I spy...

...Alice Kelley

hm

Hey, it's another "Reform School Girl" comic!

I don't see Alice Kelley here though... Haircut is Bettie Page... Face is....not Alice Kelley., in my view. (The other one's an artist's portait -- hard to tell, but she does have the dimples.) Great stuff anyway.

We need Dukedog's opinion. hm

I believe this cover actually came under discussion, back when we were collectively evaluating possible Alice Kelley covers. I seem to remember most of us deciding it isn't her. I personally don't think it's her.

I doubt I added this cover to my Alice Kelley photobucket album... but, hey, let's take another look...

Edit: The Vargas painting is a famous session- definitely Miss Kelley.

Oh, I see now we did add an issue of Complete Love with the same girl on the cover.

Oh, well... I believe there are still quite a few covers in that album that don't really belong there. I haven't worked on editing it for a long time.

In the late '40's through the mid '50's, Alice Kelley appeared on countless magazine and comic covers. She also had roles in just over a dozen films, but most of those were just bit parts in smaller, obscure films. Perhaps her biggest and best known film was "Against All Flags" (1952). Given the relatively limited sphere of her career, it really is amazing the degree of popularity she ultimately achieved.

My collection of romance books is pretty small, I tend to gravitate towards books with cool covers and stories that are also affordable. Fortunately I was able to pick both of these up in the last year, one on the boards and one on ebay. I'm keeping my eye out for more of this title, especially the black covers. I sold my #23 a while back, but it looks like an easy one to replace due to a warehouse find.

True Love 14 not only has a fantastic cover, but stories about tattoos, murder, potential incest and drug dealing.

The"escort" story in issue 12 is a bit tame, but the cover is a classic.

For the longest time I never thought I'd start collecting Charlton, but I recently bought this one... and there are several others I'll probably pick up when I find them.

Love the True Life Secrets run - especially the black Cappello coves. #14 is one of the all time greats - flying cars are the bomb. #12 has simple and effective design elements, so well executed.

The nice thing about going for pre-code Charlton romance is its limited scope. Obtainable, but a challenge, depending on grade requirements. 29 line drawn covers.

That Romantic Story #25 is another one I'd go for. Great, great cover.

Andy, approximately how many Charlton romance covers by Winik and Osrin are there? They seem to be among some of my favorites.

Here is another scarce Charlton romance. One of only just a few GA comics picturing a black woman on the cover

Huh! That's pretty cool. And certainly a cheaper pickup than a Negro Romances. hm

Is there a story that corresponds with the cover in any way?

My guess is that the black woman is meant to be a maid rather than a romantic rival of the white woman. Still, it's interesting that she was included on the cover.
