The author is more interested in the bucolic and naturalistic message in the struggles of this mixed (caucasian and native american) family circa 1840's (?) in the American West. Wonderfully nature illustration therein. The author, Derib, is better known for his longer running series about Yakiri, a native american youth and Little Thunder his horse, another series centered on animal life.

All-new Invaders # 1 - 10 - ct: 10 - Robinson does his best to write an interest storyline for these

characters but it's always difficult to carry their history into relevance. It's mildly successful, still a B- series

Hawkeye # 15 - 20 - Failed experiments in this stretch. Was such a great book early in the run

Loki: Agent of Asgard # 1 - 6 - Interesting but confused

Ms. Marvel # 1 - 8 - I completely understand now the attraction I kept on hearing about. A+

The Punisher # 1 - 10 - Well put together

She-Hulk # 1 - 8 - Another good series

Winter Soldier: The bitter march # 1 - 5 - Really Good

X-Force # 1 - 4 - I quit at issue # 4. Pure dreck and not worth anyone's time as Cable & X-Force was prior to this. The only series I simply couldn't slog through.

Iron Man Annual # 1 - Interstitial stories. What's the point? An annual should be enjoyable outside of the main storyline and here tangential happenings are thrown at us. Big failure.

New Warriors # 1 - 10 - The sort of series that needs not exist ... not bad but not great. It just is and need not be.

Fantastic Four # 1 - 10 - Still unsold on the whole idea 10 issues in. Not a good sign ...

Marzi - Count: 10 - Childhood memories of the title character in '80's Poland before the fall of the iron curtain. Very well put together but soooo text heavy. Took me forever to complete these 230 pages since it's autobiographical and the image in many ways only support the text and don't carry the story themselves.

 

Onward towards our noble deaths by Shigeru Mizuki - ct: 15 - Non-fiction account of life and death as a Japanese WW II soldier on a pacific island and the repercussion of surviving a suicide attack. Let's just say, these guys were sent back to die on another hopeless attack while the officers were asked to commit suicide.

 

Vietnamerica - A family's journey by GB Tran - ct: 12 - Interesting bio comic about Tran tracing his family history around his parents' departure from Vietnam in 197? (can't recall). A lot of characters and family relationship to recall so this one is better in one sitting. I'd recommend this book to anyone.

 

Seconds by Brian Lee O'Malley - count: 14 - Yawn. Knew not what to expect. Came out trying to finish it as fast as I could as the story didn't fully grab me. Too few highlights therein to be worth the length.

Wolverine and the X-Men vol. 2 # 1 - 4 - ct: 4 - Same drivel as the X-Force book was. Had to quit early. Such a waste compared to Vol. 1

Avengers Undercover # 1 - 10 - ct: 10. Series ended @ 10. Had not read Avengers Arena but knew some of the characters from Runaways. This held my interest throughout but ended scoring B+ at best

 

Buddy Longway: What a change in the writing of this series. From its roots as bucolic simple scenario albums to what ended as a family saga over more than a 30-year period of the albums coming out, Derib shows tremendous growth as a writer; the stories became much more introspective and the issues more personal. In the end, both main characters die when they almost had found renewed peace. Touching.

Batman: the Jiro Kuwata Batmanga vol. 1 - ct: 16 - This was a very fun read. I hope the public library gets the future volumes in its collection. Lucked out to see it on the shelves the first day it came to the library

 

Le dernier livre de la jungle: Mowgli's story told as an elder gentlemen returning to the jungle to die. A great hook, esp. for me as I love series about animals, not anthropomorphic animals but stories with realistic animals as protagonists.

Ms. Marvel # 1 - 8 - I completely understand now the attraction I kept on hearing about. A+

Iron Man Annual # 1 - Interstitial stories. What's the point? An annual should be enjoyable outside of the main storyline and here tangential happenings are thrown at us. Big failure.

Onward towards our noble deaths by Shigeru Mizuki - ct: 15 - Non-fiction account of life and death as a Japanese WW II soldier on a pacific island and the repercussion of surviving a suicide attack. Let's just say, these guys were sent back to die on another hopeless attack while the officers were asked to commit suicide.

 

Vietnamerica - A family's journey by GB Tran - ct: 12 - Interesting bio comic about Tran tracing his family history around his parents' departure from Vietnam in 197? (can't recall). A lot of characters and family relationship to recall so this one is better in one sitting. I'd recommend this book to anyone.

 

Seconds by Brian Lee O'Malley - count: 14 - Yawn. Knew not what to expect. Came out trying to finish it as fast as I could as the story didn't fully grab me. Too few highlights therein to be worth the length.

From its roots as bucolic simple scenario albums to what ended as a family saga over more than a 30-year period of the albums coming out, Derib shows tremendous growth as a writer; the stories became much more introspective and the issues more personal. In the end, both main characters die when they almost had found renewed peace. Touching.

Le dernier livre de la jungle: Mowgli's story told as an elder gentlemen returning to the jungle to die. A great hook, esp. for me as I love series about animals, not anthropomorphic animals but stories with realistic animals as protagonists.

This series really blew me away. This is definitely a show that could work on Netflix, but alas, Fox has rights to mutants. Unless Marvel could take out X-23 and not refer to them as mutants. Not sure who holds the rights to the other characters.
