OK, I thought it would be a good pricey technicality for the chart. (thumbs u

I'll include the franchise, but note it as Malibu/Marvel acquisition. It will be interesting to see what numbers are there before any new MIB comes out.

Since it came up today about which Marvel movies had the largest/smallest box office drop.

Some surprises with the stronger movies experience some of these drops.

Finally!

Should Sony Panic About The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Box Office Sales?

Amazing Spider-Man 2 reportedly had a production budget of $255 million and a marketing budget of at least $180 million. That means Sony is looking at a small profit on the pic.

That means ASM2 did make money. It was just so small a profit it was an embarrassment to Sony compared to the previous Spider-Man movies.

So after another massive year for Marvel, it goes into 2016 having delivered over $9 billion total as a combined franchise.

I did notice even though Age of Ultron had been out of theaters for a while, it's international number had gone up slightly.

At least in 2016 I'll have some DC charts to play with finally.

Amazing!

No other Marvel movie has ever experienced that high a revenue return in all the years of successful releases. And Marvel has definitely had quite a few.

DC/Warner, on the other hand, has allowed for too many dogs which is most probably why people early on really had little confidence.

Updated the original post with the latest movie results, along with adjusting for 2016 inflation rates in the last column.

--------------------------

Since there have been so many posts about who should declare cinema victory over the past few years, maybe it is worth taking a look at the production run of both companies. It doesn't take deep analysis to identify Marvel as the solid quality leader at this time, though Warner is promising large growth over the coming years.

The 1978 to present period in DC and Marvel-based movies is comprised of 72 movies. Looking at all included movies as a whole, they had a budget of $8,212,000,000 leading to a worldwide box office revenue total of $27,034,477,687 using USD from their given year of release. If adjusted for 2016 inflation, the overall worldwide box office revenue total is $30,984,409,568.

Some movies had a very limited cinema release (Captain America from 1990 mainly appeared in UK theaters and a few other limited international markets), and three movies either were a total direct to video (DTV) release with one being a partial DTV. With the Wes Craven 'Swamp Thing' movie from 1982, it is very unclear what true budget and box office results were noted for the time. Some sites like IMDb mistakenly reference numbers from 'The Return of Swamp Thing' and cannot confirm the results.

Deadpool is still actively showing in theaters as of this update.

Note: Movie budget and box office results were taken from either Box Office Mojo, IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes or through researching interviews with creators that spoke to the final results (Roger Corman mentioning his total budget for 'The Fantastic Four' was one million dollars). In the case of 'The Fantastic Four' where Marvel purchased the movie for an additional few million dollars so as not to have it released to the public, this has not been included in the final analysis. %20really%3F%20Arad%22&f=false'>Los Angeles Magazine, March 2005

Anyone think comic book movies aren't big business?

A limited number of DC and Marvel movies have done 4X budget at the box office. Only two have ever achieved double-digit revenue.

Who would have ever assumed Deadpool would be one of those two?

Deadpool just passed up Iron Man II's adjusted USD Worldwide Box Office total, and has gone from #19 to #18 on the Top 20 list. And only in a day will it pass up Man of Steel.

Deadpool has now surpassed three Top 20 movies to claim the #17 spot.

:applause:

Give it a day and it will have surpassed Amazing Spider-Man 2, and within the week it should pass up Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

And when sorting by Revenue Ratio...

And down goes Guardians of the Galaxy after Friday's Domestic Box Office numbers were posted.

I did go back and run GotG's 2014 numbers through the inflation calculator to adjust for 2016.

2016 = $333,704,366.06

Even with that, Deadpool takes the next spot.

That's incredible.

Given how popular the GotG movie was (and how beloved it is on these boards, in particular) that a Deadpool movie can out-gross it on 1/3 of the budget blows my mind.

Ditto that it's outdone Iron Man and Iron Man 2. Comic book movies have come a long way since 2008!

Deadpool is only $13,045,015 away from matching X-Men: Days of Future Past. The last few X-Franchise movies did well in Japan.

- X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014): $9,983,199

- The Wolverine (2013): $7,991,915

- X-Men: First Class (2011): $7,791,919

- X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009): $9,303,728

If Deadpool keeps adding a few million each week before the Japan Box Office hits, and it matches the trend, it could be the top Fox X-Franchise movie.

Well, I guess we won't have to wait long to tell if Deadpool will surpass Days of Future Past.

It is all of $2,716,301 from matching its X-franchise peer, even when factoring in current dollars.

The movie juggernaut 'Deadpool' just continues on with box office growth, even before the June Japanese box office addition.

When comparing DC-Marvel top Domestic Box Office results, it is now #8 (not accounting for adjusted USD).

X9d2eN0.png

But when comparing to adjusted Worldwide Box Office, it is #15 and only $2.24 MM away to matching X-Men: Days of Future Past for the #14 spot.

I collected up the DC and Marvel Cinematic Universe weekly drop-off rates to see how Batman v Superman compares.

OkA2BWT.jpg

It will take a few weeks of data to see how this movie trends compared to other films. But it is interesting to see Man of Steel had the worst DCCU weekly drop-off rates for Weeks 3-7.

I also noticed of all the MCU movies, Thor has the best drop-off rate (least drop-off) three times, while the rest are average or one-time best.

As of Friday's closing, Deadpool is all of $1.22 MM from matching X-Men: Days of Future Past. And that's with a 2016 inflation USD adjustment.

I never saw that coming.
