returned book, seller says 2 inch rip, but book between cardboard!

I'm sorry, but is you're shipping between flimsy priority box cardboard in a bubble envelope, you've lost me on this one.

yes I can see a smashed book, but a 2 inch rip through two layers of cardboard? Thats not likely

You lost all credibility with me with the shipping technique. Save our collectables and quit the hobby now.

Besides, it was 1 layer of cardboard.

And a grading guide can help show you the difference between a 4" crease

and a large missing chunk.

It can be a confusing hobby, I know.

ah....so you are the one that have been outbidding me for years with JS lol
winning on JS is a seasonal affair. I usually can't touch their books because of the insane bidding. But if you put in enough low-ball bids, you'll score every once in awhile.

I may be in the minority but I have to sympathesize with the buyer here. I've dealt with some pretty weird ebayer/dealers. To cover my myself, I ship an item back better than it was sent or in the exact same packaging.

This one particular dealer on eBay that made me fume did exactly what this buyer is complaining about in order to refute sending a refund. Now I take pictures before sending back an item if it is worth my while.

I don't take too much stock in the cardboard packaging discussion because I've had people send me comics with some bizarre packaging strategy and managed to give me the items in near mint condition (sometimes in excess of 75+ comics in one shipment), and others have trouble sending one intact.

I think paypal will help you but stay away from ebayers that give you any doubts.

I'm sure the OP appreciates the bit of sympathy, as there hasn't been much here. This thread would serve as a good example of why one shouldn't post up every little bit of misfortune you suffer on eBay. As a friend of mine use to say, if you are looking for sympathy try the dictionary. It's there somewhere between sh*t and syphillis.

I always package in a sturdy box, so that won't ever be a problem for me. But I've returned a few items - including items where the seller was trying to pull a fast one and I had to resort to a buyer protection case - and I have on occasion wondered if the seller would claim the item returned wasn't the same or was damaged. I take pictues or do a scan of the items in question - but as others have pointed out that doesn't really prove anything.

It is, as someone else said, another reason not to buy raw on ebay. Raw comics are best purchase in person, from established dealers or boardies here with good reputations.

I never buy when I see "1st Class Shipping". I know I would be getting just what's in the video, so the shipper could keep it under the weight limit.

1st Class Shipping gets an immediate back click from me.

interesting tip (thumbs u

Something smells fishy, and the wind is coming from your direction.

When starting a thread like this, why would you not immediately state the reason for returning the book in the first place? A normal thread starter on this forum would.

You did not insure it when you returned it? The label being provided by Ebay is no excuse. Insurance is separate from the label. The post office puts a second and different lable on the package for insurance.

Why on earth would you video your packaging the book? Did you know there was going to be a rip controversy? hmmm....

If you are that paranoid, why did you not video the opening of the package when it arrived to you, from the Ebay seller?

All smell fishy. Not saying this happened, but buying a blurry ebay item, then returning the item for an unknown reason and videoing your packaging of it. Smacks of trying to exchange a second ripped copy, for the sellers unripped copy.

No accusation, Just saying how it sounds and looks. It happens. What is the sellers feedback rating? Did you take a chance, or is this his/her M.O.?

Ah, the good'ol CGC boards.....

meh. He first said the seller sent him a VF/NM- book with a large missing chunk on the top right front (no such damage shown in his video), and about 2 minutes later edited the post saying it was a 4 inch crease.

An important question - asked once already - is how was the book packaged when shipped to the buyer? If the buyer was returning it the same way it was shipped to him/her, then criticisim of the return packaging is a unfair.

A tear seems unlikely from shipping between thin cardboard. Bends and folds yes.

Shipping in a sturdy box that is an inch or two larger in all directions filled with cushioning material all around so the book never touches the box is the standard for shipping nearly anything. And how I ship. But I've bought books from well known boardies that arrived in envelopes between cardboard. I've bought more books than I can count that were shipped that way from eBay sellers. 98% of the time the books arrive in good shape with no visible damage. Then there is that other 2% of the time.

I don't know the answer to the OP's original question - which is an interesting one. The buyer returned and overgraded book to the seller. The seller claims it was received not in the condition sent. It appears that Paypal normally favors the buyers, but some sellers here speak of "winning" contested returns.

Hopefully the OP will post up what the resolution is when it is settled.

I normally ship everything Priority Mail in a Box, but ebay automatically prints out a 1st class return label for returns. I was suspicious of this seller because of the overgrading and blurry photos, so I wanted to use the exact ebay label ebay wanted in case of a dispute. This was a 1st class label. And because I've had 98% of things shipped to me in an envelope between cardboard come perfect I wasnt worried about it. Plus this book was in Fine + condition anyway, there was no way to hurt the book except with a bend or fold, which I know is unlikely because 98% of stuff gets shipped like this to me just fine.

Ebay's label didnt have the option for insurance either, it was just a preprinted label from ebay covering everything. I would think ebay would include insurance if they also require a signature on ebay's own preprinted label?

Again, the main point is it is highly unlikely the book got ripped between two pieces of cardboard. I can see a bend, but not a rip. So I think this guy is just shady.

no I dont have a different user name!
