Im still at :o with Tim Sale Long Halloween selling at 16K

Where did you think it would end up at? Under 10?

I thought I went in strong at $8,800 for a TPB cover, which I thought was reasonable because it has all the storyline characters in a line of 13 covers that are a mixed bag. But $16k...yikes. Two people obviously think much differently than I do.

I'm shocked by the ASM #141 cover result - between the vellum and Spidey's back turned, I would have guessed closer to half of the final price. The ASM #239 at $46,444 also exceeded my expectations by about 10%. The Conan #88 cover at $20,583 shocked me - nice cover, but I thought it would go for something more like $12K. Sienkiewicz Elektra: Assassin cover at $50K went at the high end of what I thought ($40-$50K).

Agree with you on the ASM 141. I don't mind the vellum at all, and the cast of villains is wonderful, but Spidey's back is turned to the viewer and for me, that detracts from the overall appeal.

Romita Jr ASM 239 cover...I would think this is the most $$$ paid for a Romita Jr cover in a public sale. I'm not certain if the ASM 238 cover would top it, but I prefer this one. I think this more than doubles the highest price paid for a Romita Jr X-Men cover in a public sale.

Conan 88 cover. At first I thought it was expensive, but Buscema art has been on a strong upswing for several years, and based on recent public sales for his other Conan covers and splashes from this era, I think this falls in line with those prices realized.

I say don't look at what the cover doesn't have (Spidey's face) but rather what it does have: great shots of EVERYone else.

If Spidey had not been present, that would have been a big problem. Shot of him with his back turned? Not so bad in this case. Not ideal, but not so bad considering everything else you get.

I went 2 for 3 last night on CL. I threw out 400 on the X-Men 252 page, went 560 which when i thought about it was probably fair. I was trying to steal it and didn't work out, oh well.

But I landed 2 pieces

Piece 1 got the Jim Lee Alpha Flight Marvel Universe page for 220 bucks. It looked cool and i don't want to drop 4 figures on an alpha page. I actually forgot about this bid, figured no way id land it for around 200, but huzzah. Thought it was a steal price, guess it fell through the cracks.

JimLeeAlphaFlight1.jpg

My big piece though was the Kelley Jones Red Rain Batman page. It was his best work, on one of the best Batman stories ever. And i always thought this was the single best page he did in the book. Im sort of surprised that it went for only 2k considering lesser pages sell for a ton. Probably the happiest art buy I've had in a while.

Gene, any real bargains in your opinion? Also, I would be very interested in your opinion of the hammer prices for the swamp thing page, the cap cover and the Spectacular Spider-Man Magazine splash. Thanks in advance.

I'm sure there were some bargains among the lower priced pieces, but none of the marquee pieces other than the Fables cover looked outright cheap to me. That Kirby Thor #258 cover resold for lower than it sold at Heritage in 2013 and that Kirby FF #90 page I mentioned sold for less than it sold at Heritage in 2008, though the final prices still looked within the range of FMV to me. The WD #19 page sold for less than I would have thought given where the two #19 pages sold on eBay within the last year and given the feeding frenzy over the better pages of late.

The people I talked to were thinking, call it, $18-$20K on that Swampy page, though I thought it would go closer to $15K given that it had traded hands a couple of times recently - at $16,752, I guess it was kind of in-between. The Cap cover at $16K I thought was strong for a Ron Wilson cover (even with Romita inks), but I've realized for a while now that Bronze Age covers with very strong images can fetch around $15K even when not drawn by one of the big money artists, so I don't think it was that crazy.

I wasn't following that Spectacular Spider-Man splash very closely - now that one does strike me at $12.750 as being very cheap for something that was used in the main ASM run (was also used as the splash to ASM #116). I'm thinking that people just saw the Spectacular Spider-Man part of it and discounted it by, say, a third from what it would have sold for as an ASM splash. Any other opinions out there on this one?

I thought the Kirby 2/3 Journey into Mystery splash went cheap ($3k). Had the auction been in November, I would have pushed it higher. I just got to get me a Kirby monster splash rantrant

Im still at :o with Tim Sale Long Halloween selling at 16K

Confirming what I had long feared but suspected that prices for the two main Tim Sale Batman books are getting the respect they've deserved for years. A few years back a wonderful 2 page spread went for over $5k, which caused nothing but trouble for fans of the books trying to buy more pieces from them. lol This is a gorgeous rock star stand alone piece from LH. I can understand the demand and the battle for it.

yeah me too I think the TPB angle deserves to be disregarded as I believe it was here when the image is this strong

I don't mind TPBs at all when they're:

A. Contemporary with the rest of the series

B. The original TPB cover

and in this case

C. Waaaaaay better than any other cover from the series

I'd compare this one to David Mandel's Watchmen TPB cover. Probably the best cover in the series and from the same time period.

I was selling a Neal Adams Batman piece, and lost a lot on this. I guess the market for Adams' modern work is not good. $800 for an Adams published (twice) Batman splash is a good deal in my book:

BATMAN ILLUSTRATED #3 PAGE 226 PIN-UP ($800)

NEAL ADAMS

2006

But not all was lost. I also sold a George Perez Infinite Crisis #7 cover that totally exceeded my expectations on the sale price, ay $6,769.

RAD7EEDA201479_114846.jpg

INFINITE CRISIS #7 COVER ($6,769)

GEORGE PEREZ

2006, Battle with DOZENS of Heroes & Villains!

Here is something I won. It's a George Tuska page with touch-ups attributed to John Romita Sr. from What If #5. I got this because it's my birthdate October 1977. I think it went for a bargain at $1,212 considering it went for $1,063 in Heritage in 2009. It didn't double like most other art and this is pretty good for a page with Cap, Bucky, and Watcher that is more than 3 decades old:

WHAT IF? #5 PAGE 1 TITLE SPLASH ($1,212)

wow I see that went for 50 grand. Its beautiful and I know prices are up, but jeez, seems strong.

The beauty of Sienkiewicz, IMO, is that he has so many truly amazing pieces that you could never say one is THE BEST, but I think this one is probably in the conversation. So you got the amazing creator doing a near-definitive piece (yeah the poster too, maybe GN images) of a character he is most well known for drawing and there you go, top of the heap material.

And this is an Elektra piece you can display anywhere and have it appreciated, which is something in and of itself! No hiss or beheadings to explain!

Here's my list of bargains ("had I know it would just go for this cheap, I would have probably gotten it") and not-so-bagains ("two guys must have entered into a bidding war"), all in my opinion of course.

BARGAINS

RAD7EC452014731_144715.jpg

ANIMAL MAN #36 COVER ($1,750)

BRIAN BOLLAND

1991

*not bad for a 23-year old Bolland cover!

RAD072F02014825_161319.jpg

ALL-NEW COLLECTORS' EDITION #54 WONDER WOMAN DOUBLE PAGE TITLE SPLASH ($1,600)

JOSE GARCIA-LOPEZ

1978

*Ok, not exactly a bargain, but it becomes one when compared to the Deodato WW piece below.

RAD2E73E2014617_124345.jpg

WATCHMEN #8 ORIGINAL BLUELINE COLOR COVER ($700)

JOHN HIGGINS

1986

*Sure colors aren't worth much, but this isn't a color guide with color codes where the printers will interpret the colors. It's the actual hand-colored by the colorist page that was scanned/photographed for publication. It's actually like buying a painting, and it's Watchmen, and it's John Higgins. Someone got a good deal here!

RADEC22D2014722_15124.jpg

JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #115 PAGE 8 ($4,077)

JACK KIRBY

1965, Kirby and Roz featured in top right panel!

*50-year old art, Kirby drew himself, Thor in 3 panels, 12 x 18 size, I'd say the owner can immediately flip it and make money! Meanwhile, an unfinished, unpublished Kirby pencils only page went for $3200 or almost the same as this page that features civilians and a gorilla. Go figure.

As in my previous post, I think my Batman Neal Adams page went for a steal. I also feel I got a decent bargain with the What If 5 splash. I also saw a 3-page Adams and another Adams page - both from the 1960's - go for less than $1,000. His Phantom Stranger cover also did not hit the reserve. Not sure why the stock on Adams in falling.

NOT-SO-BARGAINS

RADE9BF82014714_125936.jpg

SILVER SURFER JUDGMENT DAY PAGE 2 SPLASH ($8,437)

JOHN BUSCEMA

1988, Full page Silver Surfer Splash!

*Surfer is so small and lacking detail here, it looks like primarily a space cosmos drawing.

RADAAD75201487_173041.jpg

WONDER WOMAN #91 PAGE 4 SPLASH ($2,550)

MIKE DEODATO,JR.

1994, 2nd Issue in Deodato's run!

*Not a title splash, not a cover, not vintage, not the best anatomy. Did Original Sin increase Deodato's stock?

RAD1F12A2014825_141544.jpg

ELEKTRA #12 COVER ($2,200)

GREG HORN

2002

*these are only pencils, fairly recent work, and looks incomplete compared to the published cover. Somewhere else, an Action Comics #544 45th Anniversary (1980's) pencil cover by Gil Kane sold for less than this!

I'd also put the X-Men 500 Greg Land cover and the Tim Sale Long Halloween cover in the not-so-bargain categories. I am shocked at the prices those things sold for.

Again, everything I said is purely my opinion. I'd like to hear your thoughts and also opinions to the contrary if any.

Thanks for reading.
