I have always told people, however, that I don't think one can even compare the sales prices of the 9.2 to 9.4 to 9.6 as the variance among them will likely be quite wide. I have no idea what Metro will have as the reserve on their copy, which has never been publicly available for sale to my knowledge, but I recall Stephen saying he valued it at around $130k-$150k a year or two ago. Two years ago Motor City initially wanted $350k for the CGC 9.6, and I believe perhaps would have gone as low as $275k if someone had actually offered cash That still places my copy in the $100k range.

Mark,

By setting the market, I guess I meant the ceiling price. If it goes off at 130-150, you are definitely setting pretty for at least 100K.

What do you consider high grade?

There are six 8.0s and only 5 above that.

Do you have any idea who owns the 9.2 mp?

That one might even fit into my price range.

The 8.5 Mohawk sold for 26K in 2006. What would you think the value of that book would be today?

BTW.... I am really jealous of your blue 9.2. \(worship\)\(worship\)

I have a line on a 9.8 german edition that I would trade straight up. poke2.gif

If the CGC 9.4 sells for $130K-150K, then in my opinion, no way is a CGC 9.2 a $100K book. More like $70 to 75K for a CGC 9.2 if the CGC 9.4 is at that level. But the CGC 9.4 "should" be "worth" more than $150K (to paraphrase Aman319).

I suppose it is all academic as to what any sale would be at these grade levels since the two highest grades have never publicly sold and the 9.2 hasn't sold in 4 years, but I see absolutely no reason to suspect that a 9.2 would sell for almost half of the 9.4, especially for Showcase #4 where there is only one copy of each. That was the type of formula used years ago for CGC books.

I should also add that I don't think any "CGC 9.2/9.4/9.6 formula" typical of lower-value comics will apply to these books. I think the bigger issue is how few target buyers will be able to fork over the large amount of money required for any of the issues. There just aren't that many people out there collecting silver age DC with pockets deep enough, nor are there enough copies out there for sale, to create enough data points to determine a formula. I suspect that there will be more upper level price compression between the 9.6 and 9.4. The prior sale four years ago of the 9.2 creates something of a price floor that should protect the investment in that book (and may well serve as a benchmark for any sale of the 9.4 and/or 9.6, but it's hard to say as I am not swimming in that pool).

Well, lets go to the shallow end of the pool. Mark Wilson has about the nicest 4.0 you would ever see.

Very strong bid right out of the gate as well.

As most have stated. It is a "safe" one to buy. I don't think it will appreciate as quickly as AF 15 and FF 1, but, it is a significant comic, and, still relevant.

I still read the current Flash and, Barry is almost always in the story. As a matter of fact, he should be coming back in the new crisis (I haven't picked up the recent series yet.)

And, speaking of a nice 4.0, here's mine. I'll be liberating it at the forum dinner in L.A. before the end of the year.

Good for you! I did the same thing at Wizard Chicago in 2006, cracked out my gorgeous 6.0 restored and passed it around to all my friends, most of which had never read the real deal, and who were polite enough to not drop it in the spilled beer or snack crumbs, lol

Wow, that is a nice VG copy! You're right - great looking 4.0, structurally, and the cover whites (esp. back cover) are super bright. The inks look nice and fresh too.As an aside, I think we can take Mark Wilson at his word when he says he doesn't work on his books before submitting them. If he did, the soiling on the back cover of that Showcase 4 would not be there. lol

Scott I tried to Goggle "Newsboy Comic Collection" to get some background on it but didn't find anything? Is there a write up somewhere?

I don't know. I remember reading about it here but haven't done a google search for it.

There was an article in Comic Book Marketplace not long after Michael Goldman (Motoc City comics) brought them to market. There are three groupings of books in the collection: early Showcases, DC War, and My Greatest Adventures. All are 10 cent issues from the 1955 - 1960. The kid that owned them purchased them from the what he made as a Newspaper boy, hence the collection name. He read them carefully and saved them in his dresser where they remained until sold to Goldman. They have a slight mothball smell and many have an "L" code.OFF21-3.jpgAAMOW33-1.jpgSSWS46-1.jpg

I'd never seen those. They look great.

Thanks. I think the lowest grade I've seen is VF and there are quite a few 9.0 - 9.6.

I don't think I've ever seen you post a scan of a book you own with even slightly faded colors or less than blindingly white pages, but the colors and whites on that OAAW#65 are just stunning. (worship)

Thanks, FFB! The OAAW 65, if you can believe it, has more intense colors than my scanner can capture. I have other Newsboys that are similarly "pretty," as does Goldman, with the Showcases.

I'll bet it does. I have heard hushed whispers about the quality of your books, and rumblings that even your superb scan colors don't really do them justice. It's better that I have never seen them in person, as I would likely convulse uncontrollably. :)

As long as you don't sob or drool on them it's okay. :insane:
