Did you ever watch Solaris? The russian version?

I read the book & have suggested Tarkovsky's film to my gf.

The book is extraordinary. I haven't seen the film.

I only watch Superhero movies on my phone.

I remember George Clooney saying Tarkovsky's original Solaris wasn't that great which is why Steven Soderberg needed to make a modern version.

Lastly, here's those Reel Rejects guys and somebody from Cosmic Wonder giving their extended thoughts of Shang Chi including what they didn't like. In comparison, the Reel Rejects guys were disappointed in Black Widow.

Wow, does this sound familiar, 3rd act issues....  A great story, with heart, meaningful action scenes and character building.  Then they go to an airport and fight some dude with a silly mustache for 45 minutes.

Prediction: I'm not saying Shang-Chi is going to singlehandedly save the movie theater industry, but with so many people now doubting the viability of movie theaters in the wake of Black Widow, Disney+/HBO Max day and date streaming etc, etc., I predict Shang-Chi will renew widespread faith in the viability of movie theaters as the primary place for audiences to watch cinema.

If filmmakers making these larger more cinematic films (and small daring independent films, too) are going to be forced to premiere their work on TV, the desire and passion to produce such work will diminish. Movies need movie theaters.

You posted Grace Randolph, she is predicting 40 to 50 million opening weekend, but hoping it has legs. Granted she said the film is great, but it is not going to win out against Covid.  Sounds like we could be set up for a good movie that does not generate the Box Office it should. That may renew hope in the MCU, but not hope in movie theaters.  I fear it could just prove the reverse.  If we have a great film that really should challenge the 1 billion mark, but ends up far below that, that is not black eye to the MCU or this film, but proof of just how weak and damaged the theater model is.

One of the unfortunate (to me anyway) human tendencies that the Pandemic has exposed, is that many people will take easy and cheap, and are willing to forgo experiences for the ease of just staying home. I hope that our willingness to experience life and get out there recovers.

I'm going to say 30-40MM tops on this one.

We've actually already seen the whole "magical karate" thing on Iron fist and, to a somewhat lesser extent, on daredevil on Netflix.

I say Shang Chi gets an opening weekend closer to Black Widow’s, say $65-70 million, boosted by good reviews, a pumped up MCU fan base, and the Asian-American community. Strong word of mouth and it’s theater exclusive run gives the movie the legs to make it the highest grossing movie yet of the pandemic when it’s 45 day theater window is over.

Pandemic be darned. Here’s a fix. Get the vaccine or else get inoculated the natural and also more painful and really really expensive way if you survive the experience.

this is inevitable as I think the majority of movie audiences is younger. i only blame the studios for putting out mediocre films that sell tickets but don't expand the soul

Film is indeed moving pictures. They should be cinematic.

If you (the entire thread, not Tup) believe that these Superheroe movies are that, then you aren't aware of what great movies are waiting to be seen.

Free your mind. Someone posted they had seen Infinity War 100 times. Why not watch it 50, and watch 50 of AFIs greatest films of all time?

@paperheartis a film lover. I know he gets this post.

I would argue that it has nothing to do with the quality of the movies. It is due to kids being raised with phones, tablets and smart TVs that enable them to consume content 24/7 wherever they are. The tech innates will grow up consuming movies on a different medium than the vast majority of us here on the boards, and that is what they will use going forward no matter how highly rated a movie is.

Yes, when these kids grow up to adults, their version of going out for dinner and a movie will be munching grocery store sushi on a park bench while they watch a Netflix original flick on an iPad 35.0. Sounds like fun!

Trying to get into China

Quote

When Dianne Chadwick created the logo for the mysterious Ten Rings organization as the lead graphic designer for “Iron Man,” the first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she never imagined that the studio would feature it center stage 14 years later. She also never figured the logo would be at the center of controversy.

Now, after earlier complaints that the original art was disrespectful to the Mongolian language, there’s a change in design that eagle-eyed fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe may notice: In “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” which bows Sept. 3, the logo for the Ten Rings organization now features Chinese, not Mongolian, lettering.

In “Shang-Chi” a new black and white version of the logo swaps out the Mongolian for 10 inoffensive Chinese characters written in ancient seal -script, all synonyms for strength or power.

The variation likely helps to further differentiate between the current film’s version of the Mandarin title character and prior controversial depictions of the Ten Rings head honcho — and smooths its path into the Marvelmad China market, where viewers and censors are on high alert for any hints of Fu Manchu- and Fin Fang Foom-Esque racism.

All of these early reports sound great. We'll see if that translates to big boxoffice. Everything is so up in the air right now.

If I lived near you, I would treat you to it .... that's how good I expect it to be, But you have to keep in mind that I am NOT the typical Fanboy who can find fault with a free BJ ... GOD BLESS...
