In other news, Deadpool became only the third R-rated movie to ever cross the $300 million mark as it brought in an estimated $16.4 million this weekend bringing its overall cume to $311.1 million. After passing Man of Steel during the week to become the fourth highest grossing superhero origin feature of all-time, it is now only $7.3 million behind Iron Man for third place on the same chart.

Is this chart inflation adjusted? If not, a couple of those totals would be higher (significantly in the case of the first Batman flick). The first Superman movie would likely be on the list as well.

There doesn't look to be a way to sort adjusted totals on BOM by genre, but there is a top-200 list of all movies, adjusted for inflation. Superhero/comic book movies of note are as follows:

Overall Rank ----- Title ---- Adjusted Gross ---- Unadjusted Gross

29 -- The Avengers -- $668,866,600 -- $623,357,910

31 -- The Dark Knight -- $647,761,600 -- $534,858,444

38 -- Spider-Man -- $604,517,300 -- $403,706,375

52 -- Batman -- $547,705,200 -- $251,188,924

58 -- Spider-Man 2 -- $523,381,100 -- $373,585,825

66 -- The Dark Knight Rises -- $500,961,700 -- $448,139,099

68 -- Superman -- $499,015,700 -- $134,218,018

82 -- Men In Black -- $475,165,100 -- $250,690,539

90 -- Avengers: Age of Ultron -- $465,684,200 -- $459,005,868

106 -- Spider-Man 3 -- $425,554,300 -- $336,530,303

107 -- Iron Man 3 -- $424,632,700 -- $409,013,994

132 -- Iron Man -- $385,808,100 -- $318,412,101

Using the origin story genre, the original Spider-Man is still the king of that hill, though as you correctly pointed out, Batman '89 makes up a significant amount of ground on the 1st SM and Superman would be the 3rd-highest origin, by adjusted gross.. Deadpool is $20 million or so from cracking the all-time top-200 adjusted list, FWIW.

The reason why Box Office Mojo doesn't offer a worldwide box office (adjusted) is because movies throughout the decades didn't have an international release. It was so minor, it didn't matter to studios. Now, and for the past ten years, the International Box Office is where the massive is taking place. These figures are billions.

It makes it tough to truly compare movies throughout the decades because the revenue opportunity has substantially increased in modern times. But if we compared at least DC and Marvel worldwide totals, using 2016 inflated USD, here are the top 20.

there are some terrible movies on that list; IM #3 and SM #3 were embarrassingly bad. but it's all about asses in seats and the studios have got the winning formula for the most part .

I didn't enjoy SM3 though.

A relative bought SM3 for me years ago. I watched it one time.

The other two movies I have watched a few times. Though I do wish Green Goblin had been the test suit design.
