Ahhhh...That's the answer I was expecting..."LEAVE". The Chairmen of this Board can continually wipe their feet on an individual un-interruptedly, and suddenly, when someone ZOOMS in and presents a different point of view, in defense of someone who has stated that he's had it with swimming against the tide against his detractors and knows that it's a lost cause defending himself against those with selective deafness, everyone obviously rattles.

In a perfect world where NOBODY ever makes mistakes, like CGC and all the posters on this Board, I'd rather buy the CGC graded book BUT in the real world, it just doesn't work that way, sorry to say. If I buy a $2000 book graded CGC 8.0 and I feel that they fumbled the ball on the grade (I know..sacreligious thought) and it's my belief that there's an F/VF in that capsule (after all, it IS my money and I AM allowed to my opinion regardless of what ringleader/citizen Rudd avers), I'd like to be able to return it for a refund instead of having to immediately reauction it on Ebay with part of the bottom cropped off the scan to hide the obvious VF negating flaw! Guess again...You can't because all CGC sales are final (I STILL can't fathom as to why). If I buy it unslabbed, which quite honestly, I would rather not do on single, sight unseen (in person..scan only) purchases, at least if I think it is an F/VF, I CAN and WILL return it.

It's a good message Board with some intelligent postings and I never said it wasn't. I merely pointed out that like most heavily biased message boards, it can be a frustrating place for those that NEED defending, wish to defend themselves, or simply present a view diametrically opposed to the general status quo.

You're right that not all comic books has to be "slabbed". I have some books graded by CGC and I have more books than I need not "slabbed". Each his own, everyone has different opinions on this matter.

Hey Carl,

If you've seen Barb Wire then you know what I mean. Don't waste 2 hrs of your life watching Nick Fury, it will suck the life out of you...you have been warned! grin.gif

Instead take those 2 hrs and donate your time posting messages on the CGC boards smirk.gif

"I merely pointed out that it's the same kind of fanaticism in one's train of thought and tolerance for others who DON'T share your views that every comic over a certain value should be submitted to CGC or not transacted at all."

I think that drawing a parallel between fanaticism and submitting comics to CGC is comical (pun not intended). Essentially, it has nothing to to with fanaticism or tolerance. Rather, this is all about COMMON SENSE. Hypothetically speaking, if you have a 9.4 or better comic that guides for $300 or more, if you have it CGC-graded, you can exponentially increase the multiple paid for that comic. Unless of course, the comic has been restored or you are not confident that it will come back as a NM 9.4. Additionally, waiting to get your comic back from CGC is a small price to pay to increase your profit.

On a side note, I recall seeing a comic-keys auction for a low number, high grade, Amazing S-M which was CGC graded with a purple restored label. In the auction description, however, comic-keys was adamant that CGC was wrong in giving it a restored grade and he guaranteed that it wasn't restored.

So, comic-keys: If I buy a comic from you, send it off to CGC, and it comes back as "restored" can I have my money back or should I disregard CGC and just take your word that it isn't restored? Please let me know, because you have some nice comics I wouldn't mind bidding on. Thank you.

I definatly agree that some books that leave CGC are clearly not the grade given. (BTW - I'm not defending or supporting anyones arguments other than this side argument so don't feel offended). Example given: I bought a book off of Comiclink (Iron Man #2 CGC 9.8). When I recieved it the book had spine stress. I know that grading is a person to person thing but I really think spine stress on a 9.8 is pushing it. I luckly bought from someone who returned the book for me and I will and have still bought books off of to this day. The same was true of a Amazing Spider-Man #144 CGC 9.8. I had to sell this book but it also had spine stress. I don't know if these were the books coming out of CGC's facility when they were just getting started and maybe had liberal grading at the time. Even if graded 100% accuratly by their standards they may not be by mine.

David,

I don't recall "ragging on" or saying anything that can even be construed as negative about CGC at all. Can you quote me? An excerpt perhaps in this ridiculous string of threads where I stated anything of the sort? My posts dealt with the miscontentuous attitude of the posters themselves and their continual badgering of Matt who had obviously, if nobody noticed, seeing the futility in it, gave up in trying to be heard. How many times can you answer the same question just reworded and posed differently? I simply made observations. Valid ones. Factual ones, based on nothing else other than the posts themselves. The internet message boards empower individuals by giving them a false sense of omnipotence because of distance. Things are said, words exchanged that would NEVER be repeated face to face in the real world, and as someone who has NEVER avoided a direct confrontation and in some way looks forward to them as a way of settling matters, I can assure you of this. It's called "Old School". If I see a pack of hyaneas circling a downed individual, that's enough to involve me. It's called fairness. That's ALL I have to see and you can DEAL me IN. If I feel someone is needlessly being ganged up on (and is that the real purpose of this board anyway..I doubt CGC had that in mind when they created it) you can count on me to quickly change the odds.

You're exaggerating, which of course is one of the things you're good at after decades of experience at unethical and criminal behavior. I never said Matt HAD to submit every book to CGC, I just asked him why he submitted all but a few. And he never answered. Not everyone has to submit everything to CGC, but those that don't better be honest. So far I trust ebay users "essoilman" and "amazingspider-fan," and they sell unslabbed high grade from time to time. They haven't done anything to make me question them. Matt has. That's what every single question I asked Matt was intended to do, probe his ethics.

You want to know when I became slightly "biased" towards CGC? The day I realized that somebody as friendly, courteous, intelligent, knowledgable, and fun to talk to as yourself was truly a f@!?ing snake at heart. Back when you were selling that Spidey #1 at the same time somebody else was selling a Spidey #1 CGC 9.4 and I asked you why you didn't slab your high-grade keys. Your explanations made no sense, so I started asking every dealer about you. Not just a few, but I've asked almost two dozen. Thanks to people like you, until information about restoration detection is more widely available, CGC is the best thing going in high-grade comics.

Why am I bothering to argue? You can't talk a sociopath out of his basic self-centeredness and disrespect for other people, especially when they've been that way for 50+ years, or however old you are.

Yes, You've got it half right!! I remember that vividly. The Spiderman 5 was one of those unassembled/uncut covers that at some point was attatched to an interior. CGC labeled it purple 9.4, Trimmed, CLEANED and PRESSED. It wasn't cleaned and pressed, it was simply one of those file copy covers that was so clean with no transparency that it LOOKED cleaned and pressed. The book was re-auctioned in the SAME restored holder only TWO WEEKS LATER (nobody was hiding anything) NEVER STATING THAT IT WASN'T RESTORED (because it was technically trimmed AFTERMARKET, since it was never assembled at time of issuance by Marvel), but simply described with total accuracey and the story of the book's origins as told by the original seller. It was re-auctioned for almost 3 times as much as purchased once the entire story of exactly what it was had been described. Now, if you've read this post you'll have 100% of the story instead of 50% with the other 50% embellished and fantasized.

OK, thanks for the explanation. I guess I'll just take your word that it was not restored (trimmed, cleaned, and pressed). If I ever see that comic for auction I will totally disregard the purple label and keep your story in mind. Thanks again.

"Decades of criminal and unethical behavior". "Friggin' snake at heart". "Sociopath" (a word you continuosly use that you learned from Bob). "Self-centered". "Disrespectful". "...for over 50+ years". RISE to the occassion, C.R. So, Citizen Rudd, the self-appointed bastion of the Board is the first to descend to a post of outright name-calling. You, with your 5 years of experience, are a wonderful "educator" as you have previously stated, evidenced by your dramatic yet anti-climatic post, though I must confess, I'd have bet $100K against a dollar that you'd have done that at least 3 posts ago. You've been holding out on me. I feel somewhat slighted, but us elephants NEVER forget a kind word.

Do we have a reading disability here? Re-read my last post. The book was clearly scanned STILL in the CGC purple holder and was described as trimmed down from an uncut cover (never trimmed in the first place) but technically "trimmed" from an uncut cover at time of assembly probably 30 years after published, but NEVER cleaned and pressed. It was NOT represented as UNRESTORED or Blue top status in any way. -Methuselah

I didn't learn the word "sociopath" from Storms, I watch a lot of "Law and Order" and A&E crime shows. The word fits though, doesn't it? Surely a "doctor" is able to diagnose themself.

This is all pretty interesting but it's hard to tell the players with all these anonymous writers. But I'd like to say this:

1. It seems to me very unfair to assume something negative about a dealer or a book because it not slabbed. There a several reasons not to get a book slabbed

A. Seller needs the money now and doesn't want to wait 3 months.

B. Seller doesn't agree with the CGC grading. They have undisclosed

grading standards and perhaps the seller prefers the slightly looser overstreet standards. Remember we now have two separate and distinct grading standards in our hobby, one thoroughly documented, one still mostly unknown.

C. Seller doesn't trust the USPS.

D. Seller had a bad customer service experience with them and won't do business with them again.

Maybe a couple of those are lame and yes, they can get more money from a slabbed book but I just feel it's dangerous to fault someone for not using CGC.

Freedom of choice is a phenomenal asset in our country. I use CGC all the time. That doesn't mean everyone should.

2) Private auctions are legal and allowed by Ebay and a seller can use them if he wants and shouldn't have to explain himself to anybody, frankly. People are different and have different feelings about things.

I know there's more going on in this thread than just these issues and I'm not taking anyone's side because I've never met any of you people but I thought I'd mention my opinion on these two issues.

Thanks.

John

So, my "esteemed" colleague, what exactly is your Medical Board Certified qualified diagnosis as an educator and clinical psychologist based on besides your viewing experience of Law & Order episodes? Your expertise is as deep as it is profound. I had no idea that you're it extended beyond the scope of this hobby. I was surprised to learn of your experience as a great educator, but now, because of your vast knowledge as a Reknowned Clinical Psychologist self-schooled by the viewing TV based courtroom drama, I view you in a completely different light. I'm in awe of you. You are truly a Renaissance man of unlimited talent. At this point, there's no need for further debate about this...I personally am going to nominate you for "King of the Board" and suggest you be given 6 stars by everyone. An educator, a psychologist, a hobby expert, a criminologist..all achieved in under 30 years of living! Law and Order Episodes on A&E!! Good Lord James, don't forget an accomplished comedian as well (even though I'm sure you don't mean to be funny).

That's the best statement from an anonymous poster yet on this thread...in the words of the immortal DeForrest Kelley "It's dead Jim, dead!" Please consult this thread if there are any more questions about this subject.

Okay, I have over 150 posts, 3 stars (used to be 4), and I am far from being some pro-CGC propaganda specialist. Hell, I have won 3 CGC boxes from the comic quest trivia, and I only have 2 CGC books (with two more on the way). I have frequently said I prefer to buy non-slabbed books, and have defended alot of sellers that sell non-slabbed material. Despite all this, I have only really had one argument, (and that was with Murph so it doesn't count, he argues with everyone :-)

And you know what, why isn't 500 posts in amonth a positive thing? If Ihad the time, I would have 500 posts too. We love this hobby, and people like FF and Murph and everyone else are just talking about something they are passionate about, and often times they are educating collectors that haven't been around as long. If that isn't positive, I don't know what is. When you grow the grapefruits to log on as yourself and take what you give, maybe we'll pay attention. Until then, if we are truly as bad as you say we are, why listen?

WHERE IS THE LOVE? frown.gif I'll settle this once and for all, i'll just buy a book from comic-keys and i'll send it in to CGC. If you guys want to share on the cost of having it graded that would help, and when i get the book back i'll post a scan of what CGC gave it....does that sound like a plan? grin.gif
