Received a package from @Dan82 today.  Inside was some serious goodness, along with some extras that he threw in.  An absolute pleasure to do business with and can't recommend him enough.  These will help in completing my X-Men UKPV run.  Dan, you are amazing, thank you so much!

Wow those nice copies I find it really difficult to get high grade pence copies for my pence run of fantastic Four so those are impressive finds definitely considering pence copies tend to be hard to find in any grade now

So I’m just discovering these, are the pence copies usually sold at a premium over the standard US copies?

It's starting to as collectors discover that these books were printed at the same time and on the same press as the US books (some believe the UK variants were actually first of the press run). They were however only a fraction of the print run, making high grade copies scarce.

Like all things it depends on the book, grade and/or if a key issue; whilst some collectors will always favour the US version, some UK variant pricing books are seeing significant price premiums (ie. Werewolf By Night 32). Other region price variants are seeing similar gains when available (ie. Canadian, Australia, etc).

I'm glad you found them but, .... Shhhh..... don't tell anyone so we can find more before they explode in price even more.

Truthfully, the whole "variant" market has gone crazy.  I saw that a 9.8 newstand copy of Xmen 129 just sold for $13,250 which is about $7000 MORE than the direct market version.

Newstand copies aren't nearly as rare as Pence copies.  The Newstand premium seems to be on super high grade copies like 9.6 - 9.8.  Since they got beat up more being in regular stores the thought is that finding super high grade copies is nearly impossible.

I'll tell you what is nearly impossible........ finding high grade Pence.

Absolutely agree. I've been scouring for high grade UK variants and been lucky enough to grade a 9.6 X-Men 129 and Werewolf By Night 32 9.2. Wonder what those are worth nowadays given the scarcity?

Talking of X-Men, I spotted this copy on eBay last week and made a reasonable offer which the owner unfortunately declined. Shame, as I'd like to have studied it more closely in hand. It seems to be a UK copy with the price missing from the cover. I can't say for certain that it hasn't been removed somehow, but the absence of the T&P indicia is a second clue that the omissions are genuine production errors.

It's a cool book, which I would have bought without a second thought back in my misprint collecting days, but I can't justify the asking price anymore and will just have to be satisfied that it appears to exist.

This is what the indicia should look like by the way:

If you compare rectangle logo box cent copies have marvel comicS group whereas UKPV have marvel comic group. The no price copy you have spotted would therefore appear to be intended as UKPV as the S is missing.

Good spot Gary. The 'S' is there on the UKPV when you zoom in on other copies, it's just partially obscured, presumably, by the UK price slug:

That happens on a few Spideys too if I recall correctly.

Another reason why it would have been nice to snag it - close up inspection 1796344632_Magnifyingglass.gif.461b5cf5bb005c3f2fdaa83dc945004d.gif

I purchased a comic lot from ebay the other month because it had these three Charlton beauties hiding in it:

2142448966_HighSchoolConfidentialDiary8(Vol.1)August1961(6d)CopyB.thumb.jpg.8a12f60727e0ec58531dfd96d339ccb4.jpg 1632882988_NurseBetsyCrane13(Vol.2)October1961(6d)CopyB.thumb.jpg.8a180e0e36ba3fc335144ca5de1b3e94.jpg 1791157195_Sweethearts63(Vol.2)December1961(9d)CopyB.thumb.jpg.bbfcd93306a5dac71d317a7d664be1bd.jpg

It was clear the seller wasn't an overly comicy person, but they arrived surprisingly well packaged.

This comic was also in the lot, in an old yellowing bag:

For a 40 year old comic, it's amazing how bright and clean it looks, given that it likely spent its life in that horrible old yellowing bag in a wardrobe somewhere. There's something very clean, fresh and appealing about those monthless final 20p UKPVs isn't there when they retain that blistering whiteness. This copy, along with quite a few others, replaced the image I previously had in the UKPV evidence files, which was a nice bonus. The whole package was a delight to be honest.

Comics - don't you just love them... :cloud9:

There’s a Wyatt Earp #29 pence copy with Miller pence stamp on eBay UK at moment if anyone interested. I know @Get Marwood & Ifound one eventually.

Look at this on eBay
Wyatt Earp #29 L. Miller Publications VG-

I'm sure it would've done much better if it didn't have the rusty staples. Fifth one I've seen now overall. The TGK #56 from the same seller, another Miller, should do better.

It still baffles me that 35 cent variants command a very significant mark-up over the more common 30 cent and everyone goes along with that fine, yet the majority of collectors still don't see the obvious correlation there that should make pence books worth even a higher percentage over their US counterparts than 35 cent over 30 cent .
