There will  be markets that CM does not play as well in because of the female lead.  Remember that Wonder Woman under performed in several markets and was closer to a 50/50 domestic to foreign split, unlike the 40/60 split which is where many super hero movies have been running. I think if you put the same splits and similar market issues on CM it will negatively affect the foreign numbers.  This brings me back to my prediction of 350 to 375 mil domestic and the same foreign resulting in 700 to 750 mil total.

With the countries that banned Wonder Woman, that was about Gadot's Israeli heritage and statements in support of the Israeli military. That knocked off $6M to $6.5M off the final result when compared to other recent superhero movies. Venom and Homecoming played the widest in such areas, providing a sample of the market potential.

Captain Marvel won't have to deal with that scenario.

Won't do as good as WW.  Brie Larson just isn't as likable as GG...

I definitely agree on that, though many positive comments from the pre screening were not only about Captain Marvel but other characters in the film as well. Set aside all of the trolling that's surrounded Brie recently & I think it could have landed around 1 billion. Not sure where it stands now, but I'll admit that I'm almost as excited to see Dumbo which could likely effect the box office total as well.

I have a huge Marvel bias and even I have to acknowledge that Gal Godot (in addition to being exceptionally beautiful) has a certain "it" factor that is way beyond Brie Larson's ability to match.  And that's not intended as a knock on Brie Larson.  Gal Godot is something truly special.

If Captain Marvel outperforms Wonder Woman, I think it will be less about the leading lady and more about the story and plot elements.  If you're Marvel, the key to maximizing revenue is getting people to believe they absolutely must see this movie before they go see Endgame.

You nailed it with that last sentence.  Samuel L. Fury sends the text at the end of IW, and tada!  The Marvel audience MUST see more about this newbie.

Compare that with the lead in that Wonder Woman had - stealing the show in an otherwise lousy movie.

ROFL wrong and thanks for proving my point. People who work in the Gay Bondage Porne Industry that are actually Gay into Bondage and the Porno Industry should be hired based on their knowledge and qualifications of the the subject not if they are white, black , asian, female or male. If you were hiring someone that was black and female who had no qualifications over a gay white male solely on color and gender that is discrimination.

No one said she was hiring anyone that wasn't qualified. Her point was to INCLUDE. You are simply assuming. If you had any idea what you were talking about you'd know the UNION won't ALLOW her to hire someone unqualified. But hey, don't let facts get in the way of you showing us how enlightened you are about the world around you.

Of course the basketball analogy is the same thing as it points out how ridiculous it is for someone to want someone to be hired based on color or gender and not on qualifications and that is the entire point. What Brie basically said is I don't care what a white man thinks about anything.

1

Incorrect again. That's not what she said. Now you're just making things up.

Well, good for you then I guess this white guy won't be seeing your movie and that is on her but hey, she can be a bigot as much as she wants but doesn't mean I need to support her.

It is funny watching her try to backtrack her comments now because she knows she really stepped into it lol

She's not backtracking anything. She has to clarify it for those too dimwitted to understand it in the first place.

It's hard to hit me on the way out when I never walked in to begin with.

Why are you still here then?

But 6.5 million is a very small % of the overall WW numbers, and would have very little impact on the domestic to foreign ratio, maybe making it 48/52 as opposed to the nearly 50/50.

Plus, the countries that banned WW due to Gal Gadot are not exactly the most female empowering, so I would expect CM to perform poorly there also.  CM is going to face many of the same international headwinds that WW did.

Gal Gadot is awesome but she developed that awesomeness...in Fast & Furious she does not exude the charisma that she now displays. There is no reason Brie Larson cannot make that same transformation, especially if they give her material that assists in that transformation. However Gal Gadot looks damn fine in that costume and I do not get the same tingling from Brie in the Captain Marvel suit from what I have so far seen. But there is no reason to count her out before you see the movie. It looks very good to me.

You are looking at it from a different perspective. A lot of females are going to see this for other reasons.

Maybe this will get more people to see the movie? I think a lot of people thought Captain Marvel was just going to be this goody two shoes, now she is showing attitude.

Brie Larson making this controversal seems to now have created more interest in this than a few months ago.

She got people talking about Captain Marvel.

It’s funny to read how Gal is something special when in the Wonder Woman movie everyone was complaining about her being too thin

Also half of the people who are excited about Brie have never seen Room. I don’t think she didn’t anything special in that performance. Most bring up her role in Scott Pilgrim.

the selling point in the Wonder Woman was the character. An icon for many many years before the movie was made. People had been waiting for that movie.

Have people been waiting for a captain marvel movie to be made? Maybe the original captain marvel cosmic awareness one. Have people been waiting for a marvel/Disney female Lead movie? Yes.

Its Disney. They don’t make duds. They have a huge marketing machine that begins each morning on the 1 morning show and pepper in enough advertising across all their platforms ESPN that you need to see their movies.

They have developed a formula that ensures people go out to see their film.

the difference here is repeat viewings or non comic people coming out to see the film beyond their base or core audience

they hit a home run with Black Panther (additional people who don’t watch comic movies + multiple viewings)

i see them pulling in more women (that normally wouldn’t watch a super hero film) as their marketing has been tailored to bring them to the theatre. However I don’t see the multiple viewings taking place unless the action is so great or the tie in is so strong to Endgame that people have to go out and watch it again before Avengers 4 comes our 8 weeks later.

I think for many of us, we will just watch this one once and wait for End Game.

my prediction $775 worldwide. Book the sequels

This is what won Gal a ton of fans from F&F 5:

Ahhh - if that was all the countries that either underperformed or banned Wonder Woman.

China: Underperformed by $14M
