Canadian Price Variants

414 posts in this topic

Question on the idea of the Canadian price variant or edition. Is the idea that you have exactly the same book but with a different price? And specifically a price that if sold in the U.S would look to be a higher priced variant.

So a pence copy is frowned upon because it is clearly foreign whereas a Canadian copy may or may not be foreign and can therefore be mistaken or perceived as a variant to the US version.

So if all that is said, why limit it to the 1982-1986 time frame. Wouldn't all books with US pricing symbols but priced for sale in Canada fall into this category? Besides some of the Harvey's, here's a Dell I've had that is a Canadian priced version.

My take on this is that foreign issues outside of Canada and U.S. should not be included in the same discussion. It is a bias, but at its most basic level of understanding, the key differentiator is with the currency and symbols used to price the books (i.e. 12¢ as opposed to using [ /- ] or 9p). If the modern day condition permits these books to be listed in online marketplaces, I think they should be listed is a price variant.

Fundamental to this line of thinking is the fact that the reason why they did print a copy with a different price is to overcome the confusion it would create for retailers who knew nothing about comics, to make certain they charged the monetary equivalent that the US-based publisher required for each copy. The only confounding aspect to the issue is that some believe that a variant needs to follow the same stream of thinking that drives the variant culture (mainly the side-by-side condition where regular price and variant priced copies were sold on the same newstand). While I don't entirely subscribe to that way of looking at variants (and I say this with a steeped understanding of variants outside of mainstream publishers like Marvel and DC), there are also many similarities in the way Canadian price variants were sold.

I have confirmed a lot of my ideas and opinions with Doug Sulipa, and one thing I have learned is that these variants (especially in Toronto and perhaps in other cities in Canada and I am going to expand this to include Michigan, Detroit and other U.S. cities which I am finding these books turning-up) were distributed in grocery stores, convenience shops (franchise and mom and pop), and the side-by-side condition did exist whereby a price variant and a multi-price edition could be bought at the same store or location. This condition of mashing-up of direct edition (multi-price) and Canadian price variants was made possible due to concerted efforts by publishers (by way of subscriptions) and distributors (like Andromeda) working to supply stores with comics. In my own experience, the overlap of sales activity for both and their appearance on newstands occurred with 7-Eleven stores in the area where I grew up.

BTW: Thanks for pointing this example out as I know I've got some of these lying around.

I was just scanning my X-Men run to help our man Chris, with the burden.

I came across this beauty!

It's a DOUBLE COVER Canadian Edition! Talk about a score :cloud9: This one is surely going south to Sarasota. I am pretty darn sure it will garner a 9.8 :wishluck:

I am currently scanning from 162 - 208. I have 'em all except for maybe 2. A couple are lesser grade, but for the most part, they are pretty nice looking copies.

Stay tuned...

Well...the only reason why it's limited to a 1982-1986 time frame is because DC and Marvel were only doing it at that time.

They weren't doing it UNTIL then, as far as anyone can tell, even though they did it in a limited manner in the 30's/40's, and everybody else (meaning Dell/Gold Key, Harvey) was doing it in the 60's-80's.....

There are just no Marvels and DC's from essentially the late 40's to the very early 80's that had "Canada priced" variants (so far as anyone can tell.)

Is this because the US v. Canada dollar was fairly equal during that time frame? I dunno, but it could be found out. Did the Canadian dollar lose so much value vs. the US dollar in the early 80's that Marvel and DC were forced to start printing 75 cent versions for newsstand copies? We know that they didn't start printing separate UK prices until Jan, 1982 cover date, and separate Can AND UK prices until Oct, 1982 cover date. Was Marvel still printing separate pence copies up to cover date Dec, 1981 under Marvel All-Colour Comics until then? That would make sense.

This is fascinating to me. Is it because some chains figured out they could get Direct Editions sooner (up to 3 weeks sooner) than newsstand copies by simply subcribing directly to these books via Marvel and/or DC, and then placing them on sale at full cover price?

Or is it because these stores (like 7-Eleven) also had Direct Market accounts with distributors like Seagate and Bud Plant and were essentially operating as mini-comic retailers themselves?

If either, do you think they ever tried to return DM books for credit that didn't sell, and were they turned down?

I can't wrap my head around a 7-Eleven being part of the DM! Fascinating!

Great stuff! :applause:

I am going to try and finish off the X-Men run this afternoon. Once I hear from our man, The Beyonder, I'll know what to scan and post next.

I have been having fun sorting through boxes upon boxes, looking for the elusive Canadian Variant. Well, fortunately for me, they aren't "as elusive"! I had bought a few collections from Canadian guys who were buying off rack at the time these were printed. I an sure that my personal collection (at folks house) has many, many of these as well. As I was going through the X-Books, it brought back fond memories. I was around 10 when these were just starting to come out. I was in the thick of my comic buying then! I believe, if this 'ol memory serves me correctly, that I was working at a LCS at that time. I was in charge of bagging and boarding as well as putting the new books out for display... :cloud9: I got A LOT of nice books from that shop!

Getting back to the DM versions on the shelves of stores like 7-11. I remember as a youngster, selling copies to the local comic shops to get more comics out there. So, it wasn't as if they were ordering from the distributor, they were sold to, or given on consignment, to the local corner stores. I believe we were doing this in the Lachine, Dorval & West-Island area of Montreal around 1983-86. Perhaps others did the same thing, and that is how these books came to be on shelves with newsstand copies???

Here is another of a different title. I notice none of these are on the list that was created earlier. I know from what I have in hand, that they run through # 7 at least.

Let's all pool together and get a list going guys!

Chris, you alive??? Nothing from you all weekend here

Thanks John!

I put the Marvel list together with the help of fellow boardies, Overstreet guide, Checking through the "Mighty Marvel Checklist" from books 1982-86 and also looking at ebay scans of certain books, titles. It was a painfull task to say the least but worth it I think.

I haven't started a DC list yet or any other publishers but I would think it could be done with the same methods. It's the obscure one shots and limited series books that were hard to determine especially since the prices were higher than .75 or .95 cents.

We could easily determine the main DC titles from that period but the rest will be harder ????

I am stunningly overbooked - as shown by my lameness in getting my VCC thread up - but will start to go through what I have, especially for DC books. There are a lot of DC books, and I think the DC price variants went longer than Marvels. There are some weird priced books ($1.35) towards the end of the run of all of the DCs.

Batman #400, for example, is an odd price variant at $2.10.

I'll make a list of all DC titles that I know of, and we can add from there.

Hey all,

RMA - Thanks for the DC list! I have been busy putting together 5 computer systems for customers, so I have not been able to scan as many books lately. It's too bad... I really enjoy doing it! I was thrilled the other night when I came across that double cover! What do you guys think something like that would fetch if 9.8? Recent sales of a regular (US) edition have been going for just over $100... being a Canadian, as well as a double cover should fetch at least double, I would guess... (shrug) Any thoughts?

I think between all of us who are interested in this, we should be able to put together an extensive list of the different books. I am finding that this little project is bringing back fond memories of purchases from the local corner store when I was a wee lad :cloud9:.

I have been browsing eBay looking for a few books; does CGC not note the Canadian edition on all of them? Is it something that the submitter needs to note in the "variant" column of the form? Just curious, as I plan on submitting quite a few books soon.

With regards to the web project; what would people like to see on the site? Besides scans of the books, lists and other info of that nature, would interviews of prominent collectors be welcomed? What about personal stories of buying off the rack back then? How about a "for sale" section. I think it would be good to have a site devoted to the Canadian Variants for those who are looking for them. The one-stop shop for all comics Canadian!

Comments and suggestions are welcomed and encouraged.

Thanks!
