Amazing Spider-Man 2 is heavily succeeding due to the international market, though its Domestic box office is coming close to breaking $200 MM. ASM 2 is getting close to 700 million worldwide box office and close to passing Captain America: Winter Soldier to become the 2014 world wide leader at the box office. Is it possible returning actors were paid for services not yet rendered for installments down the road that aren't properly recorded in the budget? I remember Robert Wuhl was paid $750,000 to "possibly" play Knox again in the proposed Bat sequel in '89. Basinger too, she was in the original Batman Returns -script. Nicolas Cage got big $$$ for a pay or play deal for Superman Lives deal in '98 too. Possibly some of the actors settled for a portion of the gross though. Even the international results were strong. But what ASM2 shows is there is a massive international market for this character. Even with a heavily mixed review, it has done over $500 MM. Imagine if the -script was such it hit on the common expectation of a Spider-Man story and was delivered at Raimi casting-level. This could have been massive. Sony needs to really play it's next release wisely or it will be at a point cinema attendees may assume it just can't return back to the old magic. Bosco685 Posted June 20, 2014 Author Share Posted June 20, 2014 These are Wednesday's numbers, yet X-Men: DoFP had already gone up over $4 MM worldwide by its 27th day of release. On the other hand, it looks like ASM2 is winding down as it has gone up around $350 K worldwide by its 48th day of release. ASM2 definitely succeeded across the international market, while domestically it has not been able to break $200 MM (the lowest domestic results for the franchise). X-Men: DoFP is catching up with The Wolverine's profit ratio, and should exceed it after this weekend once Thursday through Sunday is tallied. The tradeoff of domestic versus international box office results is the largest ever, with the domestic results being the lowest of the franchise though it has easily surpassed $200 MM. Thanks to Slow Summer, 2014 Box Office Now Trails 2013 Through June 23rd, the 2014 domestic box office totals $4.96 billion, which lags a bit behind 2013's $4.99 billion. Over the remainder of the Summer, that gap is likely to widen, which will in turn decrease the odds that the full year tops 2013's record $10.9 billion haul. Of course, the rest of the lineup could have made up that difference. Unfortunately, Summer 2014 has been slower than expected. Through Monday, the Summer box office is at $1.79 billion, which is down 13 percent from last Summer's $2.07 billion haul. Only one movie—X-Men: Days of Future Past—has reached $200 million. In comparison, last Summer had four $200 million movies by now (Iron Man 3, Fast & Furious 6, Star Trek Into Darkness, Man of Steel). Unfortunately, the situation isn't going to improve much in the next few weeks. Over this past weekend, the Top 12 earned $138.8 million, which was off a massive 40 percent from the same weekend last year: Think Like a Man Too and Jersey Boys were no match for Monsters University and World War Z. Ultimately, July 2014 will almost certainly lag behind July 2013's $1.37 billion (the second-biggest month ever). Even with Guardians of the Galaxy and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, August may have a tough time matching last year's record $929 million. So what does this mean? At the start of Summer, the domestic box office was up nine percent year-over-year. By the end of the season, it will be trailing 2013 by at least two percent. Closing that gap isn't impossible, though it would require a record performance during the fourth quarter. Can Interstellar, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (along with many other would-be hits) get the job done? We'll see. Sony needs to rethink their plans for the franchise Well, Andrew Garfield did state ASM 3 will be his final Spider-Man movie. What I heard Venom and Green Goblin will be the bigger focus over the next few years. I could see a trilogy for Venom movies without Spider-Man.
