Currently, what are the rarest Silver Age comics?

34 posts in this topic

Silver Age books are generally not "rare"....

And of course if something is relatively scarce it does not mean it is automatically in the "population" of the slabbed copies on the CGC census.

I don't think it unfair to say that the census reflects popularity rather than rarity.

Can someone quickly list the current census numbers for some of the highest priced Silver Age comics, e.g.:

Amazing Fantasy 15

Fantastic Four 1

Incredible Hulk 1

Amazing Spider-Man 1

X-Men 1

Tales of Suspense 39

Journey into Mystery 83

Showcase 4

Showcase 22

Brave and the Bold 28

Adventure Comics 247

???

Blue copies:

AF 15: 1,559

FF 1: 1,086

IH 1: 858

ASM 1: 1,979

X-Men 1: 2,267

TOS 39: 1,180

JIM 83: 968

Showcase 4: 241

Showcase 22: 559

B&B 28: 646

Adventure 247: 229

Wow, I would have thought Showcase #4 was lower than Adventure 247 based on how often I see these issues up for auction.

My personal opinion is that there will not be any correlation between scarcity and demand for silver age books. Likely some of the scarcest comics will have very little demand. Identifying some of these books may create demand for them, but on their own there probably isn't much. Think about some of the non Atlas/DC publishers or Even some of DC's funny animal or teen an romance books.

Too bad Michelle Nolan isn't an active member of the boards, she specifically collected all 1950's comics and could probably add some valuable commentary to this topic.

Really too bad. Has Michelle ever posted anywhere?

Didn't she post here for a while? But not lately, I think. (Or possibly not ever, if I'm mixed up about it. :D )

Several Atlas pre-implosion titles are tough to find. Ever seen a Sailor Sweeney 12,13 or 14? Rather than hen's teeth.

nice Severin cover, just a tad of cheesecake to go with the slapstick. The gooey stuff is between the covers though - basically a Syd Shores three issue showcase.
