1000 comics in 2015 book club

433 posts in this topic

So how were the first issues of Fairest?

As always with Willingham written (or even, as in this case, co-written) stuff - pretty dang good. He has a very good handle on these characters, and it shows.

Gorgeous art on the later arc with Rapunzel and the fox-demon lady, too.

4.5 out of 5 stars!

Just downloaded another 56 today. Gotta love Comixology sales!

Catching up on Fairest has been great, the story and art are my favorite of the year so far (close second is the Wicked and the Divine).

However, I am wondering when Fables 150 will finally come out... Anyone know? Is it really June?

Les Tuniques Bleues

T. 48 - Arabesque - count: 2

T. 49 - Mariage a Fort Bow - count: 2

T. 57 - Colorado story - count: 2

Buddy Longway - count: 10 - Here's the western series for this batch. The stories are minimalist in this series. The author is more interested in the bucolic and naturalistic message in the struggles of this mixed (caucasian and native american) family circa 1840's (?) in the American West. Wonderfully nature illustration therein. The author, Derib, is better known for his longer running series about Yakiri, a native american youth and Little Thunder his horse, another series centered on animal life.

Marzi - Count: 10 - Childhood memories of the title character in '80's Poland before the fall of the iron curtain. Very well put together but soooo text heavy. Took me forever to complete these 230 pages since it's autobiographical and the image in many ways only support the text and don't carry the story themselves.

Avengers: 4, 5

Tomb of Dracula: 6, 7

Update:

Marvel U. reading:

Thor: God of Thunder - # 16 - 25 - ct: 10 - A+++ Very sad to see this one end. Hoping I'll enjoy Thor the series that replaced this.

Avengers - # 24 - 35 & 34.1 - ct: 14 - Very good Hickman

New Avengers - # 13 - 23 - ct: 11 - Even better Hickman

All-new X-Factor - # 1 - 14 - ct: 14 - Average PAD; has a feeling of déjà-vu to it.

Avengers World # 1 - 13 - ct: 13 - Average Hickman

Black Widow # 1 - 10 - ct: 10 - If Notto wasn't drawing it, I am not sure I would like it as much.

Savage Wolverine # 14 - 22 - ct: 9 - Probably the best Wolverine series out there since it's done in anthology style with stories set in Wolverine's past in the pre-WW II era. Of course, this got cancelled.

All-new Invaders # 1 - 10 - ct: 10 - Robinson does his best to write an interest storyline for these

characters but it's always difficult to carry their history into relevance. It's mildly successful, still a B- series

Amazing X-Men # 11 - Let's move on already

Uncanny X-Men: 26 - Most powerful mutant, blah blah blah

Uncanny Avengers: 24 (the worst of the Avengers series)

Superior Spider-Man # 33 - Weirdly entertaining

Nova # 21 - Still so much fun.

Saga # 26 - drugs

Wild's End # 6 - Ending on a so-so note

Rachel Rising # 31 - feels like the series is stalled

Conan # 11 - still no sign of improvement

Prophet:

T.3. - Empire - # 32, 34-38 - ct: 6 - I don't typically like sci-fi but I am still strangely mesmerized by the creativity of the worlds in this book. The storyline is secondary to my enjoyment of this series.

The Wicked + the Divine:

T.1. - The Faust Act - # 1 - 5 - ct: 5 - Pure tripe. I am not the target audience and I won't return to this series.

Onward towards our noble deaths by Shigeru Mizuki - ct: 15 - Non-fiction account of life and death as a Japanese WW II soldier on a pacific island and the repercussion of surviving a suicide attack. Let's just say, these guys were sent back to die on another hopeless attack while the officers were asked to commit suicide.

Vietnamerica - A family's journey by GB Tran - ct: 12 - Interesting bio comic about Tran tracing his family history around his parents' departure from Vietnam in 197? (can't recall). A lot of characters and family relationship to recall so this one is better in one sitting. I'd recommend this book to anyone.

Nico: Illustrated by Berthet (see Pin-Up), this is a fun spy-thriller that doesn't take itself seriously in an alternate timeline in which the US and the USSR use the technology of the Roswell alien ships to make technological advancements possible in the 1950's.

T.1 - Atomium-Express - ct: 2

T.2 - Operation Caraïbes - ct: 2

Total: 683 + 142 = 825

I was just recently lamenting on how my library is running out of TPBs for me to read, and even had a wonderful boardie send me some stuff, but last time I went to the library to return some books, it is like they read my mind - 7 volumes (is that all of them?) of the Akira TPB telephone books, the last Alan Moore Swamp Thing trade, 7 Animal Man trades (that title has been on my list of 'want to read' for a while) and a few others. I hope more are there next time I go back - which will be a while, I have all 7 of the Animal Man trades, vol. 1 of Akira, Vertigo's Cinderella, and much more to read!

You're in for a treat with the Animal Man trades. Cindy's minis are also enjoyable.

I went to the library yesterday and scored as well. McCloud's The Sculptor OGN, Mechner's Templar OGN, Manhattan Projects TPB 5 and Outcast TPB 1. The two OGNs are huuuuge. Will take me a while to read through esp. since I have to read through O'Malley's Seconds first.
