@CGC Mike, I can't think of a better way of destroying a once-admired brand.  Certifying this "reader" as a CGC 4.5 is a farce.  If you examine the Grader Notes, this book is actually weaker than it appears in the posted front cover scan.  I don't think I've ever seen a more bogus grade.  :sumo:

Here are just three examples of a "correctly graded" ASM #5 in CGC 4.5:

And to add insult to injury, this reader should have been encapsulated with a Purple Label.  The Grader(s), the Encapsulation Room staff, and the QC Inspector all whiffed on this.  Three separate strikes on a single pitch.

I wonder if anyone is out there scratching their head after receiving their 4.5 book back in a 1.5 slab?

Cor, I was only .5 off!

@CGC Mike Seems to me the right course of action for CGC would be to reach out to the seller on eBay to try to remedy it, or buy the book so it's off the market, fix the label, and recoup some costs via auction or giveaway or something.  Whatever it takes to remove that embarrassment from the marketplace.

I did reach out to the team regarding this.

A sound theory by GM&I and great detective work to prove that theory by RMA.  (worship)  (worship)

To recap for the sake of @CGC Mike, CGC should now be looking to recall not one but two certified/encapsulated books: a 2.0 ASM #5 "reader" that's mistakenly sitting in a 4.5 holder, and an "apparent" 4.5 ASM #5 with amateur restoration (C-1) that's been mistakenly encapsulated with a Universal label (S/N 4267166003 and S/N 4267166004).  :ohnoez:

Yes.  All of the info has been sent to the team.  Thanks everyone for the great detective work.

Damn. When I eventually submit my beater ASM #1 to CGC, going to see if I can find a buddy to submit a midgrade copy in the same order. Hey… you never know.

Yes, I'm leaning toward a white piece of paper because, as you noted, what appears to be shadows in the shape of the object. If it is, despite it being a 9.6 (although, as I previously noted, I think it was a dead-bang 9.8 despite a tiny CB ST - CGC did not provide grading notes for the book; of course, as one knows, "comic book grading is subjective") I'll send it back for a "dreaded" mechanical error because the object simply looks ugly on the book.

Edit: Wrong scan initially added to post.

Correct Scan: The 9.8 does not have the aforementioned shadows.

I quickly reviewed the comic books yesterday, July 17, and the one with the white piece of paper on the back cover was, I assume, re-slabbed (if you would) as the object is not there. I'll more carefully review the comic books and slabs later.

I will note that FedEx delivered the box to the house next door. My family and I barely know these folks as they very recently purchased the home. The FedEx driver apparently signed for the box, leaving it on the front porch of the house, because I was informed upon collecting the box, the neighbors alerted me when I arrived home, that no one by the name that was signed resides there. FedEx in my area, except for one driver, is dreadful in the extreme. Clearly the driver that delivered the box did not care in the slightest about the box/delivery, etc.
