Something a bit older and before most of the boardies here now collecting days.

 

 

The first copies of books like Action 1 or Tec 27 I ever saw in person were held up just like that to me. Such freedom back then to show off your comics without layers of plastic tomb and vaults to secure them.

That's Grimes' book.  If that's a pre-cleaning picture, it's the only one I've seen.  Bedrock, are you saying Darrel sold it?

This is a classic picture of my good friend, Leonard Brown, and I have the original framed on my wall.   Not only is it a great picture, but the story behind the picture is even better.    After the two of us had enjoyed a mail-order business out of our parent's homes for several years, he wanted to open a store.  I was finishing college and wanted to go to grad school, so I wished him good luck.  He met Malcolm Willits and they started Collectors Bookstore in 1964.  Leonard wanted to get some national publicity for the store so he loaded up a trunk with a great selection of old comics, made arrangements with a local auction service for him to have the winning bid, and called the press and told them to be there for a great story.  The L. A. Times was there and the picture was picked up nationally, giving them more publicity than they dreamed was possible.   I was always amazed that no one questioned why the L. A. Times was present at an auction they never attended before or after Leonard's phone call, but that's life.

That Naked City episode "Hold for Gloria Christmas" with the original AF 15 and JIM 83 in the episode in several scenes is probably one of if not the gold standard for old comic photos/film shots. Just perfect timing to film an iconic milestone in comics history.

I like to tell people who want to open a comic store that they really need to work in retail before they risk their own money. I worked for a lot of people who taught me what not to do when running a business. Bruce Hamilton was at the top of that list.

The Joker would probably kill them! 

There are some not so nice stories from early fandom.  But a lot of good stuff happened, too.  At least from my vantage point.

I have the DVD and the books have so much gloss great cheap DVD to buy. Few more old pic's
