Showcase 22 or Amazing Fantasy 15 a better investment

104 posts in this topic

I can't believe an AF #15 sells for $10,000 in 5.0. That's just crazy.

'00, '01, you could pick one up for $2000.

Ah well.

Imagine allocating one's real estate or stock investment into AF15 and SC22 back then.

The best investment of all was 10 years ago buying Marvel stock at $1 dollar a share. ah hindsight ;)

Um.

No.

I've made many, many, many more multiples than that, percentage wise, "investing" in ultra high grade Bronze, Copper, and Modern.

Punisher #1 - paid $10 for it, $18 to sub round trip, sold for $350+

Batman #428 - paid $5 for it....tops....$18 to sub, sold for $661, another copy for $550

Spidey #301 - paid $5 for it, again tops, $18 to sub, sold for $700+

Primer #2 - paid $30-$40 for it, $18 to sub, sold for $1125

Etc...etc....etc....

Beats AF #15 every time.

In terming a comic an "investment" I think there's some degree of specificity needed.

If it's the comic that is most likely to be liquid at, or around, the price paid for it, the answer is easy; AF 15.

If it's the comic that is most likely to realize a gain that puts it on par with any reasonably invested stock portfolio over a 3 year period, I'd say it's SC22. I think that there is room to grow in that book, especially in anything over a VG-.

The problem with this comparison is that both are surging based on the desirability and popularity of characters, but SC 22's hype is fueled partially out of love for Hal, and partially out of the perception of scarcity. If the SC 22 market gets hit hard with 4.0's-7.0's in the next 18 months, we're going to see a tremendous lessening of this book so that may greatly outpace the growth we've seen in the last 8 months.

AF 15, while "plentiful," is still a iconic comic for a large part of the community, and nearly every collector loves to have that one key that they feel validates their collection, even in low grade. Thus there is always a driving force behind AF 15 sales as collectors really want the best conditioned copy they can afford if this is the best copy of the best issue they can attain "validation." AF 15 is and always will be in this validation category, SC 22 has some work to get there.

The cat's out of the bag on SC 22, it's in Avengers 1 territory from a year ago. At a good price, snatch it up, but don't expect to double up on it right now.

I've said this before.

Around 1995 I bought a Showcase 22 in VG. At the time it was roughly a $5-700 book.

In 2008 I was looking at maybe picking up a copy again. It was roughly a $5-700 book.

My suspicion is that in 2014 it will be... a $700 book.

I doubt it will be that price again by 2014, unless the comic market as a whole takes a hit, which is possible given the economic pain we are going to endure for a while longer.

GPA averages for 4.0:

2003 - $650

2004 - $N/A

2005 - $568

2006 - $516

2007 - $590

2008 - $568

Oh yeah, it will sustain the growth/appreciation it has right now...

That would have been stupid. Everyone knows you should have been buying stock in AOL, PinkDot, and Pets.com.
