Nostalgic era top 3
1 1

39 posts in this topic

So after listening to the recent Felix podcast with the founder of Heritage - I got to thinking about some of my favorite comic covers from my peak nostalgia priod. Covers that I was excited about as a kid.  We all have a different nostalgia period, so we all have different favorites.

Often when we think of that influencial nostalgia period we think about comics that came out at that time - but this doesnt have to be the case.  For Jim Halperin -  he loved EC comics that came out earlier than his nostalgia period.  Sometimes these first comics you lived were handy me downs or yard sale purchases or other such finds.

For me that period wad 1985-1991.

While I loved every comic I bought - my most memorable 3 covers are as follows.

The chances that I will ever own these is microscopic - but that's not the point of this thread.

So tell us the period and then show 3 of the most memorable covers from your nostalgia period. Obviously it is hard to narrow down - but there are no wrong choices.

The new boards make posting images easy - so post the pictures to make this more fun! Or if you want to make us dig, a list will do.

My most nostalgic period is when I first started reading & collecting comics in 1983 and 1984.  I could actually see myself eventually only collecting material from those two years (if I can manage to first pick up a couple/few pieces that I really want that fall outside of that timeframe!)

My three most nostalgic covers are probably all from Uncanny X-Men (#172, 173 and 176), since that series was my #1 focus at the time.  But, to keep it interesting, I'll just pick the most nostalgic out of those three and then the next two non-X-Men issues that would be on my list.  But, there are so, so many books from those two years that are right up there with these:

My nostalgic era is from 1980-1987, right after I moved to California. I had been reading comics prior but I didn't really get into buying them until I got here, had to get rid of pretty much all the comics before the move.

My top 3 nostalgic covers come from 1980 and 1982

New Teen Titans #1 (1980) - by George Perez and Giordano

Marvel Graphic Novel #1 - Death of Captain Marvel (1982) by Jim Starlin

Marvel Graphic Novel #5 - X-Men: God Love Man Kills (1982) by Brent Anderson

I'm so nostalgia driven, probably more than I care to admit, so this is a great thread for me!

My period was about 1977-1979 and 1982-1986.  There are so many books in there: most anything from the Pacific Comics run, Byrne's Alpha Flight, Miller's DD, etc, etc... so many! But three from the first five or six comics I ever read that are still magic for me to look at:

First cover that comes to mind based purely on nostalgia would be this ASM annual.  And its even on CAF.  Followed by The Brute and Richie.

Loved Richie Rich as a kid!  I had a stack of them, along with my Cracked magazines from the late 70s that disappeared somewhere along the way.  The funny thing is that both of those runs are so much more difficult to replace in terms of just wanting to flip through or re-read; any of that Marvel or DC stuff is easy to find in digital form, and even Kirby's later, lesser  stuff alone will be reprinted until the end of time in some form, but finding that run of Cracked Magazines or a run of Richie Rich Dollars and Cents or Richie Rich Diamonds in a cheap digital format?  Impossible.  The ironic thing is there have been a ton of Severin Cracked covers on Heritage recently!

My peak nostalgia period is probably 1984-1988. I can't pick a top three. Everything that comes to mind right away are fairly obvious, anyway. So to mix it up a bit, I'll go off the beaten path. And like Jim H., I'll include two that came before my peak period, but which I discovered during that time via reprints.

I have different waves of nostalgia for all kinds of eras as I left and rediscovered comics over the decades, and they scatter pretty widely. So I'm just going to pick on pure nostalgic memory from a very specific time, when I first got into comics.

173-3.jpg

This book meant everything to me. I was just about to turn 10. Published Sept 1983.

6-1.jpg

This one was a close second. I read both relentlessly.
I remember trying to trace parts of this one using my window as a lightbox. And then trying to re-draw the cover freehand. Published Dec 1982.

44-1.jpg

As a kid, the pathos of Rom really connected with me.  What can I say?
And in fact, I don't think I entirely understood Wolverene's feelings at the time, but I understood the overall sentiment, and it's a very sad book as well. Even today. Not sure what that says about me as a kid, or now, but it was a really deep connection. Published July 1983.

Nostalgic period of collecting comic-books for me would be around 1963 - 1969.

First American books I encountered (I'm from the UK) would be the Harvey kiddie books, with Stumbo the Giant being my favourite character.

Marvel came to my notice shortly afterwards and I was always big on Steve Ditko, with his cover to ASM # 18 being a personal favourite.

John Severin (sorely underrated) scored a big hit with me for his cover to Strange Tales 137.

Great thread :headbang:

The period I look back on the most fondly is the 1978-1980 period when I really got into comics in a big way as a kid. I'd been collecting the UK reprints of Spidey for a few years and at the time, that was all I knew. Here's my Spidey Comics Weekly #1 that I used to have, alongside my brothers Mighty World of Marvel (1973, but we got them in 1978):

20141220_170232.thumb.jpg.a9b9c33e202d66cb43249df8f22dd194.jpg

The UK reprints were so good, and I especially liked the 'sideways' issues of Spidey:

598c2e8daab91_ss192.thumb.jpg.81a8825d50867b89eb368448e92332cd.jpg

I must have read them a hundred times each. We had a local shop that sold old comics for between 1p and 5p each and the owner would just scribble a huge '3p' on the covers with a marker pen. That didn't bother me at the time.

Then, one day in 1979 I went in to the shop and a new guy had set up a section in there (he later went into partnership with the owner and ultimately took it over completely). He had displayed on the wall the US original printings of ASM 176 to 180. I was transfixed.

To this day, these are my favourite Spidey covers for reasons of pure nostalgia (that and being a confirmed Ross Andru appreciator). If we're limiting ourselves to only 3, here are mine:

I still own 176-180 as a NM set. I couldn't bear to part with them during the big sell off.  So for me, 1979 to 1980 will always be my favourite period. That being the case, you can imagine how happy I was to pick this up many years later:

I'd pretty much stopped buying (then) current comic-books during the latter-half of the 1970s, but as a huge fan of THE OUTER LIMITS (1960s), with 'Demon With a Glass Hand' as my all-time favourite episode, the Marshall Rogers graphic novel adaptation was a must-have buy for me.

Far as I know, Harlan Ellison owns the original cover art (even though he's gone on record as saying he didn't like the art job Rogers turned-in) but I was lucky to score the prelim cover art a few years ago (which you already know, Felix).

I think the first x-men comic I got was 176.  So I am right there with you.

At the same time seeing the thor - my favorite thor issue is 356 with hercules. Dave M has the cover on CAF. (Sighh.)

First off - thats a great andru page!

2nd - wondring about the uk reprints.  I see art show up from time to time.  Were the covers re-drawn images? New stuff?  What about the sideways covers - inside were the pages the other way or also sideways? Never seen the inside of these.

My main nostalgia period is from 1991-1993.  However, I can boil that down even more specifically to Nov/Dec 1991. I could probably list a dozen Marvel covers from that 2 month period that hit all the nostalgia buttons in just the right way.  Here are the three that mean the most to me.  It would be a dream come true to own any one of these three.  If I owned all three of them, I think I could easily retire from the hobby and feel like my mission was accomplished.  Not coincidentally, these are likely the first three comics I ever bought new off the shelf.

Cheers - I have 3 Andru Spidey pages in all. Love that blokes art.

The UK reprints alternated between using the US cover art - though sometimes amended - and brand new art. Examples here for the ASM 178 & 179 reprints to illustrate the point:

In the landscape issues you had two pages of the US originals reprinted side by side per page - I can't find a single example on the web or eBay at present. People are so lazy with their eBay photos!

I don't know much about who drew the 'new' covers. I did own one piece a few years back but never discovered who it was by, whether it was used and, if so, in what title:

I thought Spidey's face looked Romitaish, but the hands are terrible!

There's probably some cool websites out there with all the info on them. I'll have to take a peak one day and see whats out there :headbang:

I am going with three from my first few trips to the Walden Books or grocery newsstand. I'm not sure these are my favorite aesthetically from that period or even that year, but they take me right back to that first month or so--

DC "Double Bullet" comics are my nostalgic sweet spot. My first exposure to them were at campouts in my friend Shane's backyard. The ones that I read were already "old" and belonged to his brother. Here's my 3.

Joe Kubert covers WERE my childhood. Tarzan, Sgt Rock, horror, heroes-the man was an ace at any subject.

Then, there's Nick Cardy. No one did more DC horror covers than Cardy except maybe Luis Dominguez. Ghosts 31 is a cover that I've owned before. In fact, this is my 4th and final time with it.

I don't know whether this was published, but I think the artist may be Jerry Paris, who drew various covers and pin-ups in the early 80s.  There was one strange issue of a comic named Forces In Combat where Paris seemed to have redrawn most of the artwork, for some reason including this page of the Golem, originally by Tony DeZuniga in Strange Tales #177.

Mid 80’s is when I gravitated toward comics heavily. There are the usual suspects that everybody most likely has in common.   Perez Crisis on Infinite Earths # 7, Zeck  Secret Wars 8….  But there were others that left an impression that I have not forgotten.  Some came before my time; nevertheless   discovering the sword-and-sorcery comics from the seventies is also a nostalgic period for me, as I could not get enough of such movies like Beastmaster, Excalibur, Clash of the Titans, Krull, etc, etc.
