Found that I had one of these from some random dollar box pulls. FYI, the indicia specifically says first print. Now I've got something else to look for...

I would take Kirk's word for it.

As a fun side-line I've been collecting a few DCU's as I find them in collections I buy

I have these 10 so far -

Advs 508, 509, 535 x2, 536

Impulse 16

Superboy 6

Supergirl 3

Superman Ann 18

Catwoman 15

They seem very scarce in the UK

Q: Of the master list what are the top 10 rarest ones from your experience?

Of the titles I collect (see post above), I would say the ones I'm missing are pretty rare because I've been looking for 5 years on ebay and stores all over the country and haven't found them (I still say they are probably in the closet of someone's little brother because they came in those 20-packs from Toys R Us). The following are also very rare in the titles I collect (I've paid up to $100 in some cases to get copies):

Action 686, 718

Adv of Superman 499

Superman 77, 96

Superman Man of Steel 20

Detective 680, 682 (orange cover), 685, 691

Batman 517, 524

If you find any of these, buy them right away and don't sell them for cheap!

Just to add something as the basis for my statement of rarity. I know three other guys who have tried vigorously to find DCU Universe variants in these titles. The ones listed above and the ones I'm missing have been very hard for the other guys to find as well.

Just an update:

Still looking for Action 706, Adv of Superman 530 and now also Adv of Superman 531. I know the Adv of Superman 531 exists because I have a friend who has one. Offer of $100 for each issue still stands if in FN or better condition.

Finally found a JL 86 and MOS 42 and Superman 98; So now I'm only looking for Superman 95, 117, and Superman Man of Steel 49. Offer of $50 for each issue in FN or better still stands.

Come on guys... I'm sure these are laying around in your little brother's closet if you will just go looking for them. Recall they came out in packs that were sold in places like Toys R Us.

After about 19 months of very serious looking this is the remaining want list I have:

Animaniacs: #4, 18.

Aquaman: #5, 9, 24.

Azrael #22.

Batman #504, 515, 516, 517, 518, 524, 527, 531 dlx, Annual 20.

Batman Adventures #18, 33, 35, 36.

Batman & Robin Adventures #1, 4.

Flash #92, 109, 110, 114.

Green Lantern #56, 58, 61, 63, 66, 67, 68, 70.

Impulse #3, 10?.

Justice League America #93, 98.

Justice League Task Force #17, 19, 22, 23, 32.

Looney Tunes #8, 12, 14.

Nightwing #2.

Power of Shazam #1, 3, 4, 12, 17.

Robin #3, 4, 11, 15, 17, 20, 21, 22, 25, Annual 4, 5.

Showcase '94 #2, 3.

Steel #23, 28, 31.

Superboy #2, 9, 12, 14, 16, 23, 24, 32, Annual 3.

Superboy & Ravers #1.

Superman #77 (3rd), 86, 94, 95?, 96, 98, 100, 101, 103, 104, 105, 106, 109, 117, Ann 8.

Superman Doomsday: Hunter/Prey #1.

Superman MOS #38, 41, 42?, 49?, 59.

Where in the World is Carmen San Diego #1.

Wonder Woman #90, 92, 95, 97, 98, 101, 106.

Note that the Animaniacs #18 and Flash #92 are readily available on eBay; I just haven't bothered with the first one, and haven't wanted to pony up the money for the second.

I got lucky with stumbling across super low grade copies of Adventures of Superman #498-499 and Justice League #86, and I bought a MOS #20 DCU when I was buying up those later printings before I started specifically looking for DCUs. Others I've only seen a single copy of (which I now own): Batman Annual #13 (thanks to Revat), Looney Tunes #15, Flash #94 (and any above #104), MOS #48, Catwoman #36, Sovereign Seven #1, Detective Annual #8. Save for MOS Annual #3, which I have found 3-4 copies of, the Annuals seem difficult in general.

Anyway, from my perspective I would definitely agree with Kirk's list (who wouldn't?) and add these that have eluded me thus far as a "fairly difficult" tier.

Books I see pretty commonly in my hunts: Adv of Superman #508, Superboy #1, 4-5, Steel #1, Batman #509, Action #700. These don't quite grow on trees, but I see them pretty frequently.

How difficult to find are the "Premium" DCU editions for Action 700 and Detective 675?

I think action is harder than tec, but neither is too hard, though the action is worth a bit

Mysterio -- Great list... I enjoyed looking at it.

1. I would say you can also put a question mark on Superman 117. I don't know anyone who has that one.

2. If anyone ever finds Azrael 22, please let me know. I know a guy who would probably give rights to his first born to get his hands on that one. Not that anyone needs a new mouth to feed, but what the heck, there might be a pretty good trade to be had on that one.

Oh wow, eBay is lousy with them. Guess I should have looked before asking. I found them both over the weekend in a dollar box.

Yeah, there has been no shortage of Action #700 or the slightly less common but still abundant Tec. The non-premium Action is more difficult but still not in the realm of the tough, let alone scarce DCUs in my experience. If you're serious about dollar box diving you can often find a lot of these. I've got a full short box of dupes and undercopies from box diving. If I find a DCU it's very difficult to leave it behind, even if I have multiples of that issue already!

I usually leave the ones I already have behind for the next person to find, but I will pick them up if I know people are looking for them.

I'll leave the fairly common ones behind, like I've stopped buying Superboy #4-5 unless they're 9.8 candidates, but the others I'll get as sale/trade potential or just in case they're upgrades for my PC. Most are only $2-3 books, so this is not a money maker, but I'd rather save them from the indignity of the dollar box to put them into the hands of people who appreciate them. It's tied up a fair bit of capital though. I need to do another sales thread to move them out.

I think the benefit of grabbing them (even if they're common), is that you might be able to trade them with other collectors for ones you might need (since they're all more or less in the same value realm). There's not too much consensus on these, so some which might seem common to some people might be less common to others.

Although quite obviously, nobody need to be rolling ten deep for any of these issues in midgrade, barring Flash 92.

I've always been happy to trade 2-3 for one I need when I have traded. It seems the fair thing to do since I value the books I need higher than the ones I have been able to find multiples of. It's possible that availability may be regionally influenced to a degree, but I have no real data to back this up.

Roughing out a rarity scale would help with establishing value, even in a broad sense.

Well, one way we could measure rarity is by determining which issues each person has, and come up with some type of rarity based on that. For example, if we poll 10 people who collect Action Comics DCUs, and all 10 of them have #700, we can call that a common issue. However, if only one person has #702, we can call that rare.

but would you do a poll for each comic?

should everyone just submit a list of which ones they think are common and which they think are rare? is it all too subjective, and possibly disingenuous based on what any individual might hope to buy or sell (although I do believe most of us would be reasonably honest)? is there that much value in 'knowing' the 'relative' rarity? when its mostly anecdotal based on the experience of like 10 people (at most)?

note, I'm actually in favor of a list, just not sure of a good way to do it, and how much value it would have. I'm sure I (or someone else) would be tempted to use it as a marketing tool if I ever wanted to sell, which might seem disingenuous since I'd be a contributor to the list. but on the other hand, it might help some of us still looking for some rare ones (or possibly less rare ones) to actually find them.

thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

I was thinking that everyone would submit a list of DCU variants they currently have in their collection, and also indicate which DCUs they collect. I would want to know what titles each person collects so I know what should be the denominator in determining any type of ratio. For example, if 100 people submitted their lists and only three person had Flash 110, that would seem to indicate it is a rare comic. However, if those three people are the only ones that collect Flash DCUs, then maybe it isnt rare.

I think it could definitely be a marketing tool (I imagine most of us sell comics in addition to buying them), or more so a guideline for those who want/need to purchase DCUs in determining a fair price they should pay.
