Johnny545
OK, here's the original Space Patrol cover art submitted to Centaur by ...Basil Wolverton! Unfortunately, Wolverton lived in California while his publisher was in NYC. Apparently Centaur's editors preferred in house cover submissions because it made it easier getting revisions on tight deadlines, so none of Basil's covers were accepted. Since he submitted finished pieces rather than pencil layouts it's that much more of a tragic loss for fans of Wolverton's unique style of art. We can only imagine what Basil's color covers might've looked like if Centaur had been more open to publishing his unsolicited cover work, then again... I'll post the second Wolverton cover art submission along with Ryan's brilliant recreation proof tomorrow. Enjoy! (thumbs u Brilliant, where are you finding the cover submissions - Creeping Death from Neptune? I don't remember seeing them in there? Again, just brilliant stuff. TheEyeSees
Thanks everyone. Cat's brainchild of having these cover submissions completed was an idea I was very into. I greatly enjoyed stepping into Wolverton's LARGE, noodle-y shoes for a time. Mr. Heshka will be appearing live at Vancouver Comic Show (BC, Canada) Oct. 25/15 Sunday. Info here for a 100 table local comicon: Heshka in Vancouver, BC. This is true, and I hope to see all you local geeks out there. I'll be selling children's books, prints, perhaps some original art, and it will be the unofficial local release of my first published comic book, "Mean Girls Club", published by Nobrow (UK). Thanks again Cat!!
Cat-Man_America
Thanks guys, and BIG thanks to Ryan. I'm very pleased with these recreations. Here's my IPad shot. This provides a good feel for the subtle color variation, depth of field and painterly look of the piece, but my IPad camera doesn't have as much detail clarity as the proof scan... Next up, Ryan's second AMF recreation. Hold onto your hats fellow geeksters, he doesn't monkey around when it comes to aping Wolverton's style. Dr. Love
Inspired color choices, gentlemen, given that it was truly a blank slate. I particularly liked the liquid nature of the floor and the reflections it cast, as well as the effective use of shadows for the creatures. Including little reflective glints in all the eyes, not just the black ones. And including the text, which I think was important. Red outfit! It's the big things, and the little details. Great choices by Cat and Ryan, fantastic execution as usual from the homage master! 1950's war comics
Pat Calhoun
Wolverton-Heshka’s a joy to behold; The Space Patrol cover is pure gold. And the most wonderful color choices Have earned the praise of many voices.
Cat-Man_America
Another unsolicited cover illustration from Basil that the editors at Centaur failed to use... Hang on, folks! Here's Ryan's stunning full color recreation of it...

Cat-Man_America
Thanks, Rich. Here's the IPad shot ... My goal is to get these professionally framed in the next couple of weeks. As with the earlier shot, the IPad photo conveys the painterly depth and subtlety of color a tad better than the scanned image, but lacks the fine detail that the scan captures. Depending upon how long it takes for framing I may bring one or both to the OAFcon for wall display. I suspect they'll be great conversation pieces.
