Best of 2014....... it Begins---------The Votes are in!!!

First, and as always, thanks to Bill and Brian for annually putting this “best of” together. I really enjoy seeing all of the great pieces that I somehow missed during the year. I say “somehow”, because it seems like I’m looking at CAF every day, and it’s hard to believe that I miss as much as I do. I especially enjoy the commissions. I don’t play in the sandbox, but this provides a great way to catch up. Second, thanks to my friends that have helped and provided advice and wisdom during this past amazing art year.

I’ve been trying to limit my buying to only “special” pieces. While I wasn’t totally successful, this year was a special year to be sure.

My top 5 are as follows:

Covers:

Weird Science #18 – Just a great EC Sci-Fi cover from Wally Wood. Link: http://cafurl.com?i=21736

Daredevil #30 – A classic pose from Gene Colan and a 2x up memory of an early meeting with the mighty Thor. Link: http://cafurl.com?i=21737

Splashes:

Thor #171, page 15 – Kirby/Everett in a combination that shows the best of both!! Link: http://cafurl.com?i=21738

Miller’s Dark Knight Returns – the end of the Mutant Leader. Link: http://cafurl.com?i=21739

Interior Page:

Amazing Spider-Man #12, page 20 Yep, a great example of a Ditko fight scene between Spidey and Doc Ock!! Link: http://cafurl.com?i=21740

As I said, it’s been an amazing year. Here is a link to the whole Lowry gallery: http://cafurl.com?i=11208

Anytime you struggle to find your “best 5”, and are forced to leave Ditko, Carmine Infantino, Wally Wood, Will Eisner and Neal Adams off the list, you know it’s been a crazy good year!

Not Making the Cut (ouch!):

Amazing Spider-Man #12, page 19 As they used to say in “Highlander”, there can only be one!! Link: http://cafurl.com?i=21579

From Carmine Infantino, the very first story from the very first issue of Mystery in Space. Link: http://cafurl.com?i=21741

The Spirit by the incomparable Wally Wood. Link: http://cafurl.com?i=21276

Will Eisner – a pin up from the Preventive Maintenence days. Link: http://cafurl.com?i=21420

Neal Adams – a retelling of the origin of Deadman. Link: http://cafurl.com?i=21742

Once again, thanks to Bill and Brian for putting this together. I can’t wait to see all of the entries!!

Ron, your selections are sublime, as is your collection. Very humbling, truly.

I took a look through all of the material I uploaded to CAF last year and realized there wasn't a single comic specific piece among them that was new to me in 2014. Not sure if that will change in 2015, but we will see.

I decided to go ahead and add a couple pieces to my Lowry created by guys who have done comics covers, but one was a personal illustration piece and the other a commission/personal piece. The Foster piece has been published in both of his art monographs, and the Hale is unpublished as of right now, but should see publication sometime in 2015 in his next book.

I really am not expecting either to garner any votes, but I decided to participate to give their work a little extra exposure to people who may not be aware of them.

Great stuff Ron...

I remember one or two years ago some people getting upset they did not get any votes on their stuff.

I see this so much more as a celebration of collecting art rather than a competition...hope others see it that way this year.

Lots to celebrate !

Added 21 pieces to the collection this year, which is an above-average year for me. In terms of overall quality, it was my best year since 2010 -- and arguably my best year ever, with some historically significant additions.

2014

Finally getting a chance to scroll through this thread...that was a good year!!

2014 was a terrific year for me in many respects. I remain grateful for all the wonderful people in my life and the great folks in this hobby. The older I get, the wiser I get, and the more that I realize how much I do not know; and I think that's the way it's supposed to work.

Thanks as always to Bill for his website that's become a cornerstone of our niche hobby, and to Brian for making this yearly show-and-tell happen.

My 2014 Lowry:

Under Splashes & Pin-ups.

George Perez – Tales of the New Teen Titans 2 splash page.

Last year I deserved ALL the votes in the splash and strip categories due to my Kirby double page spread (which, by definition, beats all splashes that are not Kirby dps), and my utterly EPIC Caniff Terry & the Pirates w/ Slits and Dragon Lady. Weirdly, I did not even come close to winning those categories. I put this down to some kind of fluke of the electoral college.

Sorry to say, I do not have the same level of ammo this year. I've entered three panel pages and a strip which I think are all artistically noteworthy. Two of my pages are Kirby's, and all my runners-up are Kirby panel pages too, cause I'm kind of a one-note collector. Check out my FF 31 page for some excellent mechanical tentacle action, and my Demon page for a sweet zombie line-up (pretty sure it's a Walking Dead prototype!). Mort Green is a nice marital humor strip by Gaar Williams, more known for single panel cartoons. His ink line is electric.

But really, if you've got a spare vote left after Ron Sonenthal's collection, I think you should throw it at my 7 Voyages of Lone Sloane page by Phillipe Druillet. First of all, I guarantee it is physically the largest page in the category, and second, nobody EVER posts pages from this demented French epic, and really, if YOU don't vote for it, doesn't that mean the terrorists have won?

I'm in! This is my first time participating in the Best of lowry voting. This year my focus was on more modern age pieces rather than Silver Age material. I managed to get a couple nice Mignola Hellboy pieces (I especially think the Hellboy with Horns from the 2004 10th Anniversary Sketchbook is a sweet piece), a Hearts of Darkness splash, and some nice Iron Man art. Unfortunately there a few other pickups that I've had to turn around and put up for sale, so I didn't include them in my lowry.

And I agree with others that we can just give the championship heavyweight title belt to Ron Sonenthal and then vote for each others stuff in the consolation round. I get weak in the knees just looking at his collection.

I went with just two entries this year. I focused on quality over quantity this year.

Ultimates #11 DPS by Bryan Hitch - full team (well, no Hulk)

Yeah, Ron's collection is a problem for others that want votes. :)

Yeah, nothing else is getting any votes. ..so I choose to see Ron's entries as a win for all of us. Because damn, those are some nice pages of art that he's shared. Though reviewing his entries, maybe we can just have a separate category for Ron's art this year, and then everything else can go in their regular categories, because that's the only way anything else has a chance.

NO, Ron is not getting all the votes. he only entered two pieces in some categories and you each get three votes per category! I know, some of his things deserve all three votes but I myself have resisted that type of voting so far.
