Frankenstein Agent of SHIELD #12,13 & 0 - A pity that this very good Monster Squad book has been shelved in favour of what DC currently puts out. Frank's origin is explored and the Rotworld hits! Excellent entertainment.

Continuing with my re-reading of Slott's run:

 

ASM 682-687

 

This was pretty much all of Ends of the Earth. As I've found with most of Slott's run, I enjoyed this more. At the same time, as I found with Spider Island, it still felt like it was missing something. I feel like Slott's big arcs were just lacking. The Avengers getting turned into Ock Zombies just felt so cheap.

 

I liked the line drops for Dying Wish and Superior though. Slott really dropped the seeds early for his big event, especially if it really started back during 600.

I'm moving a little slower then I thought, but considering January isn't over yet I see no reason to race through this. I don't want it to feel like a chore.

 

I bought a lot of Fables over in the Marketplace a few days ago. I picked up where my trades left off.

 

Fables 48-53

 

I am loving this book. I used to pick up the trades whenever Barnes and Noble was having some sale. They had a buy 2 get 1 free on DC stuff awhile back and I got a few.

 

The homeland or whatever they call it is preparing an attack. Bigby is back which is nice to see as he's one of the better characters. I also like what they are doing with Cinderella. All in all this is a blast.

 

It is also cool to see the covers. They might be some of the best covers in the business. They aren't flashy or anything, but just solid covers.

 

I also picked up my new books. I've read through most of them. I have a few more to go. Here is what I've read thus far:

Out of the pile, probably enjoyed the new Batman the most. Snyder is rocking it.

 

As a Spidey fan, not sure how I feel about Superior. I'd also add that I think Avenging might be the stronger title.

This is a pretty solid self contained story. Kind of touching. I thought I had from 150 to present but realized I was missing two issues. Once I fill those in I'll be reading from 154-200 of ASM.

Talon #0, 2 – This very entertaining and well written title continues to gather pace. I think Scott Snyder has captured the spirit of the late 90s Nightwing series and presented it here. Costume is still a little lame, almost a cheap version of Azrael but I am warming to it. The story and the -script more then makes up for it.

The Vault #1-3… An entertaining B movie style story. The art is very clean and looks great, especially the set pieces. Well written -script and a slight new twist on the “look what we found underwater” type of story. I could see this being made into a movie that would appear on the SyFy channel.

Working thru my DCBS monthly shipment

 

Saga TPB Vol 1 (6 issues): I had the first few issues read in singles and then decided to wait for the trade once I knew I liked it. The rest of the read was just as good. I know some people are like "whats the big deal" (shrug) but I really enjoy the book. BKV is creating an interesting divers sci-fi/fantasy universe to play in. Some read it like Romeo & Juliet, but to me it resonates more with the trials and tribulations of being a new parent and all the struggles that come with that little bundle of joy.

 

Elephantmen TPB Vol 1 (8 issues): holy there is a ton of back matter, support material to this book and its all crazy fun. Richard Starking and his rotating band of tallented artists create a great sci-fi universe where genetically mutated animals live among people. Eithical questions ensue, and Starking does a great job looking a wide range of social issues from the slant of this "second class citizen" culture. Already half way thru the second volume too...

Batman Legends of the Dark Knight #1 ... The new series kicks off and unlike its predecessor its a collection of short stories in the one issue. I think this is quite challenging for the writers to only have a few pages to tell a captivating or interesting story. The first issue nails it though, 3 very different tales of Batman. I hope it continues.

 

Robocop: Road Trip #2-3 ... continuing on from the not so interesting first issue and it really doesn't get much better. I really don't care for the story. Its supposed to happen directly after the first movie, to be honest I prefer the story from Robocop 2 to this!

All New X-Men #6. A joy to read.

 

Avenging Spider-Man #16. A surprisingly decent story.

 

Captain America #3. Terrible art meets terrible story.

 

Indestructible Hulk #3. Gamma themed Bond style antics – pretty green.

 

New Avengers #2. Crisis on infinite earths.

 

Savage Wolverine #1. With Shanna the She-Devil – what’s not to like.

 

Daredevil #22. An unfortunate appearance from the new Spider-Man.

 

Venom #30. Not even an appearance from the wondrous Valkyrie can save this issue from being mediocre.

 

Ultimate Iron Man #4. Tedious.
