It looks like Wandering Star is blowing out their remaining inventory of REH limited editions on ebay.uk. If there are any of you Conan fans that were thinking about picking these up but were put off by the high price tags, now's your chance to pick some up much cheaper than I've ever seen for sale anywhere - way below cover price. The regular limited editions of the first two Conans are 30 pounds each and the Ultra editons (100 copies) are 75 and 100 pounds respectively.

Time to bump this thread with some rare REH goodness.

Strange Tales was a short-lived rival to Weird Tales that popped up in the early 30's and lasted for seven issues. Most of the WT regulars like REH, Clark Ashton Smith, Hugh Cave, Frank Belknap Long, and others wrote for them before they finally folded. Issues from this title are much, much scarcer than their WT counterparts from the same time.

This issue from June 1932 predates "The Phoenix on the Sword," the first Conan story by several months, but it contains the REH story "People of the Dark," which stars a black-haired, sword-wielding barbarian named Conan of the Reavers. This Conan is from the historical dark ages rather than the Hyborian Age, but he can certainly be seen as a proto-type for Conan the Cimmerian.

The earlier issues of Weird Tales are pretty scarce as well and this July 1925 issue is no exception. It's also a grail for pulp collectors as it contains "Spear and Fang," a cave-man story that is the first published work of a young 19-year old REH.

This one is beat, but I'm stoked to have a copy in any condition.

Seen this offered in many a Heritage catalog but have never taken a shot at one.

Love this one, Jeff.

Thanks for posting as always!

Great posts, Jeff!

Over the years, I have found that I can get as much enjoyment out of a recreation or an enlarged print as an original painting, so I think you are on the right track!

Thanks Rich! Also, there's the fact that I could never afford the $50K plus for an original Brundage cover - if it even survives. Many of them didn't since they were pastels and done in the days before fixative. :(

The flagellation theme actually crops up in a number of REH's works. Among his papers was a list of books on the subject along with prices:

"A History of the Rod" by Cooper; illustrated; published in London: $7.50

"The Merry Order of St. Bridget" by Margaret Anson; illustrated, privately printed: $5.00

"Curiosa of Flagellants & History of Flagellation"; bound in one volume; illustrated; privately printed: $3.00

"Painful Pleasures" translated by W.J. Meusal; illustrated; privately printed: $5.00

"Nell in Bridewell" by W. Reinhard; (translation) illustrated; published in Paris by the Society of British Bibliophiles: $5.00

"The Misfortunes of Colette"; illustrated; privately printed: $3.00

"The Strap Returns"; illustrated; The Gargoyle Press: $2.00

"Tracts of Flagellation" by George Colman; paper bound; published in England. Henry Thomas Buckle: $6.00

"The Rodiad" by George Colman; paper bound; published in England: $1.50

"Tender Bottoms" by Guenoles; illustrated; published by American Ethnological Press, Inc.: $3.00

"Sadism and Masochism" by Eulenburg; illustrated; published by The New Era Press: $3.45

"Presented in Leather" by Claire Willows; illustrated; privately printed: $5.00

"Padlocks and Girdles of Chastity"; privately printed; illustrated: $1.50

TOTAL : $50.95

We know he ordered at least two of these and possibly three. He discusses the topic of flagellation with HPL in their correspondence and it seems he understood very well that sex sells and that throwing in a scene with a naked chick getting whipped by another naked chick was a sure-fire way to get that $50 cover bonus.
