Comic book dealer...crappy attitude

153 posts in this topic

I ordered some books from a dealer. Total was around $1000. I've ordered from them for about 4 years. The most expensive book on the list was not included, and I wasn't charged for it. No big deal as I wasn't charged, so I called said dealer and asked them what happened.

Dealer: "Didn't you receive an call on this? The book has already been sold".

Me: "No, I hadn't received any calls or emails. Are you sure you called and didn't send out an email"?

Dealer: "I'm sure I sent out an email then".

Me: "Ok, that's fine. Do me a favor then, and check your sent items and forward a copy of what you sent, as I never received anything".

Dealer: Attitude quickly changing to grouchy "What does it matter anyway? We don't have the book, and whether or not I find the notification won't change the fact that you won't be getting the book".

Me: "It's not that it matters whether or not I'm getting the book at this point; I have 2 other copies anyway. You've basically told me twice that you're sure someone from your company notified me that the book was unavailable. I'd just like some verification of this".

Dealer: "What does it matter anyway? The book's already been sold, and you're not getting it".

Me: This is a matter of principle and customer service. Don't forget, I AM the customer here - you're basically calling me a liar when I tell you no one notified me that the book was unavailable.

How horrible is that? If you owned a comic book shop, would you treat your customers that way? I know I wouldn't. For some unknown reason he must've thought I was upset about not getting the book; I was much more upset by him arguing with me that I was notified to that effect when I KNEW I hadn't been.

comiclink was notrious for leaving comic listings on their site even after they were sold. i haven't dealt with them in recent years, and can't speak about their new site. i don't think it takes much to place the words "sold" beside the listing if your too lazy to remove the book altogether. confused-smiley-013.gif

To add insult to injury, the "REP" I spoke with on the phone sent me an email with my "modified" order, that DOES NOT show the missing $400 book. Then, he told me to speak with the president in the future if I don't like his customer service skills.

Can you guys believe this?

If you're posting this because you want sympathy, you've got it. That sucks. Good customer service can make a bad situation better, but bad customer service can turn even a good situation bad.

Now if you've posted this as a warning then we need a name, or it's worthless info.

Doesn't seem like a very good attitude to have towards a buyer of $1000 orders...

This is the attitude most national dealers have unless you're spending tens of thousands of dollars with them. The amount of profit they must make on a $1000 sale doesn't seem to matter to many of them, with a few notable exceptions.

Name please?

If people named names...their attitudes would get even CRAPPIER! shocked.gifblush.gif Remember, for most vintage titles, there are more collectors than available copies, so on many issues, it's a seller's market!

If it's Metro, they seem to care what people say. Vincent was on here not too long ago apologizing for the fact that a customer was unhappy with some aspect of the customer service that someone at Metro gave. I'm not saying that this sort of thing doesn't happen with unbelieveable regularity with many comic dealers (who seem to be a surly lot as a general proposition, with notable exceptions), but the guys at Metro seem to care about how they are perceived by their customers.

What I would do if I were Shield is give a call to the "President" as the customer service guy suggested and discuss the situation.

I don't think you have the right to treat anyone with rudeness. I treat potential buys of $10 the same as I would for $1,000. Because we're human beings and SHOULD treat each other with respect. Bad customer service service can spread like wildfire and how many in here would/could have bought thousands but now won't.

I know, FF, that maybe you are pointing out a reality for most of the comic book industry, but it just sucks.

The bad thing is the rep has a bad attitude and the prez probably has a good attitude (just spec, don't jump all over me!).
