Archie Comics to introduce a gay character

Hopefully, there is a parental warning for parents that do not want their kids exposed to this type of thing. I am sure the last thing some parents want to do is explain why Kevin and another male character are holding hands or kissing. Maybe a parent was waiting to tell their 8yo kid about alternative lifestyles when they got older. I could be wrong, maybe Archie comics are like mainstream superhero comics and are geared toward an adult crowd so it doesn't matter. I don't know. I just hope parents aren't blindsided by this with no warning.

do kids read current archies anyway? seriously, it's almost pornographic, within a six issue story arc archie is getting it on with veronica and knocks up betty (ok, i actually have to read those comics to figure out if the covers have anything to do with the insides...i have been meaning to).

 

Current Archies are pretty much all younger kids read.

I work in NYC ( I am actually in the west village now at 9th Ave/15 St) working in one of the biggest Telco buildings around. What might be the norm here definitely isn't the norm everywhere else. So, most kids won't be exposed to what some kids are exposed to in the city. As far as television goes, that is up to a parent to monitor. Does nickelodeon or Disney show gay/lesbian/transgender in their shows without a parental warning? I am not a prude, but it would be nice to let kids have their innocence while enjoying a comic for kids. If Archie is now for adults and marketed as such then I guess it is all fair game.

The innocence shouldn't disappear for anyone except the ones who still think homosexuality should be frowned upon.

 

I think this WILL help ease kids and adults alike into accepting homosexuality as a normal thing.

Some might consider homosexuality normal behavior, but in a country were the majority are Christians or other faiths of one sort or another the people that think "it" is normal would be in the minority. Doesn't seem like a good business model to inject something into a comic book that the majority of people might not want their kids exposed to.

If Archie does go through with this, it might net them some tepid national publicity on a slow news day, provide the late night talk show hosts with a few more cheap jokes, and--after MAYBE causing an infinitesimally small blip in sales--it will fade from public memory, but live on forever (oh joy!) as a bibliographical reference and/or footnote for innumerable masters and Ph.D. theses in "Gender Studies" with titles like "Shifting dominance: cultural transposition and the dislocation of pre-transgender libido in post-ironic relational narratives."

My thoughts are .....you can't have a gay character without causing every reader to now think about SEX. The innocence will be gone. Archie comics will never be the same. Archie was somehow similar to Gilligans Island

I agree that this move by Archie is likely a blip that may get them some publicity but will eventually fade away. I also agree that having a gay character is interesting, but parents should be forewarned or know about it if they don't want their kids reading about a gay character.

 

If Archie Comics really wanted to improve their sales, maybe they should focus on better art and stories. Modern Archies look terrible, like the artist drew it with the pencil in his nose. If anything will be the death of the Archie line, it will be the poor quality material they're producing nowadays.
