NYcc sales report

Is there really a need for Chevrolet to have cars on display that require a great deal of space? I go to the the Auto Show at the Javits every year to see cars. Perhaps, I might someday see comics there too?

Rick,

I was at this year's NYCC and (unfortunately) never found your booth. Reading about your experience had me thinking about some of the key locations that were occupied by non-comic related sellers. Geico Insurance? Come on! The last place I need to see my insurance carrier is at a comic con. And I'm a big fan of the NYCC- it's evolved into the largest Con in the country if not the world (been to San Diego - one of the "Grand Slam Cons" but NY is moving to a higher plane in terms of sheer size). The NY Times Business Section had an article about how they plan to extend the NYC Comic Con to multiple locations. I have mixed feelings about this. Can you imagine Wal Mart, Sears, Wells Fargo, etc. having a presence at these Cons? Scary.

I'm looking forward to Carbonaro's show in March 2015.

Best,

John

yes, the geico area was silly, but it was in the area where the non-comic stuff tended to be anyway. there was a pretty solid comic core area where reece, roberts, yee, superworld, metropolis, zapp and a bunch of other dealers were set up. i did see some comic booths off in the regions of plush toys and non-comic stuff more "downtown" (on the left side of the convention) and I would be pissed if I was one of them and paid the same as being in a good comic area. gator i am guessing was off further "uptown" from the comic area nearer to the northern wall (on your right when you enter) where there are a lot of toy sellers and what not. i could see not wanting to be there all things being equal. i didn't even make it over that far (of course, the most expensive book i bought was $15, down from $25 as part of a big purchase of cheapies).

Is this the article? %7B%221%22%3A%22RI%3A5%22%7D&_r=0'>NYT article If so, I don't see a discussion of expanding to multiple locations. hm

"110 events at 25 venues all over the city"

I read the article. The con will still be at Javits. The "110 events at 25 venues all over the city" will be like super week. Where they have different types of events associated with the con throughout the city.

Also, Carbonaro has a new 2 day winter con in December. It's at the new Resort and Casino in Jamaica, Queens.

That is nuts. Unless you live in Queens, and even if you live in Queens, that is a huge PITA to get to. Yes, Javitz is a schlep to the subway, but at least it is doable and you're within 20 minute walk of 3 million bars and restaurants for afterwards. They must be giving the space to Carbo proactically free. I wonder if more than 500 people show up?

"110 events at 25 venues all over the city"

I thought they did something similar to that this year, a whole week of stuff leading up to and surrounding the con at different locations around the city. Maybe I imagined reading that. In any event, the main con would still be in one place I'd imagine, too much of a nightmare to spread it around.

I don't think they plan on going beyond the Javits for the con itself. What they can do is increase the number of days for the con and add to the events outside. NYC is one of the few cities in the world where mass transit makes it relatively easy to get around. It's only a matter of time before the full resources of the NYC are used to promote and enhance the NYCC. There's no other city that can come close to competing with that and that's not a put down on the other great cons. I'm not happy about this since the comic book aspect of this show will further decline. What's a comic con without comic book dealers?

it did not appear that they increased the number of buses going all the way down to javitz along 34th. we waited a long time for one. that along with the crazy traffic on 34th on a friday (nothing the city can do about that though) it took 30 minutes to get crosstown from herald square.

i know, i'm being whiney. it's great that there is a subway that gets you within a 20-30 minute walk from there. less great if you are dragging 50 pounds of comics home.

I had the same reaction. I live in Queens, and not having a car I'm not even sure how I could get there. Maybe it will be a buyer's paradise, who knows, but more likely than not I just won't make it.

I think most folks going to this would drive (shrug)

most people who go to nycc didn't look like they were driving. most people who live in NYC don't have cars. i drove on sunday, but i parked up on 72nd street and took cabs back and forth. my wife dropped us off and picked us up on saturday. public transport and cabs on friday/thursday.

then again, i guess he isn't looking for the cosplay crowd who don't have cars!

true, that queens show doesn't look like it will be drawing people from too far away, so it isn't an issue of hotels and transportation and people flying in.

JL, if I go I'll drive and i'll pick you up en route, so long as you don't live somewhere too wacky.

I went all 4 days and don't recall seeing your booth. Meanwhile, I stopped by Worldwide, Harley Yee, Superworld, Bob's, etc. because they were all right in front of the entrance doors to the main room. After the first day, the crowds were so painful that it felt like it took half an hour to walk from the CGC booth in the main room to the restrooms in the back. There were booths that I remember seeing on the first day that I never walked by again because of the crowds.

I know the NYC crowd doesn't drive or have cars, but the bridge and tunnel folks do. I used to drive into NYCC, but they eliminated so many of the lots near Javits that even the big ones were filled early on Thursday. I got lucky finding one about 4 blocks away, I just made it in as they were close to filled. I took the bus in on Friday, but it's a real hike from any PT to the show. So my days of driving to NYCC are apparently over unless they build new facilities down there, which they likely will but it's taking years to build it up. I imagine someday it's going t be finished and the venue will benefit from restaurants, transportation and parking in the area. Wait a few years and it'll be done.

Maybe Carbonaro figures customers will take there winnings from the slots and head over to the show to buy comics?

If you live in Brooklyn, Queens, or Long Island, it's not a bad commute to get to this show.

Also, it looks like there are free shuttle buses to the casino that run all day long.

Was Adam's result the same?

I saw him walking the floor and asked where your booth was. I was surprised how far we walked from the main dealer area. I'm sure you are happy you had the Pre NYCC sale of the More Funs and Adventures.

I did not buy a single book at the show. While there are only a few books I am looking for, they either were not present at the show or were priced higher than I wanted to pay.

I did the same thing. Walked around for a few hours. Saw a few books I liked that were priced crazy. Left without spending a dime other then the pass to get into the con.

Rick, how much were you selling the Captain America #1 3.0 copy? Book looked pretty nice.
