not sure how to describe this cover, just cool

Nice copy!

Love Hollingsworth, he had that macabre weirdness in his style that was very compelling to the eye.

I can't look at that cover. It's the green guy's....thing. Yechh.

lol I see what you mean but I actually think it's supposed to be some kind of weird saddle. If you look behind him, you can see the edge of the back end of it. I'm thinking the colorist got this part wrong and thought it was part of the creature.

LOTS of pent-up demand for this one. It will be interesting to see where it lands.

Already a strong number with plenty of time to go.

I agree Andy, it seems like a no-brainer that Chamber of Chills 23 should've been a breakout book in all grades, long ago? :)

I never noticed this before, but now I'll never be able to unsee it! lol, thanks Jon!

Seriously heavy bids up front! I was hoping to upgrade my Beth copy with this one, but it's increasingly looking grim. It will also be interesting to see if this creates any spillover interest for the 3.0 copy that ends at Comiclink in 3 days. Heritage had a second copy, an off-brand slab at 7.5, but that is no longer on site. This might be CoC 23's year!

Lots of Golden age horror books have been seriously ramping up in value. Great if you have a copy for sale, but somewhat off-putting as a buyer because I do not have an explanation for the increase. Will it be sustained?

Consider this data from GPA on the Chamber of Chills 23:

( 9.0 ) File Copy - (1) $600 (1) $600 - $600 Apr-2016

$600 for a CGC 9.0 only 9 months ago to now "suddenly" have a CGC 8.5 at $1900 (+19%) = $2260 which is approaching 4X the value?

The CGC 7.0 that sold in Dec 2016 ( only a few weeks ago ) looks like a bargain:

( 7.0 ) (1) $250 (1) $250 (1) $250 (1) $250 $250 Dec-2016

The issue with those GPA results: Where were they sold? I actively search for this book. I haven't seen a 9.0 up for sale recently, and I would have gladly paid 3 times the price that the 9.0 sold for last year. The 7.0 price was also a joke. These prices are so low I almost have to assume they were private sales (and need based rather than trying to get the best price). I was posting monthly all last year in WTB for this book and had no takers.

It's confusing, but there are two different CoC #23s from Harvey. All the GPA data you cite is for the 1951 #23 which is not the classic one. The 1954 #23 is the 'Heartline' cover.

I tried all last year to find a decent low-to-midgrade copy, and was never able to. :taptaptap: At the time I actually found it a bit tougher than the #19. Just not enough copies to go around.

NOW it makes sense. The competing issue numbers didn't even occur to me. Personally, I'm happy to see this cover getting some love finally. I've loved this one for years, and have been lucky enough to have owned probably 8 copies in varying grades (and somehow lost one copy in 2015...) I'd like to upgrade, but also content with my 2 copies.

GPA also lists a 1954 #23 selling for $155 in 7.5 less than a year ago.

I have no idea what venue that sold through, but it makes no sense unless it was a BIN that lasted 10 seconds. That book has been hot for quite awhile. Can't imagine it selling for so little at open auction.

I found that out years ago when I bought a CoC 23 off an Internet site that had condition and grade but no pic. I received the '51 but wound up keeping it. Newb mistake! :blush:doh!

Already a strong number with plenty of time to go.

I would be careful paying big for any Harvey comic from the 1950s and later after the warehouse finds.

On the face of it that would make sense but the warehouse find of Harveys was a long time ago. Most of the issues aren't hard to find, but there's not enough of the classic covers around to meet the demand despite a probably ample supply. If I were to find a small stack of nice shape bcm 50, I would pick one to keep and get plenty strong prices for each one left. The demand would be there.

Find a nice stack of Witches Tales 25 and PM me first! :gossip:
