Along with ALL WINNERS #4 I plan to submit COMIC CAVALCADE #12.

This Fall Issue from 1945 was the first 15 cent comic I ever purchased.

There is a great ad in it for the "Hop Harrigan All-American Flying Club"

that includes a membership card, sew-on emblem, U.S. Army stickers,

genuine baggage labels (from big commercial airways) and a privilege

card that entitles you to belong to the American Observation Corps. all

for only 10-cents.

Planning ahead...after the above have been graded I plan to

send in my CAPTAIN MARVEL ADVENTURES #54 from

February 1946. This was during the period when Fawcett was

publishing this Comic every other Friday and boasted "Largest

Circulation Of Any Comic Magazine." right on the cover.

Number 54 has "68 pages in Full Color!" ( 64 pages plus covers).

It also features the story of Radio Station WHIZ going into TV.

This book also has very thick, heavy covers which keep it flat.

I have quite a few CAPTAIN MARVEL ADVENTURES because

my parents gave me a subscription to it for Christmas along with

one to LOONEY TUNES & MERRIE MELODIES.

Those are good choices for submission. I wouldn't send in the Captain Marvel issues because they usually sell less than guide in any condition except for single digits and below 20 Whiz. A few of the nicer war covers will still sell at guide.

I stopped in '54 when I went into the Navy and picked-up again

in the 70's when my sons became interested in what I had packed

away in boxes.

How long did it take before you realized that your old comics had value? E.g., did your sons know about comic collecting in the formal sense (the Price Guide, stores, conventions, etc.) or was that a later discovery? I imagine it was pretty neat to discover your childhood comics were valuable.

We went to a local Comic Book Show and were surprised to see all the

long boxes filled with comic books in plastic bags and even more surprised

to see how much they were getting for them.

One dealer suggested we buy a copy of "The Comic Book Price Guide",

which we did for $7.50...issue #6 from 1977 with The Spirit on the cover.

We went home and began making a list of what I had in the boxes.

mm

I just took a look at the #6 Price Guide and it lists ACTION #1 in mint

condition valued at $4,200.00...a lot of money then!

I like collecting the old price guides but they do not relate to current prices. You need a more recent issue. :makepoint:

FLASH COMICS #97 & FOUR-COLOR #159 still in "Verified".

As I go about selecting what to have graded it becomes more and

more of a challenge to decide which books should be next.

I'm trying to select those that were my favorites over the years and

I keep finding there were more "favorites" than I thought...like SPIRIT #2

"Crime Doesn't Pay" and PLASTIC MAN #2 "The Gay Nineties Nightmare"

or FOUR-COLOR #105 "ALBERT THE ALLIGATOR & POGO POSSUM".

Whatever I do, it sure is a lot of fun going through my books...I keep finding

ones I had forgotten.

While waiting for the above to be graded before sending in my

next group of two, I read an article in the November issue of

Comics Buyer's Guide by Michelle Nolan "The Great

Golden Age Transition". It talks about PEP #60 being the last

Golden Age Adventure of The BLACK HOOD and the beginning

run of KATY KEENE.

What it didn't mention is that my name appears inside the front

cover as a contest winner of a FREE COPY OF PEP COMICS...

I received issue #62.

+1 Very cool!

:gossip: (and I'm sure it was just an oversight on Michelle's part)

Still no grades...should see them next week.

While going through my collection I ran across my copies of Briefer's

FRANKENSTEIN, #'s 1 through #6. I always thought this was a very amusing

comic character. Doesn't seem to be much interest in it nowadays.
