What are your collecting goals for 2014?

148 posts in this topic

In 2014 I'd like to:

  • Find a nice PREACHER page (Who am I kidding, I'll take any page) :gossip:
  • Get a nice Ben Tolman piece. He's not a "comic artist", but I dig his stuff <3
  • Go through the collection and sell some pieces I may be able to live without ???
  • Sell more art for the artists I work with :wishluck:
  • SPread the word that the Comic Art Escrow service is in full effect and quit reading horror stories from fellow collectors :flamed:

I've no doubt I'll be able to keep the 2014 budget under the 2013 budget. This year I found a small cache of 48 pages that I was able to make a deal on. I don't think 2014 will be as lucky :boo:

Just made a deal for TWO pieces by Ben Tolman

The first of many I hope :wishluck:

Try to stick to quality over quantity if I make <5 purchases next year I think i'll have stuck to that.

Too often I get the shiny quarter syndrome... I feel like I was much better in 2013, but I am hoping I am even better next year. I think last year I still wound up purchasing close to 40 pages.

So far so good for me. Just got my 1st OA purchase of the year.

A nice 6 panel page by Frank Quitely. The only issue of the invisibles he did!

New in today, Kev Walker's Magic the Gathering trading card artwork for Energy Chamber . . .

And how it looks on the card:

My collecting goals for this year now completed (with the un-planned for bonus of a nice Volkan Baga painting). I'm sure there'll be other additions along the way.

My goals for 2014:

1. A nice example with Everett pencils and inks or at least inks

2. A nice Wally Wood interior page

3. Frank Brunner with crusty inks Doc Strange

4. Frank Miller Wolverine mini

5. More David Finch if its reasonably priced

6. Only buy if its on the 1-5 list

this will be a lot easier said than done

Well I have added 2 Finch Avengers DPS at a fair value and now I have got my page with everett inks. Not a bad start to the year!

For me, it'll definitely be a more subdued year in 2014 with so much of my want list demolished in 2013. A great Jack Kirby/Joe Sinnott FF example remains at the top of my remaining want list, and I wouldn't mind adding another Buscema SS page either. There are also two specific covers I'm targeting as well. If I can get those 4 items, that'll pretty much take care of my "core collection" want list and I'll just be buying opportunistically (targeting mostly specific high nostalgia items) going forward.

What are your goals for the new year?

As we near the end of the year, how have people fared with their collecting goals?

I got 2 out of the 4 pieces I alluded to above. And more. Much, much more. This has not been a good year for budgetary discipline, I'm afraid, despite my best efforts - I only post very occasionally to CAF nowadays to disguise the extent of my horrible OA addiction.

2013 has been another good year for me as for 2014 looking for

1. Batman Sprang page

2. Little Annie Fanny page by Will Elder

3. Don Martin Captain Klutz

4. Ditko Creeper - Done

5. Romita Spider-Man newspaper strip

There is also a cover I have been actively trying to acquire from the owner. 2014 may be the year I get it

Only one month into the year and I can cross one off the list, Ditko Creeper page.

Beware The Creeper #4 page 19

Beware_the-Creeper_4_19.jpg

Only one piece off that list but its been another great year. I have filled a number of holes in my collection from Mignola "Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom: Triumph and Torment" to Ploog "The Thing" storyboards and concept art.

Highlight is the "How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way". I NEVER thought I would find a page from the book and getting the whole book is mind blowing. The Mt Everest for a John Buscema fan.

I almost never set goals, for 2 main reasons:

1. I know what I like when I see it

2. Setting a goal might result in me overpaying just to be able to tick a checkbox.

But every year for the past few years I am shocked by how well (and how expensive) my collection has grown, and this year is no exception. The highlights are:

1. BWS Weapon X Cover!

2. Mazz DD half splash!

and a few more I am purposely not mentioning :)

I hope 2015 is even better, but my wallet won't like it.

Hopefully, this coming year will close on:

(in historical order)

1) Bat/Tec splash page by Don Newton [happily taking PMs on this one!]

2) receiving an iconic painted cover from late '80s, shipping in January

3) an early YTLM page w/ Ampersand

4) an interior page from Locke & Key

5) Star Wars cover from Hugh Fleming

6) splash page from The Wake

...along with a valiant attempt to finish out my high-grade Batman #201-300 set.

Here is the update:

1) Bat/Tec splash page by Don Newton -- Added a whole bunch of Newton Bats, but no splash pages...should have more discipline going forward.

2) receiving an iconic painted cover from late '80s -- got my Green Arrow Longbow Hunters #2 cover by Mike Grell

3) an early YTLM page w/ Ampersand - sold all my Y pages, and bought back the same amount but different early pages. I feel like I upgraded.

4) an interior page from Locke & Key - added a bunch of covers, but still no interiors.

5) Star Wars cover from Hugh Fleming - Nope, but with the move from Dark Horse to Marvel, the inability to get this might have been a blessing.

6) splash page from The Wake -- geez, I think I might have bought nearly all the splash pages from The Wake.

...along with a valiant attempt to finish out my high-grade Batman #201-300 set. -- and then I sold all my Batman CGC books...focus on OA instead.

1) A Criminal page or two would be great. One of the rare splash pages even better.

2) Definitely will hunt HeroesCon again as I always do every year with a buddy. We usually find a deal or two and its our only chance once a year to get together and peruse art and talk comics in person. Won't spend silly money, but always try to get a piece or two to remember each show by.

3) A nostalgia page for me (Knightfall, Jurgens Superman, Kolins Flash, etc) would be a nice addition.

4) Maybe another page or cover from Mind MGMT or some of the other creator-owned work I'm really enjoying.

I knocked out three out of the four, and went in some directions I didn't completely expect. Got a couple nice Ryan FF pages to sate my 90's nostalgia, scored a nice Mind MGMT panel page at HeroesCon from Matt Kindt. All in all a banner year.

I would be completely happy acquiring only one piece on my signature line. I would be especially happy if it were the Detective 590 cover. Other than that, in no particular order,

1. Kirby pre-code monster splash from any of the Marvel titles

2. A twice-up superhero splash

3. This Daredevil splash

None of my goals were met :sorry:

Another reason why I don't set OA goals. You could get great art during the year and still be unhappy!

As always, my wish list is wildly unrealistic every year. With that said I did get a Winsor McCay, so the year was a win for me. I also got a Dr Strange Flight of Bones page by Tony Harris this week, just in time to meet the year's goal. Oddly enough I wanted more BWS and sold 3 pages instead; then I bought a different one to comfort myself. And I wanted a Starman cover and sold two, along with about 20-30 Starman pages. but bought an awesome tony harris Starman pinup. And a few of the things I got that were not on my want list are fairly awesome.

More importantly, until this spending spasm of the last two weeks, I bought far fewer pieces than in past years and bought of higher quality.

Life is good in the OA hobby for me, for even as my collection dwindles in size it shines brighter and brighter in my life.

Next year I WILL get art produced by one of the following: Alex Raymond (I have my eye on one already in fact), Hal Foster, or Moebius. I also have a real specific goal for comic art con in March.
