Timely
As I mentioned in the past, I have been keeping track of the San Francisco books since 1991. Any sale of a book, listing of a book or collector who told me he had a specific issue I have cataloged. So, below is a list of all the San Francisco Copies I have tracked over the last 21 years. That list consists of only 250 books. I am sure many more must exist that I do not know of, but here is the list none-the-less. If anyone can confirm the existance of any San Francisco's not on this list please send me a PM or list them in this thread so I can add them to the list. Thanks! telerites
Thanks for posting the list There's got to be more Nationals floating around out there. When I bought the #28 years ago on Ebay, the seller didn't identify it as the SF and I didn't realize it for some time after that. Some keen-eyed boardie noticed the stamp (well-hidden on the back cover) when I posted the book.
detective35
Hi West, I was at the San Diego Con a few years back, when an guy brought a killer copy of Action Comics #23..the San Franscisco copy. Steve F. (one of the last years he attended) looked at it, showed it to me (at that time I had 8 Frisco Flash (Hawkman covers)), so I looked at it carefully and it had either the code or the Reilly stamp (or both), and the blazing white pages. Steve offered the guy a very fair price, but the guy decided to keep it. I was shocked because it was one of the earliest Frisco's that I had even seen and a killer one to boot. There are more out there, because I have had a couple of prominent collectors say that they had seen the Flash 9 and USA 7 Frisco's. nearmint
West, assuming that the Tom Reilly story is true, have you compared the condition of the pre-war books that Tom presumably would have bought himself, to the war years books that his parents would have purchased for him, and may have remained unread? The 3 Superman books are a good example. The pre-war issues, #4 and #11, are 7.5 and 8.0(perhaps read and handled repeatedly by Tom), while the war era #18 is an amazing 9.6. I'm curious if other titles show the same appropriate disparity in grading.

detective35
There was a time when I was doing some in depth searching on the history of the San Francisco's, the first owners, and the grades of them from Riley's pre-war involvement and the ones while he was in the war. It definately seems like the ones from the collection when he was in the war were on a whole, much sharper across the board. Dwight

Most of the time the SF books from 1942-1945 are 9.2 - 9.8 and look untouched while the books from 1940-1941 are 7.5 - 9.2 and have handling wear. However, due to the collection being an early find with odd disbursement, many SF books received additional damage. In fact, one of the SF Star Spangled Comics found its way into a baseball card store and got damaged... and this was less than 10 years ago! detective35
The Flash #23 was late 1941 and when I had it graded was a 9.4, the 29 was a 9.0, but the real jump came from #33 (9.6) on, where most of mine were (9.4-9.8). As the collection was brought to the market in 1/3rds., the last 1/3rd of it was again split three ways with one partner moving to Minneapolis (Bob Selveg I believe), starting a video rental store, and selling many of the books locally. Thus a number of SF's surfaced at the Chicago Comicon over a number of years in the late 1990's, early 2000's when certain dealers in the area started bringing the books to Chicago. I picked up 5 SF Flashes, one Detective and a number of Sensations from a dealer over a few years. Dwight

sacentaur
Also, I'd check with John Verzyl and see if he'll talk. When I bought my house 20 years ago, I sold him two Frisco More Funs in the 70's range (I can't recall the exact numbers), books I had bought from Gary Carter in the mid-80's. Great list West, keep up the good work.

detective35
Yeah, I had a supposed "Indian Reservation" copy of Flash 19 that miraculously had some color touch. I bought it right from Gary Carter who bought it "right from the reservation". Incidentially Gary didn't tell that the Chief must have been sitting around one afternoon, just bored, and had nothing better to do than color touch the Flash!!
