another article from the milwaukee journal 7/8/66.

oh the horror of burning a thousand comics! but how many people

would want books possibly contaminated with polio virus? however infection can

only occur if the virus is ingested. hm

oh oh amateur restoration though...

notice that these older articles include the home addresses of people in the article.

I've found a few of the other images I have collected over the years...

This is the earliest image I've found to date.... This must be Feb/Mar '39, so just about 8 months after Action 1 was released, and about 3 months before 'Tec 27. The image is small and grainy, but the comics are easy to make out on the left side of the photo

1939_early.jpg

from top to bottom, I can make out the following books...

Action Comics #9, Feb '39

Adventure Comics #35, Feb '39

Detective Comics #24, Feb '39

Funny Picture Stories vol 3, #2 Mar '39

So how rare is a picture of Action Comics #1 on a newstand? Does one even exist? Is it even rarer than a high grade copy itself?

Please dont count Micheal carbonaros ad.

I have an original 1938 COLOR Kodachrome newsstand picture with a prominently displayed ACTION # 1 and all the other comics !!!!!!

It looks like it was taken on a warm and sunny day, sometime in late MAY 1938.

It's truly breathtaking.

It just takes your breath away.

Please I [and we] would love to see it!

I mean, "I wish I had....."

(sorry, bye the way, couldn't help myself)

I honestly spend a couple hours a week looking for old newsstand pics. I still keep finding them, so MAYBE (hopefully) a REAL GEM exists out there.

I've seen the INFAMOUS NYC newsstand with the bogus ACTION 1's photoshopped in, is the the Michael C. ad you speak of ?

Is there a link to it??

I love these photos, I worked for two summers on 4-Color Heidelberg presses while in college, and while we mainly did magazines, a number of comics came through (Graphic Novels). So I've always related to this photo on a personal level.

I'm a graphic designer, and well familiar with printing. I love 'em too. (thumbs u

Metropolis Comics has a framed press sheet with multiples of one of the early Mystic Comics covers (#9, I believe?) on their office wall. It is eye-popping to see!

and last update for me today... Ending on a more solemn image. From Dec 8th, 1941, one day after Pearl Harbor. You can just make out the top edge of some comics, to the right of the lantern base (World's Finest is easiest to see)...

I like that the kid in the second picture down is holding a copy of the first issue of EC's Crypt of Terror #17 (#1). I bet Mom and Dad were really pleased when he brought that home. I can just hear the kid saying "look Mom and Dad at this swell new type of comic that has just come out."
