Regardless of grade.....what are dealbreakers for you?

Somebodys name or a library stamp etc, nada

I actually love vintage store stamps, arrival date stamps, and even the handwritten name of the original owner if done neatly. :luhv:

The defects I avoid are:

1. Sun fading

2. Brittle pages

3. Trimming

4. Color touch

5. Bad musty odor

6. Severe moisture damage

I have stayed away from restored and so far, brittle pages. I would probably never buy a sun faded cover as it loses that "pop" that I love from cover art.

I actually have seen some date stamps that I really like, so open to those.

pretty similar

like vintage arrival date stamps

deal breakers

1. trimming

2. fading

3. pieces replaced

4. new CGC / CBCS label - both 100 steps backwards

don't mind colour touch at all, in fact i can't see how it's literally any different from a signed or sketched book - other than in intent (shrug) both are pen added to the cover... abd sometimes the ct book has much much less

Mis-wraps bug me but not as much as rusty staples or brittle pages.

Don't like detached covers/centerfolds but if it's a well presenting book (and one I've been hunting for a while) I'll take it.

I guess my only deal breakers are excessive rodent chew/smell. Oh, and sun faded.

Me.....

1. Brittle pages, even slightly

2. Rusted staples

3. Anything more than just a slight restoration, few color touches, cover cleaned, reinforced etc.

4. Writing on the cover, a small mark i can deal with. Somebodys name or a library stamp etc, nada

Seems a little hypocritical for the Island of Misfit Toys to get all high and mighty on misfit books... lol

Good thread. I buy for myself of course, but I can't help but have been affected by thoughts of 'what if I want to sell it?' And it hasn't changed much over the decades, the same few items appear most frequently on collectors' lists.

Opinions on how wrong I got this are welcome, but based on above, it seemed to me (some of it's editorialized):

Damage Level 1 (Most common fatal flaws)

Restoration (trim)

Brittle pages

Rusted staple

Sun bleached/faded

Chews

Foul odors

Incomplete

Damage 2

Restor. color touch

Tape

Writing (many dislike sigs as defacement)

Moisture damage

Moderate tanning/dust shadow

Chunks

Crooked wraps

Detached cover

?-discolored (brown, not rusted) staple, or is there no distinction to most?

Damage 3

Chips, marvel chipping

Mis-wrap -poorly centered

Stamps

Blown staple on cover

Detached ctrfold

Fanning/reader's roll

?Small light stains, including moisture stains or slight ripple

Damage 4 (flaws least mentioned, or not at all)

Lt. soiling, foxing

Creases

Tears

Blown staple inside

Nothing I own has one popped staple. Either they're both firmly attached, or the cover is totally detached.

Brittle, trimming, rusty staples, faded covers are all no-no's.

I don't mind dates, prices, or a name written or stamped on the cover, but I don't like moustaches, word balloons, shading, or any other defacement of the art.

1- Rust

2- Brittle Pages

3- Huge chunks of missing paper

4- Signed books

5- Major staining on front or back cover

6- Self repaired comics

7- Restored comics from the silver age and anything after that age

8- Writing on front cover

9- Grading companies other than CGC

10- Spine splits of more than 10mm (would only buy such a book if it was rare to find in in a specific grade or higher) I prefer the split to be at the bottom of the of the spine not in the middle or at the top
