GOLDEN AGE cover poll thread --- FINAL ROUND:

Thanks for getting this put together. It was a challenge! The bottom 20 were pretty easy, but doing the top ten was a challenge. I was surprised at my ranking, but the way you have it set up makes it easy to say "ok, is this one better than the one below it?"; once I looked over my final ranking it all made great sense to me. I'm looking forward to seeing the results, and the conversation that ensues.

What a nice way to spend a lazy Saturday afternoon. But man, that was tough!

 

Once I had my first and last selection identified it was difficult ranking all those great covers in the middle ranked positions. Went back and forth on several of them.

 

Hey, when I hit "submit" I was re-directed to a CGC page. I take it that is what is supposed to happen and my vote was counted? If yes, no worries, just wanted to be sure.

 

yes, the redirect to the CGC page at the end means your data was submitted

 

Absolutely, Ben! It's a lot less confusing than the "poll closed" redirect.

 

Left to just one of us folks might've been redirected anywhere from a sporting goods website to porn! The CGC homepage seems like a good compromise.

For me the first and last books were the easiest to place; although I almost switched 1 and 2.

Our esteemed experts (and a few know-it-alls who have great collections -grin) had a lot of input in suggesting covers for the list. Our core group established guidelines that allowed for some titles that weren't among the first choices of the experts to provide balance and for the sake of variety. We insured this variety continued in the FINAL 40 with a few modest tweaks, but this poll is totally based on the individual votes of participants. We'll let the chips will fall where they may for the Top 20.

I'm such a genius that it took me about 10 minutes to figure out how to move books out of the default ranking.

Just got partway through the poll and a message said there was a problem with the site so it was reloaded. All my choices were lost and the page went back to the original format. I may give it one more try but will not attempt to vote if this happens again.

I'm very sorry this happened Ken. Have no idea how or why unless you experienced a power surge. One recommendation would be to copy your ranking choices to paper (abbreviate titles for brevity) before starting.

I'll pass your assessments along to our core team. We felt the drag function description was pretty intuitive, but perhaps a better explanation or tutorial was needed. It did take me a minute or so to figure out as I'd never used this format before.

 

I did have a genius IQ, but I'm sure that age and ale consumption have dropped those points significantly.

I'd certainly agree that many magnificent covers slipped under the radar or were omitted by judgment call. Those missed in this poll may be the subject of a future poll. Our focus for this poll was great cover art and variety. We wanted iconic art, but without overemphasis on well known covers that introduced characters. We also wanted a wide range of publishers and themes (not limited to costumed characters).

 

If we'd included every classic GA cover in the first round the numbers would've easily grown to several hundred books and the poll would be unwieldy. The sacrifices made by keeping the focus narrow will be borne out by the final results. Will the results please everybody? Probably not, Top 20 lists rarely do. However, we've strived to develop a fair poll that represents the genre without descending into the kind of subjective controversies that plague so many Top 20 polls.

 

Again, we appreciate everyone's input on this poll and how to improve future polls.
