PGM Action Comics #23

41 posts in this topic

just reading the word "suspect" when it comes to this comic makes me sick. The other two I posted, I could care less about. This one matters to me. I'm going to call Matt in a few hours to see what he thinks. Ah well, fingers crossed I guess.
I apologize that you have to hear bad news... as mentioned, action 23 is one of my FAVORITE GA comics...I have bought and sold some 12+ copies in the last 2 years alone... I love the book so I know the value it has to a collector!

assuming it is trimmed (and from the scans it unfortunately appears to be), don't let that diminish your enjoyment of the book... the only time you need to worry about value or grade is if you are planning to sell it!

if you have had this book for 15-20 and enjoyed it all this time, don't lose that feeling (thumbs u

I planned on having it CGC rated and put into the hard case. If it is trimmed what am I looking at for a grade? Are we talking like a 2? Cause if so, I have some real nice steaks I plan on BBQing up tonight, I think I may have just found my new lighting device.

if you are planning on sending it into cgc, send it on in...nothing matt can do that cgc can't, confirming trimming wise... of course, matt could leaf cast some paper where the cover was trimmed, but then you get an extensive book

also, look on the right hand edge near the womans left hand...is that a tear seal? again, hard to tell from scan, but should be easily identified with book in hand..

hard to tell, but my guess is purple label in the 6.0 to 7.0 range... still has to be worth way more than you would have paid for it 15-20 years ago!

Not sure why you need to call Matt, if it's just to confirm what we've been discussing (no offense). The color touch is obvious and I can't see any doubt that the cover edges are trimmed. In the large scans, the top and bottom are quite uneven/wavy. :(

To be honest, I've been curious about this route (leaf-casting missing trimmed material) for a while now. Has anyone tried it? Does CGC omit the 'trimmed' notation from the label if the missing material 'appears' to be there? I assume the expense wouldn't make it worthwhile for the average book, but it's an interesting train of thought.

7 or better makes me feel good. I can eat the chicken wings I've been staring at for the last 20 minutes now, thanks.

If it matters, we paid $2100 I think about 15-20 year a go.

OK, I feel a little better now.

God Damn comics, I haven't thought about these things for 10 years and now I'm hitting the refresh button like it's medication.

My Pop started selling off all his old Mantle rookies and other insane cards and he told me to take a crack at seeing what kind of dough we are looking at when it comes to the comics we have. I started seeing all this Classics and CGC ratings and trimming and send this there and this one here, chipping, restored, etc. and it's making my brain hurt.

Thank goodness for you guys! At least I'm learning.

You remember when you tried to corner the market? I believe you had 6 or 8 at one time. What did I pay for my 4.5? 3K?

Keep in mind that a water wash can shrink a cover. It's not a certainty that it's trimmed, but it is probable.
The fiber exposure and ink loss coupled with uneven cut is indicative of trimming versus cover resizing in this case (thumbs u

I would bet money there's restoration at all four corners of the FC as well as along the spine and right edge of the FC :(

Yes +1, you can clearly see it...there are seals or a lot of CT filled in on this one...

It's still an awesome comic that has some nice value...

Probably a 6.0 with restoration as discussed above. Pity what people did to these books, even back in the day. Still a great book, but surely not what you thought you were getting.
