork, ... but now I get it
  6. I think a handful of people would like to see a scan in the next 4 days .... if a 9/6 existed it might alter a few bids!
  7. does text mean Heath wrote the stories and didnt draw them?
  8. I knew Id be outvoted, so thats a small consolation anyway. Has the AA16 sale been consummated? I dont recall a definite resolution there.
  9. this oughtta split some votes.... Ill say--- against what I expect to be loud denunciation, --- FF1. While I dont necessarily agree with the 250 price it has in this comparison, I think FF1 has more legs and liquidity than the worlds best, super-sweet Church Flash #1. To me it boils down to First rate vs second rate characters.... plus as time marches on, the extra 20 years a GA key has behind it (as older and rarer) means less and less compared to current comics business and character awareness.
  10. crazy new world record for a pulp at the time. still is I think.
  11. was the pope just in NYC??? of COURSE he has one.
  12. I was kidding around. Dont think he ever showed the cover.
  13. Tarzan ALL THE WAY! Did you ever stop to think just how imbedded into popular culture Tarzan has been? Movies. TV shows, books, comics, Animated movies. Animated TV series. Sheets, pillow cases. Kids books. Toys etc etc Unfortunately All Story is a pulp, and very few people care about pulps (except around here of course. Tec 1 is a cool book, but, umm, why? Detective starts with #27. Without Batman, no one would care about 1 - 26 at all. anyway, you dont have to agree, but thats my pick ----- All Story
  14. Looking back at the pages I can see how being in control of the greytones himself freed him up to explore his backgrounds, as you say. He could see what he had done each step of the way and not have to use overlays and guess how theyd come back
  15. great description of Cranes drawing techniques. I believe Ben Day was a system of treated boards and matching chemicals. The boards had dots and/or crosshatched lines printed on them with an invisible ink. And teh artist would use the matching chemicals with a bush, and wherever they painted, the dot/crosshatch effect would appear. Apparently this was a "state of the art" time saver for artists and assistant so that they wouldnt have to do all that laborious inking. A lot of sports cartoonists used it too as it was a simple (and cheap way) to get a halftone effect without paying extra for film and masking combo work. When you were done, you had a finished line art piece that was camera ready but had the visual appeal of screned work. Years later, Letraset created press-on textures that did the same time-saving thing. Cerebus was created using press on textures for Cerebus's greytoned fur. Sim used different sized dots for closeups and small far away sized Cerebus figures. The effect was as if his fur was actually dots that looked bigger or smaller depending on how far away from you Cerebus was.
  16. wow what beautiful drawing! Way too classy for a kiddy story, but ta pleasure to look at. And really cool coloring too.
  17. WOW! What great perspective. DC sure had a thing for man vs. plane images. based on where that plane is diving at him from, I think he oughtta get behind the plane for protection rather than out in the open like that? That compositions gonna get him killed!
  18. they dont look wrong to me. They are right in the sweet spot in this snapshot: right in the center of the focal range (accounting for their sharpness) and lighting (not out on the street nor way in the dark back of the store). Could this be faked? sure. The only hard part is skewing the new cover scans onto curved surfaces, the rest is easy. But, why? Especially considering the source is from the family archives and is NOT about comics, just dads neat little store.
  19. recovered not as in "was once lost" but literally it has a new cover, right?
  20. I know I'm a bit late for the pile-on, but as a 20-year graphic arts professional who has taught Photoshop to other professionals, I have to say that the line of comics hanging above Bailey's head are certainly very suspect. The degree of clarity and dynamic range do not match the rest of the image. Why would anyone do this? Fantasy gratification. You see it a lot with fake celebrity porn. I've actually had dreams of exactly this situation, going back in time with a bunch of mercury dimes and hitting the newstands. Seeing these photos certainly scratches that itch in a pleasurable way. Here's a simple Photoshop tip for anyone trying to decipher muddy or dark images, for example trying to ID comics that are mostly in shadow: Image/Adjust/Levels/drag the midrange slider to the left until the image becomes readable. This will likely destroy the appearance of the image in many ways, but will also potentially reveal some surprising detail. The data has to be there in the first place, a block of absolute 100% black will never gain new detail, but very often things *look* to be 100% black but are not and contain useful detail that needs to be enhanced to become visible. [/tutorial] always good to hear from a professional... I tried levels but dont see anything out of the ordinary. Did you see something here or just suggesting the possibility?
