here are some Hulk issues in an OO run

unfortunately this part of the run is in rather rough shape

 

these were well read, my friend had two brothers and after a few decades only he remained a collector and their books eventually ended up in his collection but one brother enjoyed writing and drawing on his covers

note the stamps on 211 212 213, the first two stamped on the same day and 213 10 days later

Any idea why a date stamp on a cover would predate the publication date? Shenanigans, an error by the shopkeep, or something else?

Books tended to be printed and distributed around three months prior to their cover dates back in the day so this one is spot on.

You're welcome Alexander. Here's a good site to check the 'on sale' dates for comics - it lists comics for most of the main publishers by cover date but also separately by 'on sale' date using industry data and physical examples. It can be very helpful when researching things:

Click on the little magnifying symbol for the source of the DD #1's on sale date and you'll see it's only a few days away from the date stamped on the graded copy above:

Far more sensible to put the date stamp on the back cover don't you think?  Why on earth didn't Thorpe and Porter do the same for UK ink price stamps. There was often more white space on the rear than on the front of often busy/colourful covers which entailed price stamps not being consistently placed and ending up in random areas.

I don't mind industry date stamps on front covers - as well as being jolly helpful in certain areas of research, I think they add to the history and mystique of collecting. A well placed stamp is a thing of beauty.

A lot of the Milano Intercontinental stamped books have stamps on the back cover too - I've built up quite a collection of Charlton examples - here's a nice one:

I've not seen it before but yes, it's a UK stamp - Greenwich and Blackheath were some of my old stamping grounds - used to see Squeeze there quite a bit back in the day. This was taken there:

I’ll see what others I have pictures of but I absolutely love date stamps.  I’d rather have a beat up copy with a date stamp that shows the comic was bought out in the wild than a 9.8 that was hermetically sealed when it came off the press.
