Comprehensive List of DC Universe Logo UPC Variants
18 18

2,163 posts in this topic

I was thinking that everyone would submit a list of DCU variants they currently have in their collection, and also indicate which DCUs they collect. I would want to know what titles each person collects so I know what should be the denominator in determining any type of ratio. For example, if 100 people submitted their lists and only three person had Flash 110, that would seem to indicate it is a rare comic. However, if those three people are the only ones that collect Flash DCUs, then maybe it isnt rare.

I think it could definitely be a marketing tool (I imagine most of us sell comics in addition to buying them), or more so a guideline for those who want/need to purchase DCUs in determining a fair price they should pay.

i think list submission isn't too bad, but I'm not sure the sample size would be sufficient to weed out the obvious collection or possibly geographic bias, or if those biases even need to be accounted for.

Additionally, it may not account for issues that were extremely hard or easy to find, like if Cpt Kirk had to trade his left kidney in an underground casino in Manila for the glow in the dark batman issue.

That being said, 100 people answering moderately honestly would be pretty useful.

8 people? I'm less confident, but I guess you'd have to start somewhere....

I agree, a small sample size would not offer a lot of assurance and I would want people to comment if they had to go to great lengths to obtain a particular issue. I dont think we will get anything close to 100 respondents, but like you said, its a start. We can also include ebay data, too, to try to get to a more reliable conclusion on pricing and/or rarity.

I'm not sure 100 people actively collect these, or at least not that we can sample on this board. I'd be happy starting with 8 if that is what we had. Especially if all 8 are die-hard and know the market.

Some I own are definitely tough, and I know this because I sought them out specifically. Others I lucked into early but have never seen again, so I didn't know they were tough when I found them but I do now. So simply owning a book doesn't mean it is easy.

I posted my honest want list in an effort to contribute to the rarity project in at least an anecdotal way from a collection amassed in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado and a few from Illinois (and eBay). You may take it with a grain of salt, but it is one snapshot.

I could also speak with some weight of experience on the DC Bullet books, which are even scarcer than DCUs. I'm down to needing only two of them.

I have been off the computer for a few days (other activities).

I suggest instead of what we have we list titles we collect

and what we are missing. I collect ALL DCU issues and currently

am missing (along with which variant using my variant sorting):

Action 706B?

Adventure 499B, 524B, 530B?, 531B

Aquaman 4B?, 9B

BM: Shadow ot B 38B

Detective 680B, 682D, 685B, 690D, 691B, 694D

Flash 94C,

Impulse 10B?

Looney Tunes 7B?, 15B

Nightwing 1B

Power of Shazam 1B, 17B

Robin 25B

Steel 23B

Superboy 10B

Superman 95B?, 96B, 104C (DCU = Sticker), 117B?

Superman: Man o S 42B?, 49B?

Superman Man o T 5B

Wonder Woman 92B, 94B?, 95B, 106B.

The question marks are for ones that may not exist.

There are several issue numbers that have two different

variants with DCU in the UPC box:

Action 700 <$2.95 and "premium">

Batman 515 <$2.50, $1.50>

531 <$2.50, $1.95>

Detective 682

690

Green Lantern 51 < With/without "II" upper left>

81 <$3.95, $1.75>

Superman 104

Superman the Wedding Album 1

Note for you hard core collectors: the set of

SM\Doomsday: Hunter/Prey (3 vols.) have DCU versions

as well.

Enjoy.

Thats a good idea. Listing missing issues gives a good idea of rarity, too.

i don't think anyone else has been quite as serious about collecting these for as long as Cpt Kirk and Jerome have. For the rarest of the rare, pretty much anything THEY BOTH agree are rare (without anyone else dissenting and posting a picture of 5 copies in their basement), that should be a pretty good indicator of what's ultra rare.

Oh, ok. Jerome, for Detective 690, what are the different DCU versions?

And has anyone actually seen a Flash 94 DCU? I dont see it in mysterio's want list, so I am guessing he has one. It just seems odd to me that there is a second print and a DCU.

I posted a scan of my #94 somewhere in this thread. It should still be there.

I believe I have a copy of #94 as well.

On the topic of the survey I think it would be good, but, I have not ever separated out out all my DCU's like I should have from the get go. With the copies I have also in overflow boxes, I can't really be of use right at the moment until I do so. There are copies I know off the top of my head I do have, though.

I think Jerome's list of missing ones is a pretty good list of what's rare. He's been looking for them for a long time. I have too, and those are hard to find. I would add that Superman MOS 42 does exist (there's a stickered DCU and non-stickered DCU version of SM MOS 42 -- I have them both and both are pictured in this thread).

For TEC 690, I believe Jerome is referring to the fact that there's a stickered and non-stickered DCU. I have them both.

Oh, ok.

If everyone posts the ones that they are missing, that might encourage some trading. Also, if I know someone is looking for a particular issue, I will pick it up instead of leaving in the bin like usually do with ones that I already have.

I've already moved most of the ones that I have, but I think at the height of my collection I had about half of them. BUT I can make a list of the ones that I thought were 'common'.

I'm missing Adv of Superman 531 (one copy is known to exist). Also missing Adv of Superman 530, Action 706, Superman 95 & 117, and Superman MOS 49. The existence of those five DC Universe variants is questionable. I've been searching ebay and have looked in comic book shops and 2nd&Charles stores all over the country for years now. To help save me some time in looking, I'm offering a bounty of $100 for any one of those variants listed above. So I think we can say those variants are rare, if not non-existent.
